Biggie Minnis scared off a lot of big schools, and got his academic straightened out
in time for a late signing with TT.

His pros are that he can shoot the lights out - which is our main missing link right now.

His cons are that he's A) not a point guard - OK, we're pretty deep there, and bringing in a PG in that same class - B) that he's not a good defender - OK, no one on our team really was before hurley got here, so he'll learn.

Looks like it's only upside for this kid. Damn we're gonna be good next year.

Kids who sign this late, and who don't seem to have a lot of options, set off flags to me. I trust Hurley and Preston but I'm not ready to say the kid is going to be a star.
I agree. Nothing against the kid, but not having any schools looking at him, makes little sense; regardless of grades, etc he would be on some schools list. eg West Virgina, etc. I hope I am wrong, but I remember that Hare was a 3 star, as is this kid; would not be surprised if he really isn't and this is truly a role player.

After all, it is not realistic that Hurley only signs all three and four star players at this time in the program.

Except Mike, but there were some other factors going on there.

Coach Hurley indicated that Matthew Butler hit 43 out of 50 3-point-land shots during his on-court evaluation. Wasn't that more then we hit as a team all last season?

These type of evaluations always remind me of the musket loading scene in Glory

Well, this is certainly something Rhody needed desperately, a shooter to open up space. 43/50 means almost nothing, really. The other reports are what are important. If you watch pre-game warmups at any D1 school, you will see bench warmers/walk ons make a dozen straight threes. It really makes you realize how good these guys are. Be nice if he was closer to the 6'3" Rivals has him than the 6'1" ESPN has him, though.

Sean -great analogy from the movie "Glory". As an instructor for 38 years, it's one of my favorites. I actually showed that scene on the day you posted.

I think I remember hearing that, back in the day (which is obviously relative, for me Jerry D/early Baron counts as "back in the day"), Dustin Hellenga wouldn't leave practice until he had made 30 straight. So obviously 43/50 is quite impressive and indicates that he can shoot it quite a bit, but as others have stated, it's not entirely unheard of.

Dan Hurley was impressed enough by the 43-50 that he specifically mentioned it. I think it is quite impressive myself.

What matters is that Coach Dan Hurley offered Matthew Butler a spot on the Rhody squad. If he hit 50, 22, 43, etc., makes no difference, because unless one of us saw the workout, we have no idea what the conditions were, with whom he worked out, and so on…..

Look at this film on him. He's not just a stand outside the 3 point line shooter. He's pulls up nicely into the lane for medium range , he's got really good lift and nice arch on his shot. He's not just a shooter, he's an athlete.

I want to clarify; I know zero about the kid. Pretty sure DH knows more than me. I just laugh when people get into a lather watching kids shoot unguarded in a video or a highlight reel. Every recruit looks like Lebron.

Especially in recruit threads, Rod. It is a matter of respect to keep these kids' threads somewhat clean.
