Probably the single most talented player in attendance on Sunday was Salina (Kan.) Brown Mackie big man Macam Macam. Pushing 6-foot-11, the Boston area product is a legitimate four-star prospect capable of making an impact at the high-major level.
Macam is also certified as disabled because he is deaf. However, watching him play one would never guess that he has any kind of disability.
Big and strong, Macam was able to do whatever he wanted to around the rim. He chased down rebounds in and out of his area, swatted shots and even stepped out and hit some jumpers. A transfer from Massachusetts Bay Community College in the Boston area, Macam averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game as a freshman and those numbers should rise as a sophomore.
Macam plays spirited ball on both ends of the floor and has the tools to help out at a high level if his academics are in order.

A 6'10" JUCO center? So many people around here just got stuck at there desks thinking about baseball for the next 10 minutes.

Given his disability at least he wouldn't hear the moans and groans from the Ryan Center faithful if he misses free throw.

Interesting story and prospect. Remember Dwight Brewington his mentor who also played at PC. Good player, as I recall transferred out of there after a couple of years.

Good size, and talent, and need someone on staff

As a juco, sign him this spring, he plays this fall.
Actually, jucos aren't bound by the usual LOI rules, correct?

Being from Lynn, and apparently his family is here in Massachusetts, you would think that would be a nice pitch for him to come back to New England, be close to family and friends and play at a high level. Certainly has great size we could use and we can certainly offer him a lot of PT.

A man with a last name for a first name, and a first name for a last name? Over 6'8? Deaf? This could be our guy.
There was a deaf kid I played against growing up, he was a beast. Someone here probably knows him, I forget his name. RI.

It's almost like the staff knows what it's doing or something!! I'm already pissed he is getting less minutes than Watson though.

He must have been really raw when in high school in 2012. He was ranked #90 in New England.

If he can get into foul trouble in the first 6 minutes of the game, sounds like a big that will be a perfect replacement for our current front court.

Re: '15 JUCO Center - Macam Macam
I doubt anything is imminent with Macam and any school. His disability will hopefully allow for reduced requirements but his coach acknowledges that his acceptance at a 4 year college is complicated and they don't even know what the requirements are at this time.

Re: '15 JUCO Center - Macam Macam
True. That last "IF his academics are in order" is telling.
That could be dicey.
I'm waiting for the APR for the semester to come out.
UConn issued theirs, as "perfect".
This is someone you would take a chance on in norrnal circumstances,
but I'm not sure where we are on the APR meter.

Re: '15 JUCO Center - Macam Macam
When i was in college I took a sign language course over the summer for credit and can still speak the basics as of today (about 12 years later). It's easy to pick up relatively quickly and I'm sure if we sign him aboard then someone on the staff will be on it ASAP.
You can teach sign language, but you can't teach size.

Re: '15 JUCO Center - Macam Macam
The sign language stuff would get taken care of easily, the academics not so much if there is a problem.
As for the APR, we are getting closer to being out of the woods I think, but there still is that 2011-12 disaster to overcome.
Once that season's score is dropped from the calculations, we should be OK.
I think Ace is the resident ace on the subject, but she's been away from this board for awhile.

I'm afraid this has been kind of a tease.
If he's an academic train wreck, we're not going near him.
This may explain why ECU is the only other school said to be involved.

http://www.salina.com/sports/juco_small ... 70bd3.htmlMacam’s basketball prowess hasn’t gone unnoticed. Francis Flax has heard from numerous NCAA Division I and Division II coaches interested in securing his services.
The path to the next level is complicated, though.
“The jury’s out on what the NCAA will accept from someone who’s certified disabled,” Flax said. “He will not graduate from Brown Mackie. That doesn’t mean he can’t play Division I. There are provisions for certified disabled but nobody’s been able to tell me what they are at this time.”

If we ever want to be a decent program again, we need to take some chances on stuff like this. Academics can always be "worked on....."

Re: '15 JUCO Center - Macam Macam
Interesting story. I'm guessing this is a non starter.
Too many issues for a program trying to find itself.
I worked with a deaf woman, and she could read lips and speak
in a kind of garbled way.
What was funny was when she'd be arguing with her boyfriend,
you'd hear the usual stuff followed by a very clear and distinct, "FUCK YOU!"

Re: '15 JUCO Center - Macam Macam
I'd hate to think of someone's disability as an "issue" that would keep us away. The staff should try to see what kind of resources it could bring to bear to accommodate the kid. As a state university, we should have latitude on admitting a student with a disability, as well as the resources to accommodate such a student in the classroom. I have no idea what the interest level is here from a basketball standpoint on either end, but the decision should be about that not other "issues." Seems like there could be a good opportunity here for the program to be creative.

Re: '15 JUCO Center - Macam Macam
I get the feeling that when we land somebody, it's going to come from left field.
Someone none of us have heard about. That's the old "stealth" recruiting trick.
Whether it's a transfer, 5th year, or juco.
4 year players, it's harder to "hide" them.
TP, agree there, but if the kid's grades are a disaster, no amount of creativity will help.
The disability issue can be overcome otherwise.

a boy, who seems to be doing pretty well. He's about six or seven years old.
