Week #7 - Games of Interest
Week #7 - Games of Interest
At the start of Week #7, URI gets votes in both the AP and the USA Today polls, - 2 votes in the AP poll and 6 votes in the USA Today poll. URI continues to be the only A-10 team getting votes. With its loss to Rutgers, Seton Hall falls to a #23 ranking in the AP poll and # 22 in the US Today poll. Virginia is #13 and #14 respectively. Nevada gets 13 votes in the AP poll and no votes in the coaches' poll. Alabama got 5 votes in the AP poll and 1 vote in the USA Today poll.
Villanova retains the #1 spot in both polls. Arizona State is now at #3 in the AP poll and is tied with North Carolina for #4 in the USA Today poll.
The cumulative won-lost records of URI OOC opponents now stands at 75-40, .652, down from the previous week. Holy Cross remains as the only OOC opponent with a losing record.
Still early to take these metrics seriously, but here are key ratings for URI as of the beginning of Week #7:
RPI - 21, up two.
BPI - 46, down two.
Sagarin - 44, down six.
Pomeroy - 51, down three.
A-10 Conference RPI now at #10. Our next opponent, Iona, has RPI of #118 and Metro Atlantic Conference stands at #23.
No action on Monday in the A-10 or among URI OOC opponents.

Re: Week #7 - Games of Interest
For URI to advance its record and move up in the polls, this team has got to get better shooting than what we have seen in recent games. The big and exciting win over PC masked the poor shooting in the second half of that game that contributed to the loss of the 13 point lead. This pattern continued with the Alabama game and we got more of the same with Charleston. Coupled with the erratic FT shooting - up and down from game to game - overall FG shooting is down with the three point shooting being particularly bad for the last five halves. Can URI get back to the shooting performances they showed earlier?

Going from 3 games in 18 days, to 3 games in 10 days...would think that will help the shooting?

Re: Week #7 - Games of Interest
You're making excuses. Here is a reply I was going to make in another thread.
We should not be making excuses like this "they've played just two games in the 17 days prior to this one" . This statement may be factual true but the implication is false because the Alabama game on 12/6, followed games on 11/28 and 12/2. How more active can a team get than 3 games in eight days?? More sensible is to say we had a ten layoff before Charleston. Only the Charleston game was impacted by a stretch of inactivity.

Great point Ramster if anybody ever predicted Bobby would have ASU 3rd ranked overall you would think they would be on some serious drugs

Actually there were posters on this board that had inferred the Hurleys only got the opportunities they got because of their last name, seems that couldn't be further from the truth.

VCU won with Justin Tillman getting another double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Tillman and Josh Cunningham of Dayton off to solid years in the A10.

Re: Week #7 - Games of Interest
Iona defeated Holy Cross, 82-68, in a wild one. The game was only close in the early going as Iona steadily built a large lead helped by a barrage of three points -20 made on 37 attempts. Iona made only seven baskets inside the arc. Iona has now won five of their last six games as the Gaels move their record above .500 to 6-5.
Thursday night it will be interesting to see how the duel between Iona's three point shooting and URI's perimeter defense works out!!

Yep, we will need to defend the 3 point line very well. 54% on 20-37 is tough for any team to overcome.

Charleston in a nice win over South Carolina State, 80-64. Grant Riller had a massive night for the Cougars putting up a career high 31 points including 4-6 on treys. Charleston never trailed in the game.

Being ranked that high is crazy and, given how much University of Arizona fans hate him, I am loving every minute of it. The current team doesn’t care too much about defense, but they might just get away with that in a weaker conference this year.ramster wrote:Amazing that Bobby Hurley has ASU 10-0 and 3rd ranked.

Bobby had a couple things going for him when he took the job. First, he inherited some very good players, most notably Tra Holder and Kodi Justice who are 1st (22/game) and 4th (13/game) in scoring on this year’s team. It reminds me a little of Cooley’s situation when he had the benefit of already having Cotton, Council, and Batts on the team and having their contributions for two to three years. Second, he had no qualms about taking his Buffalo guys with him. Graham was big for them last year, and Evans has been consistently great. O’Field came, too, but he didn’t work out. Not sure that’s left him with too many fans in Buffalo, but dude’s a savage. He doesn’t care.

Probably not many fans of either, or interest here, but....Furman giving Tennessee all they can handle..1 point game with 7 mins to play...
(Would be no interest for me either, but a co-worker's kid plays for Furman...+ who doesn't like to see a big upset?)

Not really. As long as PC stays in top 75, it’s fine. And out of the entire OOC, only Brown and Holy Cross fall under the “all but meaningless category.” Big picture? They’re good.Rhodymob05 wrote:Love seeing PC lose but we now have one good win.

the Wofford free throw shoot had 100% rate on the season... would of been better to eat the time and play defense then let him shoot
This is why you play the games!
PS: others have said it, but losing to URI broke PC. hopefully they get it together for Big East Play

Stats that jump out to me in this loss are Zero Blocked Shots and only 4 steals. Plus watching PC just not displaying overall tenacity or energy on the defensive endreef wrote:Say goodnight to the Providence College Friars !!
For all the hype in the Projo, on the PC board and from CB Anaysts about ESPN Top 100 ranked Makai Ashton-Langford, his shooting performance to date has surprised me. Of course it’s early in his career but he is going to have Teams daring him to shoot.
Ashton-Langford is:
19-41 FTs for 46%
2-11 on three pointers for 18%
Loved seeing Roy Williams go down to Wofford tonight.
