I wonder if he is acquainted with Mike Powell and if this helps or hurts.....

You have to think a lot of these visits from guards are conditional, but it's the right way to do things... keep going until you know for sure.

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
Some people seem to think that Terrell is a sure thing. Apparently Dan doesn't know for sure, as you've said. Otherwise, why would there be any visits scheduled for any other guards from the class of '14?ace wrote:You have to think a lot of these visits from guards are conditional, but it's the right way to do things... keep going until you know for sure.

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
As others have said, yeah, you always want to have some contingency plans in place. Minds tend to be fickle and prone to change, considering the age of the prospects, plus there is always the slew of off the court issues that could change the mindset of the prospect or the program.Billyboy78 wrote:Some people seem to think that Terrell is a sure thing. Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
If you follow recruiting, there are no sure things. Even verbals don't matter that much, sometimes. Confidence is one thing, but until a kid signs the LOI you have to keep in contact with other players. It is a lousy but realistic aspect to all of this. As for Terrell, specifically, I don't know of anyone who thinks it is such a sure thing that URI should shut down its other recruiting efforts. I think we're in pretty good shape. But "sure thing"? I wouldn't say that. Note when this visit is schedules, and note when Terrell announces.Billyboy78 wrote:Some people seem to think that Terrell is a sure thing. Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
From the video, he can shoot, drive, pass and handle.
He looks like a smaller EC Matthews, physically.
I have been concentrating on Terrell's recruitment, and
pretty much ignored the other SGs here.
Time to look at who we've offered, and to what degree
of interest there is mutually.

If we're looking at 3 star type shooting guards, we already have one in Matthew Butler. He will have a year of development under this coaching staff. Now that Terrell is not coming, Butler would be a likely candidate to replace X.

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
Not sure staff sees it that way. Butler isn't a 3 star player.
Maybe a designated shooter type. There's a reason for all the offers
to SGs.

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
That will remain to be seen. I'd think its much more likely we see a combo of Powell, EC and Biggie out there most of the time.Billyboy78 wrote:If we're looking at 3 star type shooting guards, we already have one in Matthew Butler. Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
He's announcing next Sunday night. Rhody is scheduled to get a visit this Friday...

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Offer)
If he already decided to announce and he hasn't been here yet, I could see it one of two ways: he already knows where he wants to go, and we are throwing a hail mary, or he wants to go to URI and needs the visit to confirm. I'd say probably 90/10 in favor of the former without knowing anything specific about this kid, his recruitment and our level of effort in pursuing him, although I hold out some hope for the latter.

Yep, I read that wrong. By Sunday they meant today, despite the fact that the post is dated tomorrow....

In fairness, this kid never took a visit. Hard to believe we were THAT involved with him.

Dan got a guy like Munford 6 months before the season started. Recruiting is crazy. Relax.

I didn't click the story link before, but it says that he was announcing tonight, not next week. So that was the source of my confusion.SmartyBarrett wrote:He's announcing next Sunday night. Rhody is scheduled to get a visit this Friday...

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Murray State Commit)
I'm not worried. And this is from the official "sky is falling" poster on this board!
Dan will get his man [or two] in time.
Once the wins start coming, the recruits will too. That's in top 100 recruits I mean.

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Murray State Commit)
We had such a superb fall recruiting. based on no wins and a new coach,
last year.
Matthews, Martin and Oneykaba.
Recruiting front really quiet since the Terrell hysteria.
I'm wondering who we're actually involved with, beyond offers?
Could having Bobby around have made that much of a difference?

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Murray State Commit)
Rod, I imagine having Bobby around helped, that's for sure. It's made it a little tougher to recruit guards, or so it seems.
Bobby has the name as far as playing career by a mile, with those 2 titles at Duke. He also would be a major help developing future guard recruits.
Still, I don't see a big problem going forward. Other than the loss of Terrell, who the staff really wanted, there must be others on Dan's radar. We also need a 4, which we haven't heard much about lately.
It'll work itself out in time. We're going to get more top 100's in here, just might need results on the court first.
One more thing. URI is ALWAYS going to have to at least partially rely on "under the radar" type guys, who aren't being courted by all of the big boys. Just a fact of life. Even with a great staff, we simply can't compete with the biggest of the big. Won't happen. Dan probably knows that. At least I feel confident that he will find them!

Re: '14 IL SG JayQuan McCloud (Murray State Commit)
I think last year's class had less to do with Bobby and more to do with Dan's prior success. I think having the 8-21 mark as the most recent item on his résumé hurts a little. I wouldn't be mad if we punted to the spring with this class, when hopefully we'll have had one of the biggest turnarounds in the country and there is a lot of buzz with the program. We'd then be able to ride that momentum into next summer and next fall's signing period.
