At large bids
At large bids
For me the best seasons end with us getting an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament......
Would have asked Rod.....but now Neil may be our most tenured poster......but how many times and under which coaches did we get at-large bids ?

In the sixties you had to win the yankee conference. Calverley had 2 ncaa appearances, both yc winners. There were many at larges, with temple and Xavier winning the conference. Silk’s team lost three times to the owls but were certainly deserving of going to the dance. Wishing rod was here to clean this up.

We've been to the NCAA tournament 9 times. Twice under Calverly (61 and 66), once under Jack Kraft (78), once under Tom Penders (88), twice under Al Skinner (93, 97), twice under Jim Harrick.(98, 99), and once (so far) under Dan Hurley.

Only four at large bids ever in nine NCAA appearances. Would have gotten an at large last year had they lost the A-10 Tourney Final. Likely no other at large bids had they not gotten the automatic bid. Keep in mind the NCAA Tournament field was much smaller for a very long time. Many at large bids are a more recent occurrence of the last four decades.
The NCAA tournament has expanded a number of times throughout its history. This is a breakdown of the history of the tournament formats:
1939–1950: 8 teams
1951–1952: 16 teams
1953–1974: varied between 22 and 25 teams
1975–1978: 32 teams
1979: 40 teams
1980–1982: 48 teams
1983: 52 teams (four play-in games before the tournament)
1984: 53 teams (five play-in games before the tournament)
1985–2000: 64 teams
2001–2010: 65 teams (one play-in game to determine whether the 64th or 65th team plays in the first round)
2011–present: 68 teams (four play-in games before all remaining teams compete in the round of 64; from 2011 to 2015, the round of 64 was deemed to be the second round; beginning in 2016, the round of 64 is again deemed to be the first round)

The 90's were a particularly strong era for the A-10. UMass and Temple were typically nationally ranked. Xavier then joined the league in 1995.

Re: At large bids
Do we get to the Elite Eight with Al as head coach? If we don't make that run do we have the Ryan Center?
