1. He's looking for a better offer or 2. He really is just undecided.

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
Who can tell with kids?
Hurley can sit back and see
who's still available, who has a better than expected season,
and who has mutual interest.
There are quite a few top 150 not yet committed.
By the way, nobody seems to know where Cullen Russo
goes to school. Thought that was funny.

I think it ended up being the school in NC that's listed in his (Russo's) thread here but not positive that URI is even on him.
Come Spring, if Severe is still available, and the staff thinks he's a match, I can't see them letting the waiting game get in the way of that.

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
from zagsblog
NEW YORK — Jon Severe and his Christ the King Royals took the floor for their first game of the 2012-13 season on Tuesday afternoon at Cardinal Hayes in what was a shootout from start to finish.
Christ the King trailed until 5 seconds left before pulling out a 71-70 victory behind Severe’s game-high 33 points.
Severe started his onslaught with eight straight points to keep his team close early on. Severe continued to single-handedly punish Cardinal Hayes by nailing contested 3′s and stopping on a dime for pull-up jump shots in traffic. He had 18 at the break but the Royals still trailed, 33-30.
The second half was much of the same as Cardinal Hayes guards Chris Robinson (20 points), Shavar Newkirk (19 points) and Tyler Wilson (10 points) were relentless getting to the basket but still could not seem to find a way to stop the best player on the floor.
Severe kept his team within striking distance during the second half with another 15 points. The unassuming Severe demanded the ball and scored at will seemingly every time he touched.
The Royals followed suit with tough full-court pressure. Tailing by 1 late in the game, point guard Malik Harmon was fouled on a hard drive to the basket and hit two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to give the Royals their first win of the season.
SEVERE TALKS SCHOOLS
Severe holds offers from Rhode Island, Duquesne, George Washington and St. Bonaventure, with Rutgers showing interest.
The Rivals No. 43 point guard in the Class of 2013, he won’t sign until the spring.
It took Severe some time to warm up to the idea of the Rutgers program due to the log jam at the guard position and teams fleeing the Big East.
“Now that Rutgers is leaving the Big East for the Big Ten I’m considering them,” he said.
Aside from Rutgers Severe’s list is loaded with Atlantic 10 schools.
“I like what the A-10 has to offer,” he said.
Severe’s most recent visit was to Duquesne University.
“I enjoyed myself and Coach [Jim] Ferry is a great coach,” he said. “Hee’s from LIU and that’s my style of play.”

I'd love to see this kid in a URI uniform next season.
Starting to doubt it, because he's gaga about Ferry, and likes the idea of playing in the Big 10.

I am a subscriber, and according to Alex Kline, URI isn't even mentioned by Severe in his top five!
"Not to high if he decided tonight. Didn't mention them. He won't decide tonight. I expect it to come down to Bonnies, Duquesne, Alabama, Florida State and Virginia Tech."
Nice grammar!

Looks like he's playing the Kaza Keene game, waiting for a BCS
school to sweep him off his feet.
Rutgers hasn't even offered him. He hasn't visited any of the SEC schools that
he mentioned.
Don't get Duquesne and Bona in front of us, unless starting from day one is his goal.

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
Severe has been bumped up to a 3 star recruit on ESPN. He visited the weekend that Matthews and Martin committed; he would have a chance to be part of a very good recruiting class at URI. It all depends on what he's looking for.
This is from Adam Finkelstein (ESPN):
Three-star senior Jon Severe (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) was recently reported to be nearing a decision, but that is no longer the case according to what the sharp-shooting guard told ESPN.com. “I really wasn’t ready. I thought I was and then I changed my mind,” he said. “I’ll know when I’m ready now.” When we last caught up with Severe in late October, he was focusing on three Atlantic 10 schools -- St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island and George Washington -- and still considering a decision before November’s early signing period. Since he now won’t be able to sign until after the season, Severe said he sees no reason to rush his decision. “I don’t have a timetable. I’m just worrying about our season,” he said. “Every time we win more good stuff happens, so I’m just concentrating on the season right now.” That “good stuff” is the emergence of more and more high-major schools starting to express interest. While St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island and now Duquesne continue to be on him from the Atlantic 10, he also claims a recent offer from Alabama as well as growing interest from Virginia Tech and Florida State. “St. Bonaventure, Duquesne and Alabama are on me the hardest right now,” he said. “Rhode Island, too, but new [schools] are coming in, too.” While the allure of the high-major schools has clearly peaked Severe’s interest, he said he “didn’t really care” about the level of the conference. “I want to make an impact wherever I go,” he said. “I don’t care where it is.” One reason why Severe’s recruitment has continued to grow is because of the lack of shot makers left on the board in the 2013 class. While Severe describes himself as a “shooter, slasher and playmaker,” the simple truth is that he’s one of the best 3-point shooters left available, especially in the Northeast. He also plays the game with a chip on his shoulder with a prototypical New York City toughness. “Most colleges that are interested in me talk about my toughness on the court,” he said. With toughness, 3-point shooting and complementary playmaking skills, Severe is certainly one of the best guards left available in the Northeast.

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
Yep, of course we could. He is going to be a very interesting player to follow regardless of where he ends up. Not to take anything away from him, but the interest is so high right now due to supply and demand. Schools who had him nowhere on their radar are reaching a bit. If he wants the higher conference playing experience, will it turn out to be a mistake or will he adapt?

Seton Hall will see Christ the King's Jon Severe @jsevere23 tonight, I'm told. The senior has become very popular
Odd, since SH just signed a 3 star 2 guard today, Jarrod Wilbut out of Chicago.

Why are GW and Duquesne ahead of us on him??????
He's exactly what we need going into next season.
Perfect replacement for X after next season.

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
Agree we seem to be out of it, but I don't think the reason is that he's "blowing up." Given that Bonnies and Duquesne are still in the running along with a couple big boys, it doesn't seem to be a high-major vs. mid-major thing. Starting immediately could be a factor, and that wouldn't be happening next year.SmartyBarrett wrote:Gotta think we're out of the running at this point. He's blowing up.
Perhaps he was just never that interested in URI, for whatever reason?

He was on campus for a full weekend back in the fall, same weekend as Hassan Martin, he kept naming us as one of his top schools after that but it definitely appears that other schools have kept a higher level of contact with him. It doesn't seem to be a match.

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
Maybe after speaking with Severe, Hurley knew he did not have the necessary mindset to work his ass off at all times in his 4yrs in Kingston. Dan's not just looking for talent, but also needs the work ethic that so many players on the roster lacked when he arrived in RI last March.

One of our staff told me they were still in with him.
That was a couple of weeks ago.
Everything I've heard and read about Severe, seems that he'd be ideal for this program.
Maybe he didn't click with the existing team here?

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
More than work ethic or chemistry, I think it's more that he wants to know that he can come in and play and get solid minutes from the start. From our perspective, we see Munford as a 2 guard and not a lot of solid depth behind that. From Severe's perspective, he may see Powell, Minnis, Matthews, Munford, Buchanan, even Reischel depending on the match-ups and not see where he fits in. It's an unstable roster for next year, in the sense that there are 6 players who have not stepped foot on the court yet mixed in with 5 who have. Other teams who will have less turnover might seem a bit more certain to him. His coach is saying GW and Duquesne could have him starting as a freshmen. That's not going to happen here. Someone else might go with the higher ceiling program rather than immediate minutes, it all depends on what they feel is important.

Severe is a 2 guard, Matthews is a one. Munford is the guy he'd have to
beat out next year to start.
Not gonna happen.
It's up to staff to give him an idea where he'd fit in, just as they did with Matthews, and Martin.

Which I'm sure they are/have, but you know as well as I do that there are a lot of people getting in these players' heads.rodfromcranston wrote:Severe is a 2 guard, Matthews is a one. Munford is the guy he'd have to

Situations seem a lot more clear when you can say, for example, these guys are graduating, you and this other guy are coming in. We're excited by the turnover next year, but it makes it a little messy.

Re: 2013 NY SG - Jon Severe (Offer)
If the kid wants to play starters minutes right away he must look at other schools.....we cannot guaranted him the minutes....if you were the kid's parents and coaches you would have to advise him that coming to URI means less immediate playing time.....it depends on what's important to him....
....I'd love to have him come here but will understand if he doesn't.....I would have a harder time with it if we had the starting spot for him and he goes BCS to a school that swoops in at the 11th hour....
