Week # 10 - Games of Interest

As Week #10 begins, URI again is the only A-10 school garnering any votes in the national polls. The Rams now get seven votes in the AP and six votes in the USA Today polls. Virginia moves up to #3 in both polls. Seton Hall moves up to #13 ranking in the AP poll and # 15 in the US Today poll. Nevada gets 2 votes in the AP poll and eight votes in the coaches' poll.

Villanova replaces Michigan State as #1 leader in both polls.

The cumulative won-lost records of URI OOC opponents now stands at 111-63, .638 slightly down from the previous week.

The key ratings for URI at the start of Week #10 are:

RPI - 20, up three. The expected RPI is 24.
BPI - 39, up five.
Sagarin - 39, up four.
Pomeroy - 39, up eight.

A-10 Conference RPI positioning remains at #10.

Only action On Monday is Holy Cross hosting Loyola (MD). 7 PM. The Crusaders have lost five straight and have yet to win a Patriot League game. Question is whether the home court advantage will give HC a much needed boost to beat a just average Loyola team?

In last night action, Holy Cross came back from a small half time deficit to snap a five game losing streak as the Crusaders beat Loyola (MD), 63-57. Among all URI opponents, Holy Cross has the worst RPI at 338.

Ugh can't believe we have to go out there for the back half of a home and home next season. HC is as good at basketball this year as Worcester is at being a city.

Is VCU-Duquesne on TV?

Duquesne put up a good effort, but could not realize a really good road win as the Dukes fell to VCU, 78-67. Duquesne led the entire first half by margins as large as 13 points and they maintained the lead in the second half, but VCU began to chip away and by the 10 minute mark, the Southern Rams had their first lead of the game, a lead they would not relinquish. URI now stands alone at the top of the A-10 standings.

Duquesne has 4 games prior to visiting Kingston.
LaSalle
@ Saint Louis
George Mason
Richmond.

Is it possible that Duquesne comes to the Ryan Center with a 7-1 record January 27? 3 home games upcoming with all 4 games prior to URI very winnable.

My two concerns in the A10 are Umass and St. Joes. Umass will be a tough matchup with their size in the paint and that small guard who lights it up. Phill Martelli is a great coach and will have a good game plan to beat us..... some solid talent and length. Those 2 games in my opinion will be are biggest challenge.

I disagree, at VCU and at St Bonnies are the 2 toughest. Both tough places to play that will be packed and loud

St. John’s drops to 0-5 in conference, losing the last 2 to DePaul and Georgetown. I wonder if the president is still comfortable with his Mullin over Dan choice. Probably, but he is in year 3, the season you hope to see a few more signs of life. Plenty of season left to recover.

Yes, not good for St Johns since Georgetown and DePaul were picked to finish 9th and 10th respectively with St John's picked 6th preseason.
Tough loss for Seton Hall last night vs Marquette

2017-18 Preseason Coaches’ Poll
1. Villanova (8) 80
2. Seton Hall (1) 71
3. Xavier (1) 63
4. Providence 59
5. Creighton 48
6. St. John’s 36
7. Marquette 34
8. Butler 32
9. Georgetown 15
10. DePaul 12

Long Shot Prediction: If Iona wins the MAAC TIM ClUEESS takes over as headcoach at Saint Johns.

I's not like they have much to lose by giving it a try and I thin it's very possible the CLuess system actually does better vs tougher teams then weaker ones.

LaSalle blew a 21 point lead and lost to UMass in OT 86-79. Pipkins set a new Mullins scoring record with 44. Explorers are one bi-polar team. Very streaky.

St Joe's trailed nearly all game at George Mason before going ahead by one with seconds left. Patriots hit a three to win 81-79 as time expired.

Fordham played SBU nearly even in the first half before running out of steam in Olean losing 77-61.

Davidson cruised at home from the tip beating GW 72-45.

I’m confused. What does “key win” mean?

He had Davidson’s key win as George Mason.

That makes him sound dumb. Maybe like he should keep to chess write ups or something.

Very much underrate SBU. GMU is way overrated. SLU should be ranked higher.

In this evening's results:

Charleston righted its CAA campaign by emphatically defeating Northeastern, 82-66.

Iona barely escaped a devastating home court loss to woeful Siena by coming from 12 points down in the second half to edge the Saints, 71-69.

Florida Gulf Coast easily defeated South Carolina Upstate, 75-58, to bring their A-Sun record to 2-0.

Great effort by Holy Cross, but the Crusaders fell short in OT at Navy, 61-56.

Crazy finish Clemson @ NC State
With .2 seconds to go NC State fouls Devoe on a 3 pointer from the corner (imagine if it had gone in?)
Devoe calmly hit the 1st 2 FTs. NC State HC called time out then he was waving his hand fanatically to get the crowd to make a ton of noise and the poor kid Missed the 3rd FT so game over.

ALSO
with 25 seconds to go NC State threw the ball in from under the basket with a bounce pass. Problem being the bounce pass clearly bounced out of bounds before it came in bounds. A clear violation - Clemson players and Coach were furious but Refs got together and did not change the call - it was said that this is a dead ball infraction and is not therefore subject to the last 2 minutes replay - unfortunate break for Clemson on that. So Clemson drops from the Top 25 after having only recently entered.

Only one game in Friday evening action in the A-10, but it is always an interesting match-up when VCU plays at Dayton. 7 PM. On ESPN2.

Games involving URI OOC opponents:

Brown opens its Ivy campaign in a game at Yale. 7 PM.

UNC Asheville at Presbyterian. 7 PM.

PC at De Paul. 8:30 PM. On FS1

The Brown/Yale game is not the most high profile game ever, but I'm kind of curious to see that game. Yale is favored by 7.5 and rpiforecast likes them by even more than that, but I'm not totally convinced. I thought when I have seen Brown that they've showed some signs of life. I am cautiously optimistic about Brown being an upper-half Ivy team this year (not that it makes a huge difference for URI).

Just a note on tonights game:

"When DePaul hosts Providence in a Big East men’s basketball game next month, cable’s Fox Sports 1 plans to carry the game with limited commercial interruption and both head coaches wearing microphones, Fox Sports announced Thursday.

The only two breaks during the Jan. 12 telecast will be at the start and end of halftime, according to Fox Sports, which said wiring up the Blue Demons’ Dave Leitao and the Friars’ Ed Cooley will enable viewers to eavesdrop on what the coaches say in huddles, on the sideline and in their locker rooms from tipoff to the final whistle.

In addition to the FS1 feed, FoxSportsGo.com and the Fox Sports Go mobile app will offer additional live streams dedicated to each coach’s video and audio for the entire game so fans can customize their viewing experience."

Apparently this game will now be at 5:30 PM tonight and broadcast on the "Eleven Sports Network" (Fios ch. 597) (DirectTV ch. 623)

Questionable network branding insomuchas neither of those channel numbers are 11. Or really even close.
