“He’s a quick, athletic finisher, with a lot of versatility” Hurley said from his URI office. “Truth is I can’t wait for him to get here.”
Neither can we!

Nice season-preview type article on Hassan from his local paper, not a lot of new information but a good, fun read. I cannot wait to watch this kid!

Great article. Sounds like he really carea about the game. It also sounds like some of us here have said, that he is still growing, having grown 3 inches in the past year or so. I'm really looking forward to following his senior year of high school and can't wait to see him play at URI.ace wrote:Nice season-preview type article on Hassan from his local paper, not a lot of new information but a good, fun read. He has half of his team's points so far.Billyboy78 wrote:Hassan's first game is tonight. EC's is still a couple of weeks away.
Curtis won 49-43. Martin finished with 21 points, 17(!) rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Re: '13 NY SG/SF Hassan Martin (URI - Signed LOI)
Nice! I'm curious to see where he is scoring his points. We know he can get to the rim and finish strong. The key to him becoming a good SF in college is developing that outside shot. That's what I'm looking at in his box scores. In his 1st game, he did have one 3 pointer(didn't say how many attempts) and was 4-7 from the line. I wish I could find a shot chart on him. It's not even about the 3 point shot. I'd love to see him develop a jumper in the 15 foot range.ace wrote:

Looks like he actually had 23, and Curtis won by 34, but I'm not complaining. While it would be nice, as a URI recruit, for Hassan to develop that outside shot, if he's getting easy baskets rebounding and putting it back, that's where he's helping his team.

Hassan Martin scored 23, here are 2 of them:
I love the coach's emphasis on defense (game summary article).

Curtis rides Martin to 60-46 PSAL victory over Susan Wagner

Curtis rode the interior play of center Hassan Martin (21 points) to a 60-46 PSAL victory over visiting Susan Wagner on Friday in St. George.
The 7-0 Warriors, who also received offensive contributions Jamel Olorunoje (11 points) and Jermaine Anthony-Huff (10 points), successfully pounded the ball inside to the University of Rhode Island-bound Martin.
"Wagner's a tough match-up - they play hard and physical,'' said Curtis coach Rich Buckheit. "We looked to get the ball to Hassan on the block when the game mattered and he responded with some key baskets.''
The Warriors led after the first (18-10), second (32-22) and third quarters (43-30) before Martin's seven fourth-quarter markers helped the hosts ice the victory.
Buckheit, meanwhile, was also pleased with the play of his bench, namely Abisola Oderinde.
"We got some nice play from our (reserves) tonight, including Oderinde, who did a solid job defensively,'' said Buckheit of his senior. "He sets tough screens and just did everything we asked of him.''
James Bertucci (13 points) and Khepre Waithe (12 points) led Wagner's balanced attack.

Would be tough... although I am working on a plan that has Biruta throwing on Malesevic's jersey and slipping into the game. Americans can be kind of stupid sometimes, it could work.

Did anyone actually spot him?
Milan, Blue Ram and I didn't see him.
At least we think we didn't.

Yep, I spotted him at halftime when I was shopping in the Ram Zone. He browsed but didnt buy anything. I wanted to go up to him and tell him how pumped I was for him and the future, but I thought better of it.

Walked passed him at the end of first half. Pumped to see that a player supposed to be a front court guy for us was actually taller than me for once.

Just read a tweet that said Hassan's game has been postponed until Saturday so that he could attend the services of his guardian, who was killed in a car accident. My condolences go out to Hassan.

Hope Hassan plays better for a Hurley than against one
Curtis loses big to St. Anthony, 61-31. Martin with only 3 points.
72nd straight win for St. Anthony. Amazing!

Wow, I wonder if Bob Sr. had anything to say to him after this one.
I'm sure Dan will be giving him a call about it as well.
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em....right?

Bob Sr. is known for shutting down the other team's big players over the years, like Kobe Bryant, among others.

Yep, he was definitely the target... consistently double teamed, hard for his teammates to get him involved and not enough other options on the team to make them pay for it.rodfromcranston wrote:Bob Sr. is known for shutting down the other team's big players over the years, like Kobe Bryant, among others.

Re: '13 NY SG/SF Hassan Martin (URI - Signed LOI)
Hassan certainly didn't dwell on his tough game- came back for 26 with 16 boards and 5 blocks the next day.
I like this, contact doesn't bother him...
Martin, for one, didn't let the St. Anthony's loss bother him. The University of Rhode Island-bound senior also took three chargers against the Judges. "Failure leads to success and he was motivated to bounce back,'' said Buckheit. "And he (Martin) had a challenge too. Cardozo has a 6-foot-7, 260-pound center who is very physical, but he was able to exploit him on the perimeter.''

"To their credit, the Lions’ rugged man-to-man defense did a solid job containing University of Rhode Island-bound Hassan Martin, who finished with just five points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-7 senior sat for a good portion of the second quarter with two fouls."

Re: '13 NY SG/SF Hassan Martin (URI - Signed LOI)
Close loss against a city powerhouse for Hassan's team...sounds like he played great, 19 pts.
Curtis drops boys' basketball decision at Bishop Loughlin
Staten Island Advance, January 11, 2013 11:32 p.m.
In an ending similar to Curtis' first loss of the season, Innocent Kukulu's bid for a tying 3-pointer was off the mark Friday night and host Bishop Loughlin held on for a 58-54 non-league decision over the Warriors in Brooklyn.
Curtis (15-3 overall) got off to a slow start, trailing by six after the first quarter and by eight at the intermission. But Hassan Martin scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter as the Warriors briefly pulled ahead in the period.
In the fourth, the Warriors had the lead a few times in the seesaw battle, the last being a 54-52 advantage with three minutes to go after a Martin basket.
"We try to play a lot of our non-league games on the road to make it more difficult for our team," said Curtis coach Rick Buckheit, whose only setbacks this season were to two other high-profile programs -- 49-46 to Brooklyn's Xaverian at Wadleigh HS in Manhattan on Dec. 22, and 61-31 to St. Anthony's of Jersey City at Kean University last Saturday.
"Playing at Bishop Loughlin on a Friday night is a very difficult environment. They came out strong and we were on our heels," said Buckheit, who saw a last-second Kukulu trey miss to conclude the Xaverian loss. "They're a top-five team in the city, but I'm proud of the way our kids responded."
Loughlin played both zone and man defense, "using a 2-3 zone trying to neutralize Hassan," noted Buckheit. "But he took over in the third quarter. As a team, we did a very good job in the second half executing our halfcourt offense, and that enabled us to take the lead."
But after Kukulu's trey attempt from the left corner hit off the back rim, the Lions iced it with a free throw for the final four-point cushion.

Man after watching some of this I'm not so sure this kid is 6'7". Maybe its the camera angle or something. No doubt about his athleticism though thats for sure.

Re: '13 NY SG/SF Hassan Martin (URI - Signed LOI)
I watched about the last three quarters. The height thing is hard to tell. I've seen him listed as 6'6"; having just turned 17, who knows where he'll end up. What is certain is that the game Martin will play in college is different than the one he's playing now, which is being matched up against the other team's center, lots of banging, playing under the basket. He didn't shy away from the contact, though. He runs the court well and watching him slashing to the hoop or finishing on a break away is a lot of fun. The quickness and the athleticism is readily apparent.

Yeah I noticed the same thing, although I only watched the 4th quarter, alot of playing under the basket.

Re: '13 NY SG/SF Hassan Martin (URI - Signed LOI)
Put him on a team with Biruta, Onyekaba, Aaman, and Hare (please, Jordan) and that will change. I could watch him jump and finish with those one-handed dunks all day long.
