Re: ESPN
Wonder why the announcer thought Powell would get the last shot, when
he had a real problem getting his shot all night?
X just beat everyone down the floor on that shot.

Watching the replay, that was a beautiful cross over that almost dropped the defender.

Re: ESPN
Anyone notice that ESPN didn't show Boeheim calling Andy Katz and idiot and a disloyal person?
Guess Katz repeated something told off the record.

Re: ESPN
Rod, I think Abu mentioned Powell because he thought Powell might catch the in bounds and push the ball up the floor. A lot of times with that much time on the clock, it isn't the guy that catches the inbound pass that shoots the ball. The ball is typically raced up court, the ball handler tries to beat his man and force the defense to help. That might have been what he envisioned when he mentioned Powell catching the in bound pass. The help situation would have happened if X took one more bounce, Andre's man would have helped off of him in the corner.
It seemed that Powell was the second option off that inbounds play. Andre sprinted the length of the floor. Nik screen for X who was moving from right to left. This allowed him to turn and catch and dribble with his strong hand in one motion. If X didn't get it, it looked like the next action was Nik screening for Powell who would have came from left to right. This would have allowed him to catch and go with his strong hand. Malone would have probably spaced to the left corner, again forcing his defender to make a decision to help if Powell beat his man. A simple but effective in bounds play!

Re: ESPN
Great to relive the moment. I love the design of the inbounds play. Watch where X starts off and how he circles towards the baseline so when he receives the pass, he is almost at full speed heading up the court.....coaching!

different game is being shown to us via the internet.
When someone says Powell couldnt get his shot off,
in multiple discussions I'm thinking yeah, we're watching
a different game for sure.
That game was a game of "team" as they all should be.
16 team assist is what that game was about, not Powell
getting shots up. Mike told me days before he wasn't worried
about his points, and they needed wins.
So overall, 10pts on 3-6 shooting, 5ast, 5reb, AND A WIN.
hell, I say job well done guys. To hell with shots being fired.
Oh, did I mention 2 "HUGE" free throws at the end?
I will however, call COX to check the feed just in case.

Re: ESPN
I was there Mr P......You saw correctly. Basically, he played well against an agressive perimeter trap.
No criticizm here. I believe in the coaching he is getting. In my 27 years as a season ticket holder, you have to go back to the Penders/Harrick teams to see the coaching this good...............Keep the faith. Mostly all of us are.

Re: ESPN
Right before the ball was in bounded, Hurley switched Powell and Munford. Don't know if that was a last-minute change or if the two of them had lined up on the wrong sides of the court.

Re: ESPN
I was at the game.
Powell had very few opportunities to get a clear shot.
Fact. If you wish to take offense at that statement, fine.
Munford is the only player on the team who create his own shot. Fact,
backed up by every coach on staff saying the same.
I don't recall saying anywhere that Powell had a bad game.
In fact I said he protected the ball well.
Just awful criticisms, huh?

Re: ESPN
I said he had trouble getting his shot.
Powell scores when the motion of the offense frees him
for a clean look.
Those opporunities weren't there Wednesday.
Powell took what the defense gave him.
What's wrong with that? It's called playing smart.

Re: ESPN
I agree with rod but for a slightly different reason, with his height 99% of players are taller than him which would make it tough for him to get a shot off late bowing heavily guarded. Like mentioned I think they thought Powell might get it to drive and kick

Re: ESPN
I don't care anything at all
About Mike getting his shots.
All that matters is the win . That's
It, that's all .
Each game is different but the goal
In my opinion should be the final
Results, a win.
I'm never offended by any comment
That any of u make, ever. Its all funny to me.
I just want the team to win, the rest will take care
Of itself. I comment because I love the
Game of basketball bro.
But the one thing you will never convince me
of is that Mike can't create either for himself
or a teammate. This game is hard, not impossible.

Re: ESPN
Nice to see Mr. Powell back amongst us. Agreed on the fact that there's no surprise that when Rhody wins a well played game our point guard has a very clean stat line. Well done Mike Jr!

Re: ESPN
Dayton didn't trap MikeP as we have seen other opponents do continuously throughout the game. This is why he had few turnovers.
It was either Coach Carr or X who said in the post-game interview with Steve and Don that the final play was to get the ball to either X or MikeP going up court with a full head of steam.

Re: ESPN
Speaking of ESPN, they did a list of the 75 best NCAA tournament players of all time. Bobby Hurley checks in at #16. Their choice for #1 should make Rod happy.

I thought Walton would be #1. He had the greatest game I've ever seen a college player have. But it's hard to argue with Alcindor/Jabbar.Optimistic wrote:Speaking of ESPN, they did a list of the 75 best NCAA tournament players of all time. Bobby Hurley checks in at #16. Re: ESPN
Walton for a single tournament and final game.
Remeber, UCLA lost to David Thompson in Walton's senior season.
Why not Bill Russell?
Jabbar played on a super loaded team, which could have done well even without him.
I loved it when Elvin Hayes took it to Jababar for 39 points in the Astrodome.
Never a Jabbar fan. He got dominated by an aging Wilt Chamberlain in his prime
in the NBA playoffs.
I was at a game, where Dave Cowens kept pulling Jabbar out and going arouind him.
When Jabbar sagged back, Cowens would hit a long jumper.

That's what I figured. And it looked like Andre was going to kick to the ball side corner. If his defender helped, he would have been available for the kick out.Rhody72 wrote: It was either Coach Carr or X who said in the post-game interview with Steve and Don that the final play was to get the ball to either X or MikeP going up court with a full head of steam.

Not that I'm a Jabbar fan but in that game in the Astrodome Jabbar was playing with a bad eye I believe. I think he got poked in the eye during practice that week & almost didn't play at all. When they met in NCAA tourney UCLA took them apart. I was more of a Lynn Shackelford fan back then. I think they had Steve Patterson as the backup who also played a while in the NBA.

Re: ESPN
Loved seeing the transfers get involved in the pileup with X after Dayton missed their last attempt. Can tell that they definitely feel really part of the team and committed to their success, even though watching from the sidelines must be torture. I think Reischel was the first one to get to X.
