I love talking recruiting, whether it's truth, rumor or lie. I just think it's an interesting, and obviously very important, piece of the basketball program.

Was it unclear that my comment about people getting worked up was in regards to signing JUCO's instead of players that will be freshmen? Otherwise, I don't really understand the progression of this conversation.BFC wrote:I don't think anyone is hitting the panic button but its still a fair observation that PF's and C's are lacking on Recruitment Corner.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Who's getting "worked up" about signing jucos?
Fact is, that's the place where schools go when they're either looking for a quick rebuild,
or filling a hole.
With the guys who have visited here, going elsewhere, the choices are, hoping someone they've had some contact with
blossoms into a player they might want, jucos, or transfers (possibly 2nd semester).
So, unless they have an international player stashed in Lower Slobovia, or they are performing an eyes only
secret recruitment, those are the options.

Previous conversations on here. According to some, signing JUCOs, even though it never happened, was somehow proof that the head coach can't recruit and is something only desperate, stagnant programs do.rodfromcranston wrote:Who's getting "worked up" about signing jucos?

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
A recruit is a recruit is a recruit. HS, prep, or Juco. If he can be productive in the classroom and on the court and Coach Hurley has faith that the recruit can help further build URI Basketball, that's what matters.

The poster I remember making that argument is the poster we all know is not a fan and will use any argument he can to criticize Hurley but then disappears once his arguments are blown out the water.ace wrote:Previous conversations on here. Yes, but then there were recruits to the cause. And maybe a reference to the brother-in-law in Field of Dreams. It was a dark time.

Northeastern. Yes, Northeastern, just got a verbal from
New Hampton prep 6'10" 4 Star, Jeremy Miller.
He's a former BC commit, who backed out last spring.
Did we even offer this kid?????

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
That guy was seeming so satisfied when others were piling on the criticism about Hurley, saying that the program couldn't recruit without Preston and Bobby, and he compared it to the brother-in-law in Field of Dreams finally being able to see the players. He alone had known the truth and finally others saw it as well. I believe it's in the JT thread... then again, just about everything is in there somewhere.rodfromcranston wrote:"And maybe a reference to the brother-in-law in Field of Dreams." Huh?

More of a 3 star, and a little bit of a project, but at 125 in Rivals that's a good get for Coen.rodfromcranston wrote:Northeastern. Yes, Northeastern, just got a verbal from

Let's make sure we get a lot of URI recruiting questions out there, need to show the following that the program has now.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
It's very hard for mid majors to recruit when they have a lot of players returning. URI has always had their best recruiting classes when they were down. For Hurley to get Butts and Thompson when they could have 8 of their top 10 players coming back us incredible

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Gil's and TJ's minutes will be available. Obviously Christion and Leroy will have to climb over people to get a lot of them, but they are there to be had. The big test will be after next year when we will open up a few scholarships but not a lot of minutes.

Meanwhile, VCU gets TWO shooting guards, both 4 star, top 100 players, including Tevin Mack, who chose VCU over UCONN. They're going to be tough to knock off of the top for the foreseeable future.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Kenny Williams, ESPN's #79 player, is a SG. Tevin Mack (#58) is a SF. Not too much distinction in our system since we go guard-heavy, but Tevin's not a 2. Kenny actually picked VCU over offers from North Carolina, Georgetown, and Indiana as well.Billyboy78 wrote:Meanwhile, VCU gets TWO shooting guards, both 4 star, top 100 players, including Tevin Mack, who chose VCU over UCONN. Definitely fun times for recruiting aficionados at VCU. Next year the squad will feature 7 ESPN100 signees.

It is really good for the A10, and therefore for URI, for VCU to continue to be a top tier national program.

Gives us a target. Will we ever get to VCU's level?
It's going to take a while. First things first, get to where we're competitive with them.
Maybe this year.

I guess we were involved with Martin Krampelj, a 6-8 forward from Slovenia who signed with Creighton last week.

The National Prep Showcase always draws a strong crowd of college coach and the opening day wasn’t any different. Among the schools Scout spotted in the stands were Villanova, Manhattan, Duquesne, Wofford, Creighton, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Providence, Quinnipiac, Minnesota, Mississippi, Penn, Providence, UMass, Holy Cross and Rhode Island.

Checked out Eubanks video on his twitter timeline, lord. Not much athleticism from that video but his shot is something special.

That got my hopes up real quick. Certainly a good enough athlete, no doubt. You're right though Seawright - very good looking outside shot. Would love to hear some chatter about this guy - tell Leroy to bring his buddy with him!

Nice player, but I thought Thompson was that guy.
Same size. Thompson is supposed to be a knock down shooter.
Plus, URI has his signed LOI.
I'd like to see staff concentrate on big men from here on.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Why not? There are good bigs in juco, in Europe,
in South America as well as high schools and prep school.
Juco gives you an older, experienced player. The downside is possible bad habits,
or academic problems in some cases.

I would love to see us get 2 big men 6-9 or over with some meat on their bones who can contribute right away...that has to be priority number 1 right now on recruiting front...losing gil will hurt, cannot emphasize enough the importance of a true offensive back to the basket post presence

"At Rhode Island, the Rams are trying to hit their stride in year three under coach Dan Hurley. There were ups and downs the first two seasons, but a talented 2014 recruiting class and the return of NBA prospect E.C. Matthews has people buzzing about Rhode Island.
Some of that buzz finally came to fruition when the Rams took down then-No. 21 Nebraska in overtime in front of a packed arena that rushed the court after the clock hit zero.
With the game televised in New England and New York, it was a chance for area recruits to see Rhode Island's program truly take a step forward.
“Our fans can trust this group,” Hurley said after the game. “Up until the late 90s, this was a national program, championship-caliber, NCAA-caliber -- and we’ve got young players that are going to lead us back to those days at some point in the near future.” " - espn

"At some point in the near future" is a telling quote.
Would like to know if he thinks "the near future" is later this season, or next year, or the year after that.
Even with expected improvement this season, we're not there yet, and it might not be as close as we thought.
