Five years ago today, after a 67-61 loss to Saint Bonaventure at home, falling to 6-16 on the season. Xavier Munford went 3-11 from the field and scored 18 points to lead the Rams. Oh how far we've come. The time is NOW. TRUST THE PROCESS

My wife was watching the channel 10 news early this morning and they were in Kingston covering the kids waiting in line for bracelets. Even the local media is becoming interested. Anyway, the kids in the front of the line got there at 1 AM and the line started growing at 4AM. This is so exciting. What an atmosphere it's going to be tonight! Wow, have things changed. Thank you, Dan!!!

Expanding on TP's mention of the advanced metrics - there are more than a few that make me feel more confident about tonight.

While URI historically fouls teams a lot, Davidson just isn't that aggressive of a team on offense so they hardly draw any fouls so URI should stay out of foul trouble.

As mentioned before, Davidson is fairly one dimensional with almost 45% of their total points coming via the 3-ball. That's not surprising given 50% of their shots are 3-point shots. (Tying back to my first point - only 12% of their total points come from the FT line.) URI's 3pt defense is in the top 15% of D1 this season holding teams to an effective 3pt% of 32%.

Rebounding: Davidson is 308 out of 351 D1 teams in offensive rebounding percentage and URI is 91 in preventing other teams' from grabbing offensive rebounds. I see a lot of one and done trips for Davidson. They would need to really get hot to beat URI (which gets me to my last point).

All but 1 of Davidson's losses came against teams playing solely man defense. When looking at those games, Davidson averages 17 points fewer per 100 possessions when compared to their season average of 116.6. A lot of those teams aren't even remotely close to URI's defensive efficiency too. I find it very, very remote that Davidson gets hot and stays hot the entire game.

TruePoint wrote:I alluded to this in the preview, but it is interesting to me that the RPI likes Rhody so much compared to the more advanced metrics like kenpom and BPI, where those metrics like Davidson much better than RPI does. URI is obviously still rated better than Davidson in the advanced metrics, but not by nearly as much.

The important thing for URI is not the "interestingness" of that discrepancy, but rather the opportunity presented. While playing Davidson will not help URI's RPI considerably, we can't go much higher there anyways. But because the other systems regard Davidson so highly, there is an opportunity for URI to boost its standing with them tomorrow night. Unfortunately it isn't as simple as just winning the game like it is with RPI, but rather how efficient we are on both ends of the floor. Still, a good showing could improve our position in those metrics which will put a ceiling on our seeding potential as they stand currently.
Its because KenPom (etc) doesn't take blowouts and such into account. Its just efficiency.

Take UMass at home for example. The game was essentially over by the U12 timeout in the first half. Watching the game you are able to see the difference in effort from both teams after that point. Everything just moves a little slower, becomes a little sloppier becasue both teams were effectively going through the motions.

KenPom has no idea about that and thus URI looks less efficient even though they dominated. It goes the other way too, when a team runs up the score in a game effectively over it makes them look better than they are. Its a major flaw in efficiency metrics.

Surf - completely agree with you on these metrics. That is a major flaw with them. Someone else pointed out all the blowouts Davidson has won, and that definitely shows up in their metrics. I wasn't necessarily trying to do a deep dive into what was driving the differences between RPI and kenpom/BPI with respect to URI and Davidson, just pointing the differences out. But your point is correct. These systems measure different things and give you different information about teams. I understand the appeal of efficiency ratings, but I do think you've hit on a key flaw with them and I've felt the same way as you do about them for a while.

Yea doesn't account for the best teams using the on/off switch.

I expect the players to come out very excited in anticipation of the crowd.

Interesting/special to think the players have an ownership feeling that they built a program from nothing to something. Hurley kind of instills that by reinforcing the narrative that he took the program from the depths to the heights. Which is true.

IMHO back in 07-09 I don't think the players would play in front of a sell out and think they built the following and the program. I think they/fans all just thought/knew that every few years Rhody gets hot and people show up. There wasn't the branding internally from the coach that they were world beaters creating this aura. There was just a coach in over his head with a very talented team scoring a lot of points. DH goes to extraordinary lengths to seize the narrative and create an identity for them. Or culture as they liked to say every interview for the first 4 years.

The difference is night and day in terms of confidence and the grit/finishing we see from this current team.

Certainly true that Hurley and these players have taken the team from the depths
I remember when Baron decided to put in the running strategy. It was just grab the ball and run. Don't know how many times I saw players just give the breakaway layups and give the 3 point shots with little defense.Saying the program is night and day is true and it is night and day in virtually all areas.

Rhody is 5-3 in high leverage games with losses being vs Virginia, at Nevada, at Alabama.

Not to knock the student support and buzz that is going around- because I think it is tremendous.......I graduated in 2006 and have a. either gone to every game since, b. watched on TV, or at the very least c. listened to every game on B101. Asses in seats at the Ryan has been mediocre for a long time. We need more dedicated, long term fans. The fact we could barely get 1,000 students to go to games is pathetic considering the amount of students that live on campus or commute from a short distance. LET"S GO!

In today's edition of The Charlotte Observer, there is an article by David Scott regarding the Davidson M-BB team:

sports article from The Charlotte Observer

Here is a quote from the article
Although the zone has been effective for Davidson, it’s not been something coach Bob McKillop has used consistently in his 29 seasons at Davidson. But with a group of players who are committed to making it work, as well as having the physical attributes to bother opposing shooters, the Wildcats have shown an ability to win games offensively and defensively.

Not a complete hot take here, but the best measurement of how far this program has come might be how the students were in line at 6am for a game against a non-PC opponent. I remember years ago as a student when the first rumblings of having to wait in line before the PC game just to get in were surfacing. To think that has now translated into waiting in line at 6am (or earlier) with news cameras there and a Dunkin Donuts tent for a game against Davidson (who may be #2 in A10 but is not ranked not close to it). Let's THINK and bask in that glory for a moment.

My goodness, this school always had the potential to be what those on this blog envisioned, and to me this no where close to the ceiling.

Let's extend the Wildcat win streak to four. Every time URI has scored 70 or more versus Davidson, it has won.

Rhode Island versus Davidson
Series: 5-3

3/7/1966 | 65-96 | L | N (NCAA)
11/28/2009 | 75-65 | W | A
11/27/2010 | 71-58 | W | H
2/25/2015 | 59-60 | L | H
2/23/2016 | 54-65 | L | A
2/3/2017 | 70-59 | W | A
3/4/2017 | 73-70 | W | H

Mews Tavern (variety of food, 60+ beers on tap) in Wakefield, or head down Rt 1 into Narragansett for seafood (Champlins or Georges), or pop over the bridges to Newport

Take a drive down Rte 1a by the Narragansett Pier area and down to Pt Judith and then to the fishing port of Galilee where the ferries for Block Island also depart. Very scenic drive through the main beach area of the state.

If you like seafood, plenty of options - Matunuck Oyster Bar, 2-10 Oyster, George's, Coast Guard House. If you want bar scene road house atmosphere - the Mews (69 beers on tap) or Rhody Joe's in Wakefield. The URI campus is in a rural area by the historic village of Kingston. There are few eating and drinking options close to campus.

The Mews is always good for pizza/burgers/beer. It's obviously not great weather wise, but you could do Matunuck Oyster Bar if you're looking for seafood on the water. Ocean Mist is also a great spot to drink on the water. All of those are 15-20 minutes from the Ryan Center.

Maybe i'm sorta biased but i never cared much for the food options in Southern Rhode Island. I don't care for Seafood and the few big restaurants you have are very expensive/crowded for what your getting in my opinion.

I would consider just traveling another 15 minutes north and looking for something around that Kent County Area. You'll find a million restaurants of every kind right off the exits starting from about exit 7-8 on i95 to providence.

I personally really like The Shanty in Warwick on Post Road and would rate it the best in Rhode Island imo. The French place in East Greenwich is really good too but i can never remember it's name! but there's really just about any option you could imagine we have far too many restaurants in central-northern Rhode Island!

Hope you enjoy your stay up here.

A couple of Keaney"s teams started the season at 20-2, but I think this would be the best start in about 75 years.

I love Stan guarding Aldridge when he's out on the perimeter. What about when Aldridge posts up? He's got great moves down low. Hopefully this doesn't lead to foul trouble. I would say give him help, but we don't want to leave their shooters open either. What's the best way to defend him?

I think they let Langevine/Akele/Berry stay on that island with him whether he's out on the perimeter or down low. Even if he's a bit too much for them, he can't beat URI on his own. Hurley needs the guards really make the rest of that finesse team feel uncomfortable and off rhythm all night. They don't like physicality.

Front him with Stan. Then when Stan is not on the court (almost never), run Akele and others at him.

Now that I look at Davidson's roster and playing time, I see Aldridge plays a ton of time alongside Magarity. So I change my mind as Berry/Langevine definitely cover Magarity. I didn't realize how much time they spend on the court at the same time (46.3% of the game).

I think Davidson will be the toughest matchup of the conference season for URI. In my opinion, they are the second best team in the A-10, and they have the size at the guard position to matchup with Matthews and Terrell. Aldridge is a unique matchup in Davidson's favor, and capable of going off tonight.

I still expect URI to win, but I honestly think Davidson is the only team talented enough to beat URI without Rhody just having a bad game.

Michelson 6'9" will likely start and McGarity 6'11" will share time with Michelson. Berry/Langevine also split time rarely in the game together. They will handle the Michelson/McGarity tandem

Stan is our Forward by default in going with the 4 guard line up. Stan has handled himself very well when he has had to handle 6'8" and 6'9" guys to this point, And on the other hand they have to handle Stan which has often worked to our favor.

Maybe i'm sorta biased but i never cared much for the food options in Southern Rhode Island. I don't care for Seafood...

You do realize that we live in the Ocean State. People come from all over the world to enjoy our fresh local seafood. Just sayin'.. :)

And Coach Hurley is absolutely a man of his word. He promised during his first season here -- an absolute nightmare 5 years ago -- that better times were coming. :D

And Bob Sr. called the URI program a 'sleeping giant'. Hopefully this is only the beginning.
