Thread from the old board

Including this article

Williams stopped by URI Tuesday on an unofficial visit and he left very impressed with the new coaching staff. “I really like head coach Dan Hurley and his brother Bobby. I think they’re going to take that program in the right direction and have a great future,” he said.

Williams has good size, and is a scorer.
Could be a good fit, with some local interest.

6'6" shooting guard, is intriguing. Averaged 21 PPG on 47% FG and 39% from 3.
Teamed with EC at 6'4" makes a huge backcourt tandem.

I don't know about yall but I prefer Williams to Pollard. I don't have much to suggest why I feel this way, but Williams numbers show the kid can flat out score. Also, the interested schools for Williams were a lot better than the schools interested in Pollard. Who knows which will be better in the long term but I'm not too broken up about Pollard choosing Dayton.

We should pass on Williams. He is a good player but maybe we should save a scholarship for the 14-15 season. We only have one senior
leaving from next years team. This means only one scholarship to offer unless someone leaves. The present transfers are already sitting out a year so we won't have many leave unless a few of thisyears players or next years recruits don't turn out to be what we and they think they are. I say save the scholarship unless a top player (like Woodson) or a top transfer signs on.

Not the worst idea. If they can target a top notch two guard in 2014 recruiting, and whatever the best player available after that, that would be fine.
If they can get Severe to sign for 2013, fine, too.
Hearing original 2 guard talent, Martez Walker might have academic issues.
Not sure of the truth in this, but for some reason, he's no longer mentioned, and is visiting Temple.

I say let's see who emerges from the '13 class that might have flown under the radar a little bit. 16 and 17 year olds are improving every day. There are sure to be kids from the '13 class who end up being big time talents who might have been considered 2 or 3 star who end up performing like 4 stars. Not getting Pollard could end up being a blessing. We could end up with somebody better. I would have liked to see Pollard here, but others will emerge in their senior seasons.

Saw this article in the Cranston Herald this week...

http://www.cranstononline.com/stories/T ... pe=stories

The article by Kevin Pomeroy, notes :
In the first game of the season, against Roxbury, CCRI star swingman Desmond Williams hurt his toe and had to leave the game in the second half.

A NCJAA First-Team All-American selection last season, Williams already had 26 points against Roxbury before leaving the game. Initially, the injury was believed to be a toe fracture. Now, though, after a second x-ray was taken, it’s become apparent that there is no break.
Williams is expected to return sometime this week.

On the surface – and perhaps on the scoreboard thus far – Williams’ injury was a big blow. The Torrington, Conn., native is a NCAA Division I prospect, and has received offers from multiple schools, including URI. But while the Knights were without their best player, they were able to increase the workload of a few other players, which could benefit the team down the road.

Well, Notice is blowing up. Severe is being recruited by BCS schools,
as is the OSU recommit.
Williams is big, and can score.
Could be the man for the job.

Maybe Hurley grabs Williams and set his sights on a 14 SG.

That's what I was thinking too. Williams comes in as a junior next year and Munford is a senior. Then, after Munford graduates, a kid like Rashard Figures, a '14 SG from Jersey, would fit in nicely as a freshman when Williams would be a senior.

I haven't seen him play but based on everything I have read on Williams he appears to be a perfect fit. I would rather have an older polished player at this point in our program as opposed to a freshman that needs to develop. Once we begin making the tournament and we can land top 50 recruits consistently I would rather take a higher tier talent in juco. Xavier Munford has certainly worked out well.

I hope he doesn't have a lot of games like the one he had against Suffolk (5-19 is no good for anybody), but I would definitely be open to taking Desmond on the team. Especially if things don't pan out with Severe (and it's looking increasingly like he will go elsewhere) or a comporable HS Senior w/ outside shooting capabilities.

Is Williams a shooter? His stats this year suggest he's more of a scorer than shooter (42% FG, 28% 3FG) but last year his percentages were much higher (47% FG, 39%). He is just coming back from an injury so maybe that's the explanation for the difference.

His shooting over the last 6 games has been terrible an he's getting a lot of his points on free throws.

If anyone has Cox on Demand, go to Cox Local if you want to get
a glimpse of Desmond Williams.
It;s CCRI vs. Roxbury CC, which is nationally ranked.
HE had 33 points. Hard to tell what kind of defense he plays,
because CCRI plays a zone.
Nice quick, smooth shot, with a very quick release. Good free throw shooter,
rebounds well, and had a couple of good assists.
Runs the floor well. Great size and mobility.
Preston was at the game.

Sorry for the hiatus. Going to get back on my game here.

Well CCRI's site offers stats, anyway. Here they are:
20.6 PPG
4.7 Rebs
2.7 Assists
3.1 steals
1.6 turnovers
80% FT ,47%FG, 39% 3 pts.
The game I watched was against nationally ranked Roxbury CC, and he got 33 points.
I'd say he was a player.

Yeah stats are definitely useful and thank you for posting them in the thread. I usually don't include them in the profiles because stats are very dependent on what type of competition you're playing against (and with, for that matter). I like to put the recruiting service info because it makes it easier to compare different players. Even though the recruit rankings and grades aren't perfect, they make for better comparisons than stats (IMO).

That website is rough, but I think those are last year's stats.

I think his numbers are down this year. He did miss some time with an injury, not sure how much that's affecting him.

Why would they put up last years stats? Odd.
TP, there's so little information on jucos. There is a site on Scout
called Juco Junction and there's almost no information on it, either.
Very frustrating for recruiting nuts.

In comparison, last year Munford averaged 16.6 ppg, 45% FG, 37% 3FG, 76% FT, 3 rpg, 2 apg, 1 spg. Iowa Western seems to be a higher level (Divison I) than CCRI (Division II) however.
