Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
Don't know much about him other than that he averaged 14 and 5 as a soph at JMU, and the schools he is looking at are Michigan State, Rutgers, Dayton and Rhode Island.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
So he's either a big guard or a small forward. Numbers aren't bad, although only 30% from 3. Just by going what schools are looking at him, it's worth a look.

We are so far passed Plan Z if we are going after a kid like this that this is like Plan Charlie Alpha Zulu.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
Another NJ player. One of the more promising looking transfers. I would think Cox would help with this.
If they were to get Cooke, though, I hope they pass on Ingrahm.

Yeah for sure, we don't want kids that Michigan State is interested in, we're better than that!!Gonebarongone wrote:We are so far passed Plan Z if we are going after a kid like this that this is like Plan Charlie Alpha Zulu.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
First of all, wake me up when he ends up at Michigan State. More importantly, you want to sell me on a guy like that being the last piece of the pie on a good team, I can be sold on that. A wing off the bench on a roster with 8-10 guys who have been on a team since they were frosh? Sign me up. Building on JUCO's, transfers, duct tape and bubble gum is a recipe for failure. The exceptions are rare and notable because they are so rare.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
GBG, I think the new exception is a program built ONLY on 4 year players. There are countless programs that are hanging with the big guys because they are using non-traditional methods (euros, jucos, transfers, 5th year seniors). Almost every program out there, even Duke has taken a transfer the last couple years when before recent memory I can only recall Rashown McLeod as being a prominent transfer into Duke. Who is saying Cooke is the anchor to our team? EC and Hassan are the anchors, along with Garrett, now its about filling in the pieces around them. By your measure this should make a kid like Cooke a compelling piece to add to the puzzle.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
Interesting...I forgot about this guy. Given the current roster composition, I'd definitely be ok with taking a promising transfer who sits out a year.

Couldn't have picked a nicer day. If they're still looking at guys, I imagine they expect Powell to give up the scholarship (or he has already).ace wrote:

Could still use a swingman. Of course, Cooke would have to sit
out a year.
Nice player, though.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
Unless someone unreported is leaving the program (doubtful?), the fact that he's visiting would have to suggest that Powell is indeed returning as a walk-on and not counting toward the scholarship limit.

Well, TJ, Terrell, EC, Minnis, Garrett, and now Powell, likely ahead
of Butler.
That's six players this year and four next year.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
I know he is deep on the bench but just as Butler was not in line to play point guard. I do not see Powell or Biggie playing the two guard and shooting the three. Not everyone has a chance to play big minutes and Butler could still get his chance before he graduates. It is not always easy to recruit decent players to be backups and the benefits of continuity are overlooked. I sincerely hope Butler stays with the team.rodfromcranston wrote:Well, TJ, Terrell, EC, Minnis, Garrett, and now Powell, likely ahead

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
a 3pt specialist can be very useful....look at that kid Troy Daniels on VCU, who is now playing for the Rockets. all he did was bust zones and park himself in the corner...and play D. if butler can hold his own defensively and shoot the 3 at 40%+ he will find time on the court eventually.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
Well, you can't have it both ways.
If you want to bring in Cooke or Peters, somebody has
to go.
Transfers take up a year of a scholarship, when they're sitting out.
Either of these two would present a roster problem, if things
remain status quo.

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
This kid is not just a specialist, but a well-rounded multi-skilled player who has a much better upside than other transfer candidates mentioned for URI. Also, wasn't Matt Butler added to be the "3-point specialist"???????

Based on what? Rankings?
Who cares?
We need a swing player, and this guy is a proven one.
Rather have him than an overrated guard who can't hit the ocean with
a beachball.

A poor freshman year does not define a player's potential or the type of career he will go on to have.

Cooke has reached his upside, Roddy is not even close.

i wonder if that ticket email timed to the JT announcement received above-average response.....certainly seems like the base here has grown and gotten louder from 30 days prior.

No offense, DC, but check out the kid's stats -- he's a sophomore and increased his output in nearly every statistical category, almost tripling his ppg, etc., I'd hardly call that "peaking."DC_Rams wrote:Based on my own personal analysis and opinion, which I am entitled to.rodfromcranston wrote:Based on what? Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
I was told Cooke is on campus.
However, after the case of mistaken identity last week,
I'm not getting excited.
That Tom Izzo and MSU are interested in this player, says something
about his game.

Any updates on if he's taken any visits yet? I recall there was a deleted tweet on Monday that said he was on our campus, not sure if that actually happened or not.

Hey to be fair, sometimes its hard to get that ball in the ocean, all that wind and sand blowing in my eyes....rodfromcranston wrote:Rather have him than an overrated guard who can't hit the ocean with

Really at this point, I'm feeling good about DH bringing his vision to fruition at Rhody, so I'm interested in recruiting info and of course have my opinions, but I just can't wait for November once again!
Blanket statement to all being recruited by URI Men's BB...
Come to Rhody, something special is happening, be a part of the family, be a member of the next New England team to win a national title!

I like the what I'm hearing about this guy. But I am really getting tired of all this 'sit out a year' bs. I guess its worth it for the experience your getting in the transfer. But then we are right back into the 'rust' games...

Re: Charles Cooke, JMU transfer
Once a team has most its pieces in place, it's not quite as frustrating to wait the year for a worthy transfer. I think part of our apprehension springs from the fact that the last guy left the cupboards bare and DH had to get as many qualified bodies on board as possible, the transfer situation going forward should be closer to a more standard, much less frequent occurrence, I would imagine. And I wouldn't want to shy away from the right transfer, when he comes along.

Ok, but the situation in 13-14 was exceptionally unusual.Ram Stampede!!! wrote: But I am really getting tired of all this 'sit out a year' bs. I guess its worth it for the experience your getting in the transfer. But then we are right back into the 'rust' games...
Three freshmen plus three transfers plus a high schooler who had to sit out a year to work in.
Then, a guy moved back home.
Then, two returning players were off the team by December.
TJ and X are the only guys who played full consecutive seasons. That's a lot of pieces to work into a situation with almost no stability. Last season was rough, but once you're a bit removed from it (and have the fun of a new, good recruiting class), the way that team continued to fight is kind of impressive.

He's played 2 years, so would be in the same class as EC, Hassan, and Matt.

Two A-10 teams competing against an NCAA perennial title contender. Excellent!!!!!!!
Projecting the recruiting classes of 2015, what would playing time be at MSU????? Affect URI position targets???
