Nice player, who we stopped recruiting about a month ago, at least.
We get to see some of our recruits who went elsewhere, right in the A-10!

As long as the disciplinary stuff checks out I would take a flyer on this kid. URI is closer to home, needs a PG and if Stevens thought he could play I'll trust his judgement.

He was the Mass. player of the year a couple of years ago, was he not?

Most of the recruiting sites list him as a SG. I'd be most interested if he could play PG

Back when, Bobby told me Castro was a nice player,
but too small for a shooting guard, and not a PG.

I have seen a few Butler games this year not sure I have ever seen him play, Chrabascz on the other hand is very good.

Why?

Why? He is a very talented PG that's why. I know he will have to sit out next year but at this stage in recruiting we will likely not be getting the PG that we truely wanted, like Garritt. I assume we might be able to pull a juco or somebody good for next year but not somebody of Castro's level.

If take him in a second if his problem at Butler was just that he was too far from home. I would have taken him last year and I'd still take him now. I'm not worried about the "tweener" size thing. At this level that isn't a big problem. We need guys that can play.

HE'S NOT A POINT GUARD!
I'll take Bobby's opinion on point guards
over ANYONE on this board.
Besides, he'd have to sit out a year, and we need people that can help
ASAP.
Also, you don't get suspended for feeling far from home. Geez!

Right....but I don't care whether he plays PG or not. We could use an off-guard/combo guard type. Also, I trust Bobby's opinions on PGs, too. So if Bobby says he isn't a future hall of famer I'll take his word for it. But that doesn't mean he isn't good enough to play it some for us - what are our alternatives?

As far as being able to play next year: yes, if we had to choose between a guy that could play next year and a guy that has to sit out, I'll take the one that can play right away. But we don't have to choose. We could have four open scholarships depending on Aaman's situation. We had six players dressed on Saturday. We aren't in danger of having too many players. I'd use a spot on this kid if he was available, and I'd still try to sign a JUCO guard for next season.

True, but we stopped recruiting him, long before he declared for
Butler.
Doesn't that tell you something?
In theory, Preston Murphy was a 6'1" combo guard, and he worked out
alright. If he can shoot, why not?
I don't vehemently object to Castro coming here. I just wonder staff's
thinking on him, considering their decision not to pursue him last year.
It could have just been they had decided, EC, Scoochie Smith or Josh Brown
suited their needs better.

I haven't seen him play, but we were recruiting him for a time. Regardless of position, we need more bodies, even if they have to sit out. We've had 8 scholarship players for two years now. If he can play (and many respected coaches think he can), then sign us up.

The good thing is that the staff evaluated/recruited him last year. So it's either they think he can help and will reach out or this is one of those players that the Hurleys thought was over ranked and they're not surprised it didn't work out at Butler. (My guess would be the later.)
The suspensions were for acting out when he wasn't getting playing time. Not a great thing, but not criminal.

URI needs players for NEXT YEAR. NOT THE RENE CASTROS OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL………WE ALREADY HAVE THEM.

My guess is, we get a juco and maybe even a transfer for next year.

Then one or two 4 year players, depending on Aaman's status.

We do need ready-made help for next year. Big time.

The other thing about Castro, he left Butler over playing time.
In two years, will he get any more time here, if we get Jackson, a PG and
a superstar in EC?
People here are saying grab him for depth. He doesn't see himself as depth,
obviously.

Rod, I see your point but you're projecting him to be behind guys that we haven't seen play and who aren't even on board here yet. If we don't get Jackson but instead take a JUCO, the JUCO would have one foot out the door by the time Castro is ready to play his sophomore season. I think they could find minutes for everyone in that scenario.

Operative word I used was, IF.
With all the comings and going in
college ball, not to mention our program,
who can say?

We don't need any more attitude on this team. Some of these kids leave a good program at the first sign of adversity. I don't know his situation, but, if he's leaving because he isn't getting the playing time HE thinks he deserves, without actually earning it, I'd pass on him.

Duct tape, bubble gum, transfers, JUCOs.

Pass.

Let's get 2-3 2014 guys here who are four year guys. Then again in 2015.

Transfers, JUCO's, post grads are guys who fill the gaps to put you over the top. Not building blocks. There are exceptions. But, they are rare.

Jucos and possibly transfers are coming for 2014.

You heard it here first. Band aids are not, we need them.

I don't get people who complain about the players we have now and then are dismissive about other players based solely on how they would come into the program. Who cares if a guy is a college sophomore or a high school senior? We need more players. Making rigid rules about where those players can come from is counterproductive. Would I "prefer" jucos or transfers? No, but I wouldn't rule it out, either.

From the show tonight, yes.

Looks like that's what will happen. Not saying they will all be, it depends on how many schollys we have to offer.

I wonder too, Iggy, how much credit can go to Keith Dambrot, the new HC giving Castro the opportunity and instilling confidence in Castro as well as the whole team? Will be interesting to see how they do Tuesday night at VCU.

This could be the only A10 player who feels like he has been around longer than EC. If you just scroll up this thread there are some classic KB back and forths...amongst the many threads where Rod was active, RIP. Does this thread pre-date DH? Cant remember if this was a late Baron recruit or early DH target?

Another example of what Dambrot is getting done at Duquesne???
