Damontre Jefferson, 2015 PG, Believe Prep: The 5-foot-7 floor general is a lot of fun to watch. He has great speed and looks to run on the break. While he has gained a reputation as a shot jacker in the past, he showed the ability to run the point guard position and be efficient. If this is the Jefferson we see from now on, he will rise in the rankings.

I like that we are offering Top 50 Players fromthe Class of 2015
I like tall PG's like EC at 6'5" always but I am also very impressed with Chaz Williams who is listed at 5'9" and 175 lbs.
I'm good with any guys Nationally ranked that Dan and company offer.

This guy must have extraordinary skills to compensate for his small size. I certainly wouldn't mind having him run PG for us, if he's the real deal.

who are we Duke all of a sudden? now a top 50 PG recruit isnt good enough for us because of his height? leave it to rambone to find a hole to punch in anything. have you heard of chaz williams? jacquez green? the kid on richmond who's name escapes me? how about bryce cotton at 5'11"? Are any of those guys good enough to play for your Rams, bone?

If he's got the mad skills needed to offset his lack of height, then fine.

There aren't that many great guards that height. But if he turns out to be that good, OK.

If Dan thinks he's good, then I defer. Thank you.

Tyreese Sullivan. I rest my case.
You can site three or four cases in all the basketball you've seen of
Ooompah Loompa PGs, but mostly anyone that small is
a liability on defense, especially with the new rules.

ok so i guess we wouldnt want shawntae rogers back in the day. i will tell you one thing, if you are 5'8" and a top 50 player that means 1 thing, you are really fuckin good. there seldom are under 6 foot guards that play div 1 Rod, so tyrese sullivan and his lack of efficacy is not the norm he is the exception. if you are that height and end up going high Div 1 it usually means you are very good. or else you end up Div 2. not many guys take undersized talent, but PG is the 1 position where you can get away with it. i highly doubt URI is in a place to solely focus on 6'4" elite PG talent, wake me up when we are at that point.

That's an extreme example, Tyrese Sullivan wasn't good on top of being short and was a questionable D1 recruit nevermind a 4 star recruit. But Hurley does like big guards so I think he'd have to really love a kid's game to go after someone this short.

thx for stating the obvious BFC, tyrese sullivan? puhleez if that is the barometer on anything. should i start listing the stiff 6'2" PGs we have had to back up my point. talent is talent, unfortunately we arent in a position to type cast and cherry pick when it comes to Top 100 recruits. at least i didnt think we were.

Jefferson tones it down, still excites

Not many high school players in America generate opinions that range as widely as junior point guard Damontrae Jefferson who ranks No. 36 nationally does. The bottom line in the eyes of Rivals.com is that the diminutive playmaker from Milwaukee has too much talent and ability to dismiss.

For the past few summers, the 5-foot-7 guard has regularly rung up opponents for huge numbers. He's done it in a flashy manner with lots of deep shots, quick drives and he's sometimes forgotten about his teammates.

Now at Believe Prep in South Carolina, Jefferson is really trying to change his image. On Sunday, he played under control, was communicating with his teammates, putting forth much more effort on defense and still making lots happen. He can get a shot whenever he wants, threw a couple of incredible passes and has nearly unmatched quickness.

Yes he is small and yes he is still a bit wild, but his 28-point, eight-rebound, four-assist and four-steal outing was one of the top performances of the weekend. That he is trying to change the way he plays and carries himself is easily noticeable and he now has offers from UMass, Southern Miss, Cleveland State and Rhode Island.

You can find failed D1 players at any height. You only need to find one successful guy to prove that a player that height can succeed. You can't know a player will succeed regardless of his height. If he is a consensus top-50 player and this staff wants him, I'm on board. I don't care what his height is.

Arguably NPSs’ most athletic player was Believe Prep’s Damontrae Jefferson. Listed at 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, Jefferson showcased his agility with numerous two-handed dunks during warm-ups. Then, when the game began, the shoot-first point guard used his explosive quickness and strong handle to frantically navigate the court and unleash shots from all angles. He connected on a couple three-pointers, but also showed an uncanny knack for draining shots from inside the paint using soft runners and teardrops over taller opponents. Jefferson also wasn’t afraid to hit the boards. He collected eight rebounds, oftentimes pushing the tempo once he assumed possession to facilitate transition opportunities for teammates. With six turnovers and four assists, however, Jefferson’s point guard skills are still blossoming.

a collegiate game.
He may have even been smaller.

5'6"with a freakish 48" vertical leap, went to play in Italy.

I'm almost certain he was a scholarship guy, with Baron thinking he could become a Marques Green-type player. Beyond the height issue, I don't think he had enough athleticism to play at the D1 level, or at least, not enough if you're going to be so undersized.

Cleveland State, UC-Irvine and New Mexico State have shown interest, and Jefferson said he wants to visit Rhode Island and Georgia Tech.
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketb ... z-williams
He has his lovers and his haters but the story remains the same. The diminutive point guard always produces. Cleveland State, Rhode Island and Southern Miss have offered. UMass and George Mason are recruiting him as well.
http://247sports.com/Article/Matz-Stock ... NPS-162816
Known for his wild style of play, Jefferson came to the NPS with a much more composed game. The Milwaukee Runnin’ Rebels lead guard showed improved shot selection, made pretty passes in the open court, and finished at the rim with the best of them. Now in the class of 2015, expect “Trae” to shoot up the rankings if he can continue to play at this rate.

I know one thing. He'd be fun to watch. His athletic ability is off the charts.... lightning lateral quickness and straight ahead speed, listed in some places at 5"5, yet can do 360 dunks. Check it out...

I would think with the new rules a player like this might be great. Distruptive player with quick feet.

St. Anthony's had a million small guards like this over the years. I think every team could use a lightening bug.

Just watched his videos. Looks like he has some great talent. I read earlier on this board he was hoping to change his image a little bit, which couldn't hurt. The first thing I said to myself while watching him was that he doesn't pass. I'm guessing he will learn to and probably has learned to judging by that video billyboy put up. I don't mind having a small guy as long as they are effective. He could be what we've been wanting Powell to be the past 3 years.

I disagree. I think we need guys who can score, especially if they can shoot from outside. I trust Dan to get roles sorted out once the pieces are on board. We need lots of pieces, though, and don't think we can be picky.

I think when you don't get picky and worry about balance and
team chemistry, you get Jim Baron.
I can't think of any team that went anywhere with a PG ball hogging.
Scoring can come from SGs and SFs. We need a distributor
not a gunner at PG.

This kid EC and Martin on the same club could be deadly. In most of these vids this kid has outrun everybody and has no where to go but to the rack, no one there to pass to....

Got a few Rondo moves he has obviously copied.....a new age Bob Cousy.

Like it.

Most of Phil Jackson's championship teams kind of eschewed the traditional point guards altogether, but that happens when you have Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant dominating the ball. Instead, they mostly seemed to focus on facilitators, spot-up shooters or defense first types, whether it was an older Ron Harper, Steve Kerr, BJ Armstrong, the immortal Mike Penberthy... I'm also not sure if there a strong correlation between a pass-first point guard and championships. The very best players just tend to get their own buckets anyway, as opposed to the second-tier all-time greats, like a Reggie Miller, who needs a good entry pass or multiple screens.
