Game #17: George Washington - GameDay!

Unread post by twisted3829 »

URI host Saint Louis (8-9, 2-2) Wednesday night at 7pm
TV: Ocean State Network
Possible Free Video stream: Click Here
Live GameTracker Stats: http://www.gorhody.com/links/ny7k8c
Gamenotes: http://www.gorhody.com/sports/m-baskbl/ ... /17-GW.pdf
Radio: B101 (http://www.iheart.com/live/3217/?autoplay=true)
Line: URI -1

GW comes off a win at UMASS and has wins over St Bonaventure. They are led by Villanova transfer Isiah Armwood (12 ppg, 8.5 rpg), and go 10 players deep. It should be a competitive game that URI has a chance to win.

It is time
1. for our second two game winning streak of the year
2. to have two consecutive good shooting nights.
3. for Nik to stop the bipolar stuff and have another good game
4. for Jordan to continue to assert himself, especially rebounding
5. to support the team and get over 5000 people out to root.
6. for our team not to get into serious foul trouble in the first half

I'll settle for number one! Go Rhody!

Neil,

Would be nice to cross off a few on that list. Hopefully the SLU win opened some people's eyes and they will make it out to the game.

This one won't be easy but GWU seems beatable. They have played some tough teams close - losses to Temple by 2 and Kansas St. by 3. Haven't seen them play but Armwood could give us some trouble inside. Averaging 3 blocks a game to go along with 12 pts and 8 boards.

We could really use a win here giving us momentum to carry into Fordham, before going up against the likes of VCU and Butler.

Here's what passes for a GW poster's assessment of the URI game:
1) @Rhode Island. This is a 50-50 game. Pomeroy gives us a 46% chance of winning. URI has been inconsistent, but have played very well a couple of times this year, including Saturday's huge upset at St. Louis. They jack a TON of threes, and whether they hit them determines a lot for them. However they don't rebound well, and are only fair on defense. I think we should expect a packed-in zone. We are decent at attacking zones from the high post, but if they really pack it down and give us the shot like Xavier did, then we will have to make some shots to loosen the zone.
I hope they expect a "packed-in zone" .... they'd be in for a surprise.

"only fair on defense" says they don't respect our defense very much. Wait 'til we run the old picket fence on them.

Look, if URI athletics want students to go to games, here are the 3 things that they should and probably won't do...

1. WIN! (Will happen, thank god for Hurley)
2. Sell booze at the Ryan Center. (Won't happen, but aren't their NCAA bylaws preventing this from happening? Someone let me know.)
3. Security & Ryan Center staff. (Won't happen. I mean seriously some games back in the day when we had bigger crowds I felt all these chuckleheads did is act as librarians. Students don't need a babysitter at the game, they want to go wild and have a great time. This kind of ties in with the whole idea that the Ryan Center is too sterile and the Mob is lame.)

you are allowed to sell booze at games just not NCAA sponsored tournaments (NCAA and NIT), and I agree on your third point the Ryan Center staff doesn't like a rowdy crowds

My guess is, Dan will have a sit down with the higher ups after this season, and likely suggest that the students be allowed to...er "express" themselves a little more. Also, hopefully, he'll ask that the student sections be moved to better take advantage of the home court.

Maybe part of the reason some of us complain about "no home cooking" concerning the calls at the Ryan, maybe it's because the place is as quiet as a church too often. Get the folks riled up, make some noise, and intimidate the refs!

Does anybody think Cameron Indoor ISN'T a huge advantage for Duke? I mean, the Ryan Center will never approach that level of craziness, but they've got to at least try.

Every game is a new page and new variables come into play. Was the terrific shooting seen in the SLU game an aberration or was it an improved descriptive of this team moving forward? Most important is how does URI match up against GW? We know that GW has a deep bench, rotating regularly 9 players, 7 of whom get major minutes. They will try to wear down the Rams. The Colonials also show balanced scoring. They are not a prolific 3 point shooting team. GW is a good sized team - Xavier big. For URI to succeed we need to contain Isaiah Armwood and Kevin Larsen who most surely will push Hare around. GW will try to dominate our smaller front court to get lots of scoring in the paint. URI cannot afford a rebounding effort like the St. Mary's or Charlotte games or we will get killed with put backs.

The Rams have the home court advantage, but that same advantage did UMass no good, neither did the big Mullins crowd. Key to the game will be the Rhody defense - if it's on, the Rams will prevail.

Any word on Aaman? If he can't give us minutes against their front line we could be in trouble with rebounding and foul trouble on our big guys.

IMHO, the place is "quiet as a church" because the asinine "game presentation" cacophony beats any organic crowd noise into submission.

Garino for GW looks like a Freshmen who will a key player for them over the next 3+ years.

Munford is an absolute beast. Such a pure scorer, he can put the ball in the hoop from anywhere on the court.

Malone has a real nice stroke from 12-16 feet, I don't know why he doesn't go to it more often. He lacks that aggression on offense, to look for his shot. He usually has a weaker defender on him. He is a wild card.

Looks like Hare has been silent. Need a good half from him if we want to contain their bigs.

Its not great. There were just a couple questionable calls back to back. In my opinion they have been calling it pretty tight both ways, but the last 2-3 calls did not go in our favor.

Media timeout at 6:23, and the score is tied once again:

URI 56, GW 56

X with four fouls is on the bench, but Malone is heating up offensively.
