Week #15 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

As Week #15 begins, URI strengthens its ranking in the national polls as the Rams move up to the #16 position in the AP Top 25 Poll poll and #14 in the USA Today Coaches Poll . Despite the loss to Virginia Tech, Virginia gained the #1 in the AP Top 25 poll, but got only the #3 spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Nevada overcame their loss to UNLV by falling only one position to #24 in both polls. Also getting other votes in AP poll are Alabama with 22 votes and St. Bona with 3 votes. In the USA Today Coaches Poll , Michigan State gets the #1 spot. In the other votes category, Alabama gets 6 votes and Seton Hall gets 3 votes.

The cumulative won-lost records of URI OOC opponents now stands at 187-92, 0.670, a small decrease over the previous week.
The key ratings for URI at the start of Week #15 are:

RPI - 5, up one. The expected RPI is 9.
BPI - 24, up 3.
Sagarin - 34, down 2.
Pomeroy - 30 up 1.

No Monday games in the A-10.

Only one game involving URI OOC opponents:

Iona at Siena. 7 PM. On ESPN3.

In Top 25 action:

Notre Dame at #14 North Carolina 7 PM. On ESPN.

TCU at #20 West Virginia. 9 PM. On ESPN2.

Another bad loss for Iona as the Gaels fall in OT to lowly Siena, 82-78. Other than favorable seeding in MAAC tourney, this result actually does not change much as Iona's only path to NCAAT is to win the MAAC tournament.

Of note: St Louis' Jordan Goodwin was suspended for 2 months today following an investigation into a sexual assault. Other 3 players are out entirely it appears.

This is all super slimy and it seems crazy unethical to have goodwin play until now while the others were suspended for doing the same things he did.

according to the article, the head coaches are good friends and wanted to do it. Or at least that's the impression that I got. Not sure why it was mid season though.

Possibly it was Creighton's scheduled "bye" and the coaches wanted to keep their guys going. Playing Bemedji State is the basketball equivalent of a bullpen day for a starting pitcher in baseball. It actually isn't the worst idea I've ever heard of.

#23 Oklahoma at #7 Texas Tech 7 PM. On ESPN.

I watched some of this game. TT looks scary good. Big and athletic, and never saw anyone take a bad shot. People like to sh!t on Oklahoma, but the game was close until the final minutes.

If I had to pick one conference that I wouldn't want to see a team from in the tournament, it would be Big 12. And Virginia.

I honestly think we match up well with UVA. Would love to be in their bracket.

We played them without EC or Cyril the night after we had our starters playing hard for 30+ to beat a very good seton hall team.

They had a cakewalk game against a bad Vanderbilt team where they took their starters out with 8 to go.

We missed easy layups and free throws because of tired legs.

Fully healthy with our complete rotation, not in a back to back? Love our chances.

yeah, I actually take back my Virginia comment, no so much for what you said (though I agree in part), but more because I am sure DH and team would thrive in getting another crack at them.

Remote is working overtime tonight.

I'll be flipping between the PC game, Dayton/VCU, and Michigan (the wife is a Mich alum) at 7. With occasional loop into Duke/Virginia. Will a PC win turn our win over them back into a Q1 win? I think we need both PC and Seton Hall to win to help us. Though in many ways we control our own destiny. Regardless of what these two teams do, I think we need to win out to get a 3 or 4 seed. Hope I'm wrong.

At 9, I'll def tune into SH/X (with the occasional flip to Olympics) and if I can make it that far at least some of Nevada/Boise State.

Nevada at Boise is a huge game. Nevada comes in clinging to a half game lead in the Mountain West - Nevada is up one in the loss column and Boise has a game in hand. A win tonight would give them a functional tie with Nevada in the league (Nevada won the previous matchup on their home court).

If I were younger and had fewer infants and toddlers (who are up all night and wake up before the sun comes out, respectively), I would stay up to watch this thing even with an 11PM tip.

With that win, they need to beat either GTown or Butler on the road and beat both Johnnies and Hall at home to get near 30 entering BET.

Can’t stumble one bit, but win over snobs means they don’t need 2 road wins anymore. I am assuming they lose at X.

Rhody is “down to” 5 again after dipping toe into #4 spot.

Seton Hall has too many good, experienced players to be playing this poorly. Their defense has been awful, and there’s been too many annoying off-court problems.

How nervous should we be of Willard getting fired if they miss out on the tourney? IMO Dan would jump for that job in a second and you would think that Seton Hall's first choice would be Dan.

I don't think missing the tournament this year would get Willard fired. Firing a coach coming off back to back tourney appearances because he missed the tournament once would not be a good look when trying to hire a new coach.

yup, 0.0% worried.

SH is still on the right side of the bubble, losing to a top 5 team on the road doesnt hurt them at all, it was just a missed opportunity to solidify a spot. they just need to avoid the landmines.

In a close game throughout, Nevada beat Boise State, 77-72, and this important road win will help the Wolfpack to retain their Top 25 ranking. Also, Nevada solidifies its hold on first place in the Mountain West and it looks like no matter what the outcome of the MW tournament, Nevada will be in the NCAAT.

I don’t think he’ll be fired. My understanding is that he has a very good relationship with the AD. I have no idea if he would be interested in pursuing another opportunity and moving on from Seton Hall on his own. I do know that, as someone who casually follows the Pirates, this season has been frustrating... very much a missed opportunity (so far) kind of feeling.
