Week #3 - Games of Interest.

Unread post by Obadiah »

A look at the rankings shows the poor performance of the A-10 in the early season as no A-10 teams are in the Top 25 in either poll. URI has dropped from #27 in the AP poll to a position where they got one vote. No other A-10 team got votes. Alabama breaks into the Top 25 as #25. Seton Hall moves to #20. Also getting votes are Nevada and PC. We see a similar situation in the USA Today Coaches poll. Here Virginia gets the #25 position and URI gets three votes as the only A-10 team getting any votes.

For what it's worth given the early time frame, here are key ratings for URI as of the beginning of Week #3:

RPI - 22
BPI - 40
Sagarin - 41
Pomeroy - 56

Monday night action, in the A-10:

VCU versus Marquette in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. 2:30 PM. On ESPN2.

Richmond versus UAB in the Cayman Islands Classic. 5 PM.

Rider at George Washington. Campus game in the Las Vegas Invitational. 7 PM.

Maryland - Eastern Shore at St. Bonaventure. Campus game in the Emerald Coast Classic. 7 PM.

No games involving URI OOC opponents scheduled.

In other games of interest:

Buffalo versus #12 Cincinnati in the Cayman Islands Classic. 7:30 PM.

Couple of non-basketball thoughts while watching VCU-Marquette... I’m glad Jonathan Williams is sticking with that “just got out from being trapped in the Jumanji game” look, and a couple of Marquette players have very punchable faces. That is all.

Also, I know I’m getting ahead of myself, but I really can’t wait for conference play.

That game is helter skelter!
VCU is good. It looks to me like they're back to the havoc that Shaka Smart started there.
They have so many long athletes! And they're nailing all these tough threes!
Hope they can pick up a good win.
Go VCU Go A-10

Marquette has a lot of shooters.

VCU looked lost in the half court - not a very smart offensive unit and they gave up some key second (and third and fourth and fifth) chance points at the wrong time.

I'm not impressed with VCU.

This could very well be a 1 bid league. What a terrible start.

Offsetting the disappointing VCU loss to Marquette, 94-83, Richmond's young players found their beat as the Spiders won in convincing fashion over UAB, 63-50. Richmond led throughout the game, most often by double digits, despite unspectacular shooting.

Yeah In that regard they kinda reminded me of us against Nevada.

I see them blossoming in A-10 play and making a push for an at large. Like they've done the last couple years.

They took a lot of dumb shots but they did have a lot of good passing sequences

More see-saw results in the A-10.

St. Bonaventure routs Maryland-Eastern Shore, 96-48. The game was only close for the first five minutes and Bonnies had overall terrific shooting hitting on 14 of 24 three-point shots alone.

On the down side, Rider upset George Washington on the Colonials home court, 67-65. GW completely botched their final possession to tie the game highlighted by a Rider steal. Rider lost three seniors and a grad student from last season and was forecast to finish in the bottom half of the Metro Atlantic.

Not looking like the A10 will end up anywhere near the 8th or so ranked conference they've been for the last few years.

That translates into 2 bids at most.

We will need to either win the regular season title or the conference tourney. And even winning the regular season might not guarantee anything.

#12 Cincinnati beat Buffalo in the Cayman Islands Classic, 73-67. Buffalo trailed most of game often by low double digits, but they rallied in second half to close gap to 4 with about a minute left, but could not get any closer.

VCU got into Maui later than everyone else due to the UVA game as well as a 5 hour delay in Dallas for engine trouble. Lost out on sleep and a full practice - I think it really showed today.

Also working Nine new players into the rotation. They will get better as the season goes along, enough talent to compete for an at large. Big game with Shaka and Texas coming to Richmond in two weeks.

At the half, Nevada leads Davidson by two points in what has been a see-saw battle. Davidson is rotating 10 men in the game and 8 of them have scored. Nevada is playing only 7, so Davidson may be trying to wear down the Wolfpack. The Davidson front court is doing a pretty good job of protecting the rim and has accomplished it without fouling. Nevada is 1-2 on FT's in the first 20 minutes. Davidson has already put up 18 three pointers, but their % is down versus their first two games.

UT Arlington gave Alabama all it could handle and led for over two thirds of the game. UTA had a shot at the win when Alabama turned the ball over with 17 seconds left and down one, but a jumper at the buzzer just missed. UTA who last year won the regular season Sun Belt title and made it to the NIT quarterfinals is expected to again contend for the Sun Belt title.

Nevada came out blazing in the second half and beat Davidson, 81-68. Davidson relied very much on the three point play and their % in the early going was weak, but with the game slipping away the Wildcats improved to end up 13-36. The Wolfpack won the battle of the FT line 12 -9, a marked contrast to URI game. Davison was sloppy with the ball as Nevada had 11 steals.

They too could not stop Caroline. Nevada overall had too much athleticism.

Davidson is just a one trick pony. If they don't shoot threes well they have no chance.

.
Caroline had 16 points, 9 rebounds
Caleb Martin had 26 points, 8 rebiunds
Nevada only takes 17 FTs compared to the 40+ vs URI. They still scored 81 points though.

All five A-10 teams that played on Wednesday night lost. The league is now barely above .500 vs D1 as it is just 30-28 with about 1/3 of the OOC schedule already concluded. It is presently rated the 13th best conference. It is behind leagues such as the MVC, WAC, Mountain West, Big West, and Summit. Conferences in this range (13th) of the RPI typically send just ONE team to the NCAA Tournament via the automatic bid route. They rarely send teams to the NCAA as an at large. The A-10 really needs to improve its OOC record in the next 5-6 weeks or it will be in trouble on selection Sunday. Its typical three or more NCAA bids does not look like it will be happening this year.

With the Bonnies game not yet completed, the A-10 slipped to below .500 tonight vs D1 teams. It is currently 31-34 with SBU trailing Maryland early in the 2nd half.

63-61 over Maryland!

There's some life yet in the A-10!

They also scored the game winner without Mobley on the court because he fouled out.

Hopefully that ends up being a solid win come tournament time. Maryland did not look as good as they have the past several years.
