Kid looks good. Only 17 years old. Makes nice passes and good moves to the hoop. Hands are very active on defense. I only see one outside shot and it looks a little weird, so can't judge his shot by this video. He's #9 in some parts of the video and #15 in others.

Oh, what-the-hell -- by the time the Class of 2020 graduates from URI, the front-line should average about 5'10"……

Monteverde currently playing in City of Palms Tournament.
They had a close call winning by only 3 points last night against St Francis. Ben Simmons with a monster game of 18 rebounds and 37 points for Monteverde - he is headed to LSU.
Ponitka had 2 points going 0-6 fg and 2-2 ft but he is solidly in the starting lineup for Top Ranked Monteverde.

Monteverde to lose #1 Ranking after losing last night. Monteverde had won 45 consecutive games.
Ponitka had 5-11 fg, 1-5 from three for 11 points and led Monteverde with 4 assists in the loss.

Ponitka with a big 17 points for Monteverde in the Championship Game of the Les Schwab Tournament in Portland against West Linn. Linn upset Wheeler High School in the Semi-Finals making a highly anticipated repeat match up not happen of the Monteverde - Wheeler Game that was played for the Championship of the City of Palms in Ft Myers weeks earlier.
Many wanted to see a Ben Simmons of Monteverde and Jaylen Brown of Wheeler repeat match up. Calipari is watching Jaylen Brown in person tonight as he does his typical superstar recruiting touring.
Would love to see Ponitka come to URI - he is playing on the top HS team in the country and fulfilling a vital starting role for Monteverde.

ESPN and Max Preps have him at 6'2".Unranked, too.
We don't need him. You have EC, Terrell, Thompson, Biggie,
Butler, Reischel and Garrett. Seven guys for two or three positions.
You only have Martin, Butts and Watson (maybe Iffy) up front.
Three guys for two positions.
If you want to be a serious NCAA team, you need balance.

Rod, it might depend on whether we have more scholarships to give.

I don't think we should go after him either. Maybe another PG for 2016-17.

With currently 2 open spots, we need size. And more size. Hassan could use some more help inside. Watson will be a senior. Butts seems like more of a 3.

I don't have any problem with picking up a juco. Ready to play, as opposed to a raw freshman.

I don't think we need 6'10"+ guys, but 6'8" or 9 that can bang, rebound, and score a little?

Do they grow on trees? Ha ha.

I would rather get two bigs with the two available scholarships. But, at this point, I'd be happy if we can get one. If we can get one big who can contribute right away, I wouldn't mind adding another good guard. The way we pressure all over the court with the guards now, depth at that position is good to have. But as I said, in a perfect world, I'd rather have two bigs, as long as they can play.

We have two scholarships for sure, left.
I'd hate to see it wasted on anything but our biggest need.
Hurley has said the same, many times.
Bigs are a top priority with him and his staff.
As for defense, Euros aren't noted for their hard nosed defense at
any position.

Signed good big men has never been easy here at good 'ol State U.

Hopefully recruits will see the opportunity to be the last missing piece of the puzzle [as long as Thompson is the shooter we need].

Rod is right, we are a quality big man away from a Sweet 16 or better team.

Playing the 5 alongside Hassan and getting quality PT should be a pretty enticing prospect, one would hope.

I'm watching them play right now. Ponitka appears to be about 6 inches tall, but that's probably the tv's fault. He can handle the ball, but I wouldn't say he's the pure pg type. Obviously, Ben Simmons is the best player on the floor.

Monteverde playing this week in the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans.
Ponitka's teammate, Ben Simmons is the #1 ranked HS Player in the Nation. If he could go pro this year he would likely be the first guy drafted as stated in this article.
Simmon's visited LSU during the trip for the Sugar Bowl Classic since he is going there next year.

http://www.wafb.com/story/27787944/lsu- ... -louisiana

Marcel Ponitka SG is the #56 ranked player by Florida Hoops and has a 4 Star ranking. Interesting as Simmons is the #1 ranked player in Florida (and the US) but now the #2 ranked player in Florida is also going to LSU - Antonio Blakeney who dropped Louisville and opted for LSU.

"The highlight you see above comes from Hoop Exchange Fall Festival in Orlando on Saturday. It includes two truly nasty plays: point guard Marcel Ponitka — a Polish international who seems poised to explode on the national scene this winter — dropping a defender with a crossover. Literally dropping him. From there, Ponitka cuts back to the middle, freeing all-everything recruit and USA Today High School Sports athlete blogger Ben Simmons to cut along the baseline, receive an inch-perfect pass through the lane and finish on an authoritative dunk."

Rod,
I am simply posting information in the recruiting threads that I find.
Not going to get into whether I want or don't want any particular player because it is not up to me anyway. Just looking at players we have offered or have expressed interest in.
I will be in Springfield for the Hoophall on MKL weekend so I'll have a better opinion myself.
I am partial to players who are in starting lineups for Top 25 teams because of the level of talent it takes to make these teams and especially to make the starting line up but I have not seen Monteverde play this year live yet.

Give us a scouting report when you get back.
I just talked to someone who went to a recent tournament and said there
are a couple of huge bigs in New England prep schools,
who aren't signed and are pretty good.
He mentioned their names, but I didn't see them mentioned here,
so I guess we're not in on them.

Maybe Dan can attempt the LSU strategy of recruiting and hire the #1 player in the country's Godfather as an assistant coach. Like the old Larry Brown and Ed Manning thing.

If he's talking about '16s, there's Jordy Tshimanga and Terrell Brown, the kid from St. Andrew's. They are both 6'10" and highly rated. I think they are both on our recruiting page somewhere. The highly rated '15s are all signed. Some of the ones not signed but not as highly rated are Collin McManus, Nick Pasquale and Joe Schneider. They are 6"10", 6'11" and 6'9" respectively. I have no idea if we're involved with any of them or how good they are, haven't seen them play. Do any of those names sound familiar, Rod, from the talk with your friend?

Rick Pitino hit a trifecta when he hired a new assistant in April, 2011. He hired Kevin Keatts who was the head coach of Hargrave Military Academy. Take a look at Louisville's current roster and you will see 3 players from Hargrave--Anton Hill, Terry Rozier and Montrelz Harrell. Of course, Harrell and Rozier are the top 2 scorers on the teqm this year.

I watch Monteverde in their game against undefeated
Oak Hill.
Monteverde is coached by the arch enemy of the Hurleys,
Kevin Boyle.
Simmons is awesome. Does everything.
It's a shame anyone good is one and done, these days.
Anyway, Ponika played plenty, buy didn't really seem to do
anything noticeable.
Rodney Miller, who some touched on in the recruiting discussion thread,
is a junior, and doesn't play much.
Oak Hill is listing him at 7'. His recruitment will likely blow up
next season.

Joe Hampton (http://keaneyblue.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3431) plays for Oak Hill too. I saw him get a technical foul after a Montverde player blatantly took a shot (kind of more of a grab) at Hampton's groin.
