ESPN's Top 5 A-10 Recruits --- URI has 2 of 'em!

Unread post by Rhody74 »

Top Five 2013 Recruits

G E.C. Matthews
College: Rhode Island
Hometown/High school: Detroit/Romulus

The Rams earned this ESPN 100 commitment by besting teams from the Big 12 and Big Ten for his services. A tough and hard-nosed scoring threat, Matthews is best when he is removed from having to the run the team and free to cause havoc in the lane. He has a gift for contorting himself and finishing at the rim with strength and reliability. He'll play combo guard for coaches Dan and Bobby Hurley and hopes to eventually transition to the point.

SG Josh Brown
College: Temple
Hometown/High school: Jersey City, N.J./St. Anthony

A fringe ESPN 100 prospect, Brown is unique in many ways. He committed to Temple then decommitted only to come back to coach Fran Dunphy a second time. Brown is a typical St. Anthony winger who prides himself on toughness and will be a solid defender. His game is slashing to the rim, finishing and creating. What position will he play in college? Hard to say. He's that guy you begin practice with at one position and change your mind three times before the session ends. The one thing a coach won't do is take him off the floor.

PG JeQuan Lewis
College: VCU
Hometown/High school: Dickson, Tenn./Dickson County

VCU coach Shaka Smart is a proud evaluator of talent, and Lewis was a player the staff spotted a few years ago as it was chasing future UConn (now Vincennes University) center Michael Bradley in Tennessee. The Rams struck early with this veteran of a smaller AAU team and guarded him in July with the force of their full staff. Smart will lose Darius Theus after this season, so don't be surprised if he plugs in Lewis to play alongside Briante Weber.

PF Hassan Martin
College: Rhode Island
Hometown/High school: Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis

This is a power forward who you can't help but like. In the paint, he gives you a taste of everything and operates from a blue-collar perspective. The lefty is an extra-effort maven. He comes up with blocks, and he doesn't like to rebound; Martin loves to rebound. This is a get-it-done forward with a motor that is revved all the time.

PF Isaiah Watkins
College: Duquesne
Hometown/High school: Toronto/St. Benedict's

Good teams must have players like Watkins. He is a hard worker who takes tremendous pride in rebounding. In his area, he is a monster. Watkins is a team-first guy who understands when all the plays aren't run especially for him. He has played with talent beside him the past four years and hasn't minded cleaning up missed shots from his high school and travel team friends. His body is built for early playing time, and his approach to the position is wholesome and founded in being a part of a winning team.

Favorite phrase of this post:
"He doesn't like to rebound; he loves to rebound."

Rhode will be a headache for all who play us next year. The question really will be: Who will we get to play us?

I also enjoy that we were involved with both Brown and Watkins, if I remember correctly. It's great to see that the quality of recruits has been greatly increased.

Supposedly Brown came down to us and Temple. I wonder if
we got him, if Matthews would have signed here?
I don't think we recruited Watkins hard, after Martin signed.
I like our guys better than the others.

Unless this is a re-write, I believe it's from an ESPN Insider article, maybe from the Fall?

This is not a very complete representation of the top 5 A10 Recruits.............
The Highest Overall Rated A10 Player is EC Mathews - the Only Player Rated in all 3 Services.
It does not include the highest rated A-10 Recruit in DeAndre Bembry who is going to St Joseph's and is ranked #92 ESPN, but oddly enough not rated by Rivals in the Top 150 or in the Scout Top 100.

EC Mathews - URI - Ranked #99 ESPN, #101 Rivals, #76 Scout
Josh Brown - Temple - NR ESPN, #128 Rivals, NR Scout
JeQuan Lewis - VCU - NR ESPN, NR Rivals, NR Scout
Hassan Martin - URI - NR ESPN, #124 Rivals, NR Scout
Isaiah Watkins - Duquesne - NR ESPN, NR Rivals, NR Scout

Others missing:
Dayshon Smith - Dayton - #106 Rivals, NR Scout, NR ESPN
Kyle Davis - Dayton - #114 Rivals, NR Scout, NR ESPN

Possible this week:
Jon Severe - #141 Rivals, NR ESPN, NR Scout- Could go A10 this week - possibly to Fordham

It's an article from the Fall, some of those things hadn't happened yet.

But if your point is that there are a lot of good players coming into the A10 next year, then yes, that's true.

I think that is the point, that the article was old, but was posted in April with no mention that it was from last year.
Surprising though, if from the fall that it did not mention recruits for Butler and Xavier, but again, no telling when it was written.

I wrote this in the Martin thread on 10/15, so it has to be at least that old. This article recently showed up on the A10 board, which I guess is what led to it being posted here.

Regardless, Matthews and Martin received this much positive attention even before their senior seasons, which were very solid.
