'16 F Joe Hampton

Unread post by Bos8 »

I posted something in Reggie's thread, but figured Joe deserved one of his own. Heard we are getting involved in DC Premier/Dematha F Joe Hampton. Class of 2016. 6'6' strong, left handed kid who has been expanding his game out to the 3 point line.

Strengths:
Joe is a big, strong insider. He's got improving skills and can score from the block out to 15 feet. He is a lefty that can knock down open 3 when trailing the play on the break and has the ability to come off pin down screens as well. Hampton also has the ability to shot fake and straight line drive a bad closeout. He finishes through contact and does a great job of drawing fouls. He is a very crafty scorer in the lane and he also likes to spin off defenders along the baseline to gain an advantage to score at point blank range. He can finish above the rim with time to gather and explode. This big body forward is a good area rebounder and will sneak in for a back breaking tip in if not aggressively boxed out. He's fairly dominant in his age group right now.

Weaknesses:
Conditioning will be an important part of his development. He needs to be in the best shape possible as he prepares to face older guys. He's undersized as a four right now. Hampton will have to work on playing lower in the post in order to hold his position and finish better. He also must work on his right hand in terms of ball handling and making a move off the dribble when being pressured.

Bottom Line:
He has the strength to be a dominant high school player. He plays extremely hard all the time. He creates match up problems with his size and skill which allows him to be a high major recruiting target. If he adds a few inches he could be special but his early productivity puts him among the top 2016's.

DC and MD is a hotbed of talent. Cox has seemingly already built us an inroad to the area. I'm excited about the prospects of this marriage!

Yeah it may take a year or two for it to really show any results, but this is an exciting potential place to be involved.

DeMatha is a storied program. Alums include Kenny Carr, Adrian Dantley, Sidney Lowe among another score of NBAers. It's nice to see us involved with a couple of their players.

Agreed. In this case, though, one of his future Oak Hill teammates has also already committed to PSU, so it might stick. Butts is only a '15, and they've already taken time to watch him this summer and keep the verbal secure. Staffs work to get the commitment and keep going until the guy steps on campus.

You can tweet about a recruit but if you use @recruitsname then that's considered improper contact. I've got the letter to prove it

three Hail Mary's for my grievous sin?
Who's "young Joe" anyway? It didn't say Joe Hampton on the tweet.
This stuff happens every day across collegiate sports.
You know what? There's not a damned thing the NCAA can do about it.
They can't even do anything about UNC, who they've investigated for years.

the real issue in my mind is that the NCAA is skewed in there doling of justice and some programs might want to over-react to these types of communications to be on the 'safe side'

I think the signing period starts next Wednesday April 15th. Goes until May 20th.

Expecting a nice surprise [or two]

With 3 available scholarships, I wouldn't be surprised if Dan leaves one open.

We may hear about players before the signing period
begins.
That's usually how it works, except for CFL. who shopped at
Dumpsters R Us, during the summer, to fill the roster.

It was just announced that Joe has left Penn State.
I have yet to hear anything about it... but connecting the dots, I would not be surprised to see us get involved with the former four star prospect. He played for DC Premier, so this is right up Coach Cox's alley. With the line that Koch had in his most recent article about a transfer being in play, everything seems to line up with us at least reaching out.

Saw this kid on tv a couple times when Oak Hill was playing on ESPNU. Would definitely be a solid pickup for URI.

The Pat Chambers era in Happy Valley has been a flop so I'm not surprised at this development.

Wasn't this kid an ESPN100 guy? I'm in favor of URI adding ESPN100 guys anytime they possibly can. I understand it's a crapshoot but who doesn't get all hot and bothered by seeing Top 100 next to a URI recruits name.
