The more I think about it the more I want this guy at URI. We need an off-guard (preferably one with range) and I'm hopeful that by playing in a system where he's not relied on to be THE scoring option (see Munford, Xavier on the 2012-2013 URI Rams) his efficiency will go up. I'm also not against taking chances on JUCOs or other transfers. Experience helps, even it its at the JUCO level.

CCRI is close by.
They like his game. They like his size.
The fact that he's in control, and does a lot of things well.
That he has a good basketball IQ. That he plays for a good juco program.
Unless a better four year player falls into their laps, Williams could be the man.
His team does not really center their offense around him. Everyone gets plenty of shots.
GBG would be proud of them.

If it happens and everyone stays, here's how it looks by year
Martin, Matthews
Hare, Aaman, Minnis, Reischel, Onyekaba (for now)
Biruta, Buchanan, Powell, Williams

And that's 12 players, so I'd expect another freshman.
My guess is everyone does stay. While Hurley is updating the talent level i don't see him dumping players unless there's an effort issue, and I don't see that from the guys who can come back next year. And if players leave that potentially could hurt the program's academic standing.
of course players could leave on their own but I don't see that happening either.
But anything possible ....

Lots of concern over the academic standings. Nobody wants the forward progress to
be halted by by the GPA police in the NCAA. It would be disasterous on all fronts.
I'd rather have then err on the side of caution, until they're stronger than blow it all
for some player.
The NCAA is also going to put in a 2.66GPA transfer rule. If a player transferring has that, then he or she can
play immediately, not sit out a year.
It's why Hurley took his academic advisor from Wagner to URI. Wagner had the highest GPA in their league last season.

Kristen's good. The new standards will be interesting- saw a stat somewhere that around 40% of men's basketball players who were freshmen in 09-10 would not meet the new standards set for incoming players in 2016. We already know how slow the review process is for academics; the NCAA is going to have to get more people on staff.

I think he means that O's status still hasn't been settled. We're assuming he's eligible next year, but until they hear from the NCAA snail posse, they really don't know yet for sure.

Re: '11 CT SG Desmond Williams JUCO
The "for now" only refers to his status as a freshman or sophomore. His years of eligibility have always been a bit of a mystery, but it seems like the latest is he'll play his three, starting in 13-14, and then they'll petition for the fourth year.eli#10 wrote:"Ace"--what do you mean when you list Onyekaba as "for now".

Yes, I believe the remaining question regarding the Big O is how many years he will ultimately play. I think they would be shocked if he isn't eligible next year.

Re: '11 CT SG Desmond Williams JUCO
Here's my plan (unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, my opinion doesn't count). We get Williams and he backs up X next year. When he is a senior, Williams starts. Willaims graduates in '15. By that time, we're a great team and attracting top recruits. There is now a spot open for a top SG '15. Preston and the Hurleys get Eric Davis, the 4 star SG/PG from Saginaw Arthur Hill, Michigan. We are now stealing top recruits from Mich. and Mich. St.... Hare is now a senior, EC is a junior and Davis is a freshman. (Am I crazy?)
P.S. Davis plays at Hare's high school and plays on EC's AAU team.

wrong place to ask, but why is every recruit topic on this site a PG SG and maybe SF. The only PF isee is 6'6. Are recruits shrinking or do we not care about big men?

Staff is looking for a bigman, but to date, there are no names coming out.
We obviously need a shooter, or a scorer for SG. Williams seems to fit, for
reasons mentioned in this thread.
Why any PGs are mentioned, is beyond me. We have three for next season.

Re: '11 CT SG Desmond Williams JUCO
Villanova made the tournament and advanced a couple years basically playing three and four-guard lineups. I've always been a proponent of just playing your best five guys - force the other team to match-up to your best. If you're playing in the NBA, which is ridiculously competitive, then yeah, you do need to conform more to the rigid position definitions. But in the college game, with more than 300 Division I programs, you could probably even throw five guards out there at times and still win games, as long as they were quality guards.UCH21377 wrote:We are not the only school that is looking for bigs. Lasalle started 4 guards today.
Of course, that's the rub - To make that sort of strategy work, you'd need five legit starting guards, and there are a bunch of logistical hurdles to it. (i.e. How do you recruit five All-Conference players at the same position? Even trying to construct such a lineup from the past decade of URI rosters, I'm not sure you can come up with five that make it viable - Keith Cothran, Jimmy and Billy Baron, Munford and... Parfait Bitee? Marquis Jones? Howie Smith? Brian Woodward? Yikes...) But it would create nightmare match-ups for the opposing team, with the only issue being that you might need one of them to be more of a big 6'6" or a small forward with post-up skills, someone who can finish alley-oops or dunk quickly, just to keep the center from always helping out on a driving guard.

I trust that Dan will find a good big man. Remember the time-honored quote "A good big man is hard to find", or something to that effect.
But, he won't sign one just to sign one.
He will sign someone that will make an impact, and just as important, fit the "ideal" of the program.

I don't know what Reischel is listed at, but it looks like he's grown to me. Standing right next to Gil and O today, he was only about an inch shorter than Gil and taller than O. I'm guessing he plays the 3, and that's a pretty good sized 3. Obviously, he's a lot leaner than Gil and O, but he looks like he's got some good size.

I think Biruta and Big O are the same height. I thought the same about Reischel. He looks like 6'7", if the other two are 6'8".
He'll keep the SF spot warm until Martin come of age.
What I like is, Hurley said Reischel is a "lockdown defender", and a driver, who gets to the rim and finishes..

Coming out of high school, one concern about Reischel's defense was a lack of quickness. Maybe that's not the case?rodfromcranston wrote:I think Biruta and Big O are the same height. I thought the same about Reischel. He looks like 6'7", if the other two are 6'8".

I don't know. Munford says he's the same player he is, only taller.
Myabe you can't gain quickness, but better technique?

Re: '11 CT SG Desmond Williams JUCO
Was Reischel a 2 or a 3 in high school. If Reischel is growing, now maybe he will be defending a 3 instead of a 2, which would make the quickness issue not as big of a factor. There are plenty of guys that can lock down 3's, but struggle to defend the quicker 2 guards.

We [URI] are the "big dogs" of the schools chasing him. I follow basketball in the NVL. This is a big time football conference, but with the exception of the city schools in Waterbury, this league does not turn out a lot of D1 basketball players. He was a scoring machine in high school at 26ppg playing the small forward at Torrington. Took about 25% of his shots from beyond the arc. Primarily scored closer to the hoop. Good slasher.
