Not one thing. I highly doubt that we are.

Yeah it seems Cooke is not the focus right now, at least from the few reports out there.

Never hurts to have a backup plan. We didn't have one in the
last Terrell cycle.

What? Iowa St. has jumped into the lead, but URI is on Cooke's list, and SWC reported the staff is all in and the Hurley Sr. is close to the Cooke family.Billyboy78 wrote:I haven't seen anything saying we're involved with Cooke.
I'm still hoping for a visit.

On the plus side, he could fly to Iowa, see all that Iowa State has to offer, get back on the plane and be home for dinner.Billyboy78 wrote:Hallice Cooke @Hallywood_3 · 2h

Re: '13 NJ SG Hallice Cooke
Seems very unlikely... I think I saw one tweet initially that we were interested. Lots of competition from some very good programs. Even with the St Anthony's connection I doubt it's enough to land this guy.

Hurley wasn't interested the first time, isn't interested the second time. Hard to figure.

We don't need a shooter anyway. Way too much depth at that position.

Disappointed we couldn't get in on this kid. Especially since he is visiting 2 A10 schools. Already visited St Joes. Visiting Dayton today.

What's strange also is the connection to St. Anthony's and Bob Sr.
Dan must not be interested, or else you would think he would at least consider URI.

Mind boggling. The much ballyhooed St. Anthony connection
is a null set.
Have we even offered Markis McDuffie?

Iowa a State it is. Shame, would have liked to see him in the A10. And I still don't understand why St. Anthony to Rhode Island/Buffalo was an immediate assumption.

Re: '13 NJ SG Hallice Cooke
Really, Ace?
Hmmm.... well the father has a great high school program and the
sons head college programs.
When Dan was hired here, the assumption was that there would be a
pipeline between St. Anthony and URI.
It was written about in nearly every article about Dan's hiring.
So, now, we shouldn't have had the same thought?

Re: '13 NJ SG Hallice Cooke
Yeah, really. Any fan is free to have whatever idea he or she wants. I know what has been written; I also know what those directly involved have said about it. People (media, whoever) have the stories they want to tell. Doesn't mean they're accurate. I just don't understand coming up with an idea, popular or not but really without proof, and then getting upset when it works out differently. If a coach can't be bring talent in, then sure, get upset. But if it's done in a different way than what was assumed, then no, I don't get it. In any case, the power is shifting away from high school coaches anyway.rodfromcranston wrote:Really, Ace?

Its not that we assumed URI would get first crack at every recruit coming out of St.Anthony, just that maybe we'd be involved with some recruits once in a while where maybe we wouldn't be if it weren't for the Hurley connection.

Well since you know what everyone involved has said about it, why
not shed some light on it for we non cognoscendi?
None of us hatched the idea of a pipeline with St. Anthony out
of our imaginations. People who seemed to be in the know,
promulgated the idea.
I wasn't aware lock step thinking was required here.

Re: '13 NJ SG Hallice Cooke
Teams like St. Benedict's or AAU programs like Expressions regularly send entire starting line-ups to major conferences teams, all in the same year. They're an excellent program that wins, but St. Anthony of late has 2-3 guys a year who end up playing Division 1. In '14, Tarin Smith went high but the rest signed with teams in the Sun Belt or Patriot conferences. The '13 Brown(Temple), Cooke(Oregon State), and Brooks(Marist) class was good. URI was final two for Brown. The combination of quantity/quality of players is just not there for there to be talk of a pipeline. Beyond that, if you're looking for a Hurley connection (St. Anthony to Rhode Island or Buffalo), there's three perspectives (college coaches, high school coach, player). I don't think Bobby or Dan necessarily know more about the St. Anthony players that could play at their level than other college coaches; players in quality programs are pretty well known in general. Some may think that Hurley will push his Friars players towards one of his son's programs. That's suspect. He's been pretty clear about not really being a part of the recruiting talk/sales pitch when they have been after one of his players. It's a complicated dynamic, to say the least. From the players' perspective, the Friars players know Dan and Bobby and what they've done in basketball, but I don't think playing for Bob Sr makes it more or less likely that they'll choose to continue to play for a Hurley. That's not a criticism of anyone; it's just that the players have options.Running Ram wrote:Its not that we assumed URI would get first crack at every recruit coming out of St.Anthony, just that maybe we'd be involved with some recruits once in a while where maybe we wouldn't be if it weren't for the Hurley connection.

I agree with Ace. Always seemed presumptuous to expect Bob Sr to deliver players to URI

How exactly is this playing out?
He played at Oregon State in 13-14, sat out 14-15 (because of the transfer and also because he was recovering from hip surgeries), played in 15-16. Sit one to play one? He was able to graduate in three years?

Re: '13 NJ SG Hallice Cooke (Iowa St Transfer)
You still get five years to play [no more than] four, so if he has been in school for three he should have two more years to finish his eligibility. I guess he can choose to sit one of those out if he wants, even though it seems like a poor decision from my perspective.ace wrote:How exactly is this playing out?

13-14: play
14-15: sit as transfer
15-16: play
16-17: sit as transfer
17-18: play
is the same from an eligibility standpoint as
13-14: sit as redshirt
14-15: play
15-16: play
16-17: play
17-18: play

Re: '13 NJ SG Hallice Cooke (Iowa St Transfer)
Yeah, I was wondering how his exact situation was going to play out. A guy like Jon Severe is said to be graduating in three years, so he's immediately eligible for Iona. I didn't know if Cooke had been able to pull that off. Someone will take him to sit one, play one, but you'd think he'd have to drop down in conference.

Re: '13 NJ SG Hallice Cooke (Iowa St Transfer)
A tough basketball break but obviously very fortunate that the issue was identified and can be addressed. I'll always root for a St. A's kid- good luck, Hallice! He'll have an opportunity to get into coaching if he wants it.

Wow what a sad ending to a roller coaster ride of a college career.
