Looking at centers in the A-10 as the criteria for
signing anyone, is short sighted.
If you think big and want to make an NCAA run,
you'll be up against teams with size.
Maybe some have forgotten when we went up against Arizona,
SMU and Kansas. Big teams, not teams with 6'7" centers.
Total slaughter from the inside out. Domination unseen in the A-10.
Iffy was brought in on potential. Earl was brought in out of necessity.
We need better to compete if you want to make any kind of noise
in the future post seasons.

I agree. I hope our goals are set much higher than doing well in the A10.

Crawl before you walk, walk before you run. I'm pretty sure we don't have to be worried about anyone involved in bringing in players having low expectations.

bigappleram wrote:Andrew and TP hit the nail on the head for me. One, could a "space eater" as some call it hedge out and blitz ball screens, cover his man out to 30-35 feet, and be a disruptor on defense. Our defense is a team defense...yes Terrell, Garrett and Hassan get a lot of credit, but Gil is holding his weight as well and is much improved on the perimeter and in general on defensive end. Second, how many "space eater" 5s did we face this year -- Larsen, N'Doye, Zack, Desrosiers. None of them hurt us all that much. My priority would not be to find a guy to fill a need in 25% of the games we play (at most) if he is unusable in the other 75%. So if we are going for a true Big he better be able to cover all the 5 men who arent really 5 men. In our league alone only 1 (GW) of the top 5 teams have true centers - VCU, Dayton, Davidson, URI do not.

To be clear before the "tall men lobby" comes pounding on me, I dont think we can win big time without another force down low to join Hassan, but I am less caught up with his exact height and size and more concerned with his skill set. Dan certainly has a system and style of play, guys will have to fit into that or I dont think he will want them. If anything I see us playing at an even more intense tempo next year, hopefully matching our offensive tempo with our offensive one.
I thought Larsen hurt us plenty and was glad GW didn't go to him more. Hassan is being asked to cover players like Larsen and Jarelle Wright, who have 15 pounds on him. Unforunately, Iffy isn't good enough to get minutes. And Gil is graduating. That leaves Earl.

I like Earl. On one play against GW, he ran faster than the guards to get back on defense. He's pretty athletic and will provide some good play for us.

Like I said earlier, Dan should just make Hassan grow 2-3 inches and the issue goes away.

Hassan growing 2-3 inches only solves your starting lineup issue. We have zero depth for real forwards after Gil leaves. Hass and Earl that's it, unless Iffy turns it around this summer. If the complete lack of players at the 4/5 does not attract a high quality recruit I am not certain anything will. Playing small is fine but we do need at least one more true PF/C

Nobody is saying we don't need size. But "low-post space-eating bangers" do not fit in with the style of defense we currently play and want to play in the future. Overpowering post players are very rare, especially in the A10 but even at the power schools. And just because some teams do have players who are 6'10" 240, it does not follow that the only way to beat them is to counter with similar players. Kansas lost to Iowa St (biggest rotation player 6'9" 215), and Temple (6'8" 220). Arizona lost to UNLV (6'10" 225) and Oregon St. (6'10" 225).

We've seen involvement with a few players above 6'9" recently. That is a good thing. Just because they don't weigh 240 doesn't mean that they are worthless. If they can rebound and defend effectively, that is all they need to do, at any size.

Agree that we need more frontcourt players. Everyone does. I don't think that Hamilton/Alexander should be written off because they aren't described as "thick" or "bangers."

All well and good, except we have a 6'7" center backed by a 6'7" guy.
Can't win against sizeable competition.
Iowa State? You forgot to mention they can actually shoot the ball.
Also, they got shelled on the return game this week.

So can all of those teams :-)

Certainly, for us to be successful playing small-ish, our shooting needs to vastly improve. Like you said, a 6'7" guy backed by another 6'7" isn't good, but there is no one advocating for that. We are just disagreeing about the type of player it should be. I would support a 6'9"-6'10" player who is on the thinner/more athletic end of the spectrum as opposed to a more physical player just because he looks like a traditional 4/5.

It is weird that we employ a strategy usually reserved for big teams all around. I think our guards bully the opposing teams guards often enough that we have statistics like a big tall team that can't shoot.

We really just have above avg size on the perimeter.

Each guy has a trait that makes him able to physically dominate to a degree. EC's height, JT's body/attitude, Jarvis's quick feet/feel for game, Biggie's not short and a bit wide, TJ strong body/great defense&Effort.

Then on top of all that there is Hassan Martin. Who has just been amazing behind these guys.

sf, not disagreeing at all. I'd rather have an athletic 6'9" guy
than a 6'11" goon, who can't move.

This kid doesn't look anywhere near as good as Chukwu, who is three inches taller and playing less than 8 minutes a game. And this kid would only have two years to develop. I'd be very surprised if Hurley takes a chance on him; I'd be surprised if any decent mid-major takes a chance on him.
Our days of taking the Blake Vedders of the world and hoping for the best are over.

Have to say I wasn't impressed by the highlight reel. I have to agree with Adam on this one. I'm not sure how good this kid really is or isn't at his position when going up against bigger or stronger competition than what was shown in that video.

If Dan is going to sign a juco, I would think they would be close to a finished product, not a project.

We need someone who can step in right away and contribute, just like the GM kid.

That kid Thompson from GM would be a model of what a juco center should be.
15 double doubles and 16 rebounds last night against VCU.

Thompson averaged 9.7 ppg, 11.2 rpg, and 1.08 blocks per game last year in junior college.
Hamilton averages 8.3 ppg, 9.2 rpg, and 4.4 blocks.

Juco stats are weird, because nobody plays a full game.
What ever happened to the Desmond Williams kid at CCRI?
Don't know why everyone is damning Hamilton, based on a two minute video?

I'm definitely not damning him based on the video, but just more saying I didn't see much from it that I can take positives from. If the staff thinks he can help then great, I'll of course trust their judgement over what I saw in a grainy internet video.

What I like is, he never puts the ball on the floor.
Catches and goes right up with the shot.
Seems to have good footwork. Seems quick to the ball.
I think we could do a lot worse.

Good timing with the blocks. Runs the court well. Not a "bad" passer. He has one of the ugliest shots Ive ever seen. That being said he will not be asked to shoot much next year. He could start right away with that size. I still think we need one more big guy. Preferably a freshman.

I cant get that song out of my head...

If we do get a big guy like this, and he's good enough to plug right into the starting lineup, who comes off the bench among EC, Hass, Jared, Jarvis and Iverson? Nice problem to have.

Definitely a much more impressive video than the original one. Long, athletic and looks like a lot of upside with coaching. Schools like SMU, Ark, Okie St involved shows you something too. Not a lot of 7 footers around. Imagine him and Hassan on the back line blocking and altering shots? Wonder if the G. Mason announcer would continue to say they have no shot blockers.

As far as I know, we haven't had an official visit at URI by anyone, since
Christion Thompson, back in the Fall.
PC has at least three people coming in.
VATech has these two, that we know of.
Does anyone think a highly recruited player is coming here
without a visit? I don't think Butler ever visited here, when he signed in the spring 2013.
Don't mention McGlynn, who's small potatoes compared to some of the
unsigned guys taking visits.
When we hear about someone taking a visit, then we might get a better
idea of who's coming in.
