Week #8 - Games of Interest

Christmas Day began Week #8 of the CBB season. URI gets votes in both the AP and the USA Today polls - 2 votes in the AP poll and 3 votes in the USA Today poll. URI is now joined by St. Bonaventure as the only two A-10 teams garnering votes, and the Bonnies got more votes, 5 in the AP poll and 2 in the USA Today Poll. Seton Hall retains the #23 ranking in the AP poll and # 24 in the US Today poll. Virginia moved up to #9 in both polls. With the loss to San Francisco, Nevada gets only 1 vote in the AP poll and no votes in the coaches' poll.

Villanova retains the #1 spot in both polls. Arizona State gets the #3 position in the AP poll and #4 in the USA Today poll.

The cumulative won-lost records of URI OOC opponents now stands at 88-49, .642 slightly down from the previous week.

Still early for serious concern on these metrics, but the key ratings for URI at the start of Week #8 are:

RPI - 17, up four. The expected RPI is 32.
BPI - 50, down four
Sagarin - 45, down one.
Pomeroy - 51, stable.

A-10 Conference RPI remains at #10. Our next opponent, FGCU, has current RPI of 208 with an expected RPI of #168 and the Atlantic Sun RPI checks in at #24.

There was an A-10 team in action on Christmas Day, as Davidson beat Akron, 91-78 to snag 7th place in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. Davidson came out fast in the second half and for the game hit on 13 three pointers. The Wildcats were led by freshman Kellan Grady in put in 30 points including five 3-pointers.

There are no CBB games scheduled Tuesday.

If my quick look was right, our game tonight is the only A10 game between now and when everyone starts league play Saturday. The only other non conference game left for an A10 school is St. Joe's taking on Penn 1/27.

Aided by good shooting and double digit scoring from all five starters, Nevada was in command all the way as the Wolfpack beat Fresno State, 80-65, to snare their Mountain West opener. The Martin twins combined for a 28 point contribution.

I wrote the above 6 days ago. He missed one game (against Manhattan) and is back tonight. Conference play makes coaches very forgiving.

Creighton-Seton Hall is a good one so far.

This Creighton-Seton Hall game is kinda bonkers. Really high scoring, and a nice comeback by Seton Hall. I kind of love Delgado. Fun game for sure.

Good results for Rhody......Seton Hall wins....boosts our win over them

the friars win....beat one of our competitors for an at large...and boost our win over the friars....

I am rooting for the friars except when they play Villanova, Xavier, and Seton Hall.....those three are locks.....the others can lose for my tastes....

Hall Creighton was crazy.
Creighton led most of the way but there wasn't much defense, so the hall stiffened up and took it in the end.

I guess PC is okay now. Blew out St Johns.

Oklahoma State is playing number seven WV at home and the place looks only half full on TV. First Big 12 game is the year vs number 7 in the country and they can only fill 50%-60% of their Arena? And we thought we had problems.

13,611 capacity
8,257 actual attendance for WVU
60.6%

But consider this is in Stillwater Oklahoma and students are off

Stillwater has a population about half the Size of Warwick, and nothing much around it

In last night's action, Iona won an important road game against one of the better teams in the Metro Atlantic as the Gaels beat Niagara in OT, 98-93.

Holy Cross put up a good fight on its home court against one better teams in the Patriot, but the Crusaders lost to Colgate, 79-74. It looks like HC is destined for a losing season.

We might get an idea of what kind of a factor UMass is going to be this year. This is the most interesting A10cgame today, imo.

Nice start for our OOC opponents. In their respective conferences they are a combined 9-1. Nevada is 2-0. FGCU and Brown haven't played a conference game yet. And Holy Cross has the only loss.

In OOC results not previously mentioned:

In a battle of the two top teams in the CAA, Charleston came out the winner over Towson, 73-62. Towson will soon get the home court advantage in a replay in another week.

UNC Asheville won their Big South opener over Campbell, 85-79.

In a surprising tough tussle on their home court, Nevada held off New Mexico, 77-74, fueled by Caleb Martin's 24 points, six of which came on Nevada's last three possessions. Nevada recorded its second MW win keeping pace with Boise State.

First results of day:

Iona suffers a bad loss as they fall to Canisius, 85-78. The Gaels dug themselves into big hole in the first half and couldn't recover.

FGCU over Florida Tech, 62-54.

PC struggling in the first half at Creighton.

If me, Billyboy, Rhode Island Red, Romulous, etc etc change our minds about PC and we root for them like you and others want us to, then does that mean that PC beats Creighton? or makes the game closer?

I mean that is the argument, isn't it?

If we root for PC, and not against them, then they will have a better chance of winning and then if they win that will help our RPI

I don't get why everyone has to root for PC or they are idiots and not truly patriotic to the Rhody Rams.

And while we are at converting us to rooting for PC let's get the PC long time URI anti-fans like DarthFriar to start rooting for URI and then that will help URI win games and get URI's RPI up and that will help PC too. Win-Win.

The reason the URI-PC Rivalry is so intense because many fans of each school are so loyal to their own school and so disloyal to the other. Hatfields and McKoys, Red Sox and Yankees.................

I just Can't drink that Kool-Aid

I was thrilled that Creighton destroyed PC yesterday. And added to the pleasure was that we beat the same Big East Creighton team in Sacramento just 9 months ago :-)

Creighton will be in the tournament no matter....so will Villanova, Xavier, and Seton Hall.....so I root against the friars in those games...

I root for the friars playing Marquette, St John's, Georgetown, Butler....we are competing with them for at large bids....

As for Depaul I hope for tie games....

I admit I was around, but not in RI back then. But the total obsession with PC in some of our fans is difficult to understand. We’re better than them this year. Revel in that, and wish them good luck the rest of the way

I think there is a pretty big obsession with some people with the people who are AGAINST PC. Right here for example it was brought up with nothing said by any of the posters who like to see PC lose every game. Was simple stirring the pot. That's the obsession I don't understand. I don't begrudge anyone for rooting for PC to make URI's RPI look better.

But to act like others should follow suit is absurd. In no way, shape or form would it help PC win or score more points or play better defense or recruit better players if Billyboy, myself, or others miraculously changed and started rooting for the Friars. I know that is painfully obvious and stupid to say but that is the way it feels around here sometimes

Just relax and enjoy the URI Rams rolling along. We will make the NCAA Tournament even if PC loses every game left on their schedule. Win the league, win the A10 Tournament, win in the NCAA Tournament.....we got this. There is a reason URI is the #1 ranked team in New England for the 2nd consecutive year.
