There is no college game at the DDC tonight. Something called RI Comic Con is there for the next three days. PC got bumped and is playing a regular season game on its campus for the first time since 1972. Imagine that, playing a college game on an actual college campus. What a novel concept.

The Bonnies lose at home to Niagara, Fordham loses at home to Miami Ohio, Richmond loses at home to Delaware. Tough start for the A-10!

Comicon draws far more people than PC or URI hoops.

I think PC playing at Alumni Hall is extremely cool.

Pack that building with students and they’d be super tough.

Thank goodness we will never see our team in Alumni Hall again. Be like starting the game down 12-0

Right, but still have to think they should be able to beat Niagara at home if they are really the second best team in the conference and a tourney team, don't you think?

I agree. Niagara has been awful lately.

Tonight's results make me feel very good about conference play.

Crazy Stat Line for an A10 Player:
6'9" Senior Guard Yuta Watanabe in George Washington's 84-75 win over Howard ( I know, I know... he is not a URI Fan Favorite   )
40 minutes played
8-11 FG, 1-2 on 3FG, 2-2 FT for 19 points to lead GW
11 rebounds was a game high
3 assists and only 1 turnover
7 blocked shots
only 1 foul in 40 minutes

What strikes me is the 7 blocks coming from a Guard. There were only 4 other blocks in the entire game from both teams.

Will be interesting to watch this kid this year.

Nice win by Dayton last night with a last second basket by Josh Cunningham. Lob Pass inside somehow made it into Cunningham's hands and he laid it in. Cunningham's incoming pass and Basket begins at the 1 minute 10 second point in the video

Davidson was very impressive in its opener versus Charleston Southern as the Wildcats cruised to a 110-62 win, fueled by a conference-record 26 3-pointers (26-53), including 16 in the opening half!

Nice D Charlestown Southern!

Seriously, it was slaughter night in CBB....some of these schools the big boys played...who ever heard of them?

Although Indiana and West Virginia were on the wrong side of them....A@M looked very impressive.

Poor Huggy Bear.....wouldn't want to be in THAT locker room after the game.

Tough loss for Richmond as a strong second-half performance wasn't enough to erase a sluggish start as the Spiders fell to the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens, 76-63.

A sold-out crowd greeted the Spiders, who opened a season without a senior in the starting lineup for the first time since 1999, but it was clear from the opening tip that Delaware wasn't going to be easily effected by the hostile environment. The Fightin' Blue Hens made 21 of 28 field goals in the first half en route to building a lead that ballooned to as many as 33 and settled to 29 at halftime.

Arizona State won a fairly easy one last night. For those of you who like to follow local guys, Kimani Lawrence is out with an ankle injury, but they’re hoping it’s minor. I also really appreciate that ASU has a player named Remy Martin.

I know Brendan’s brother was hurt, but a loss to Niagara is still brutal.

PC did not really have much of a choice with venue location for last night's game given the DDC was not available and they really wanted a tune-up game prior to their meeting with top 15 Minnesota on Monday night. The game at Alumni Hall will have a big impact on their average attendance number. Will likely not hurt their bottom line however as they played two exhibition games at the DDC this year. They have played just one DDC exhibition in most recent years. I would guess the added DDC exhibition game was to soak their season ticket holders and make up for the loss of revenue for the Alumni Hall game.

That barn only holds about 2300......I think the only reason the A10 doesn't toss them is because they are in the NYC market....

They look like bottom feeder material again this season, after having some hope when Newbauer was hired.

A few Sunday games on tap as we conclude the shortened first week of season.

In the A-10:

George Mason travels to # 16 Louisville to take on the Cardinals. 2 PM. On ACCNE.

UMass at Harvard. 2 PM.

In URI OOC action, of interest is Monmouth at #23 Seton Hall, in a campus round game in the NIT Season Tip-Off. 1:30 PM. On FS1.

Mason is right there with the Cards with 5 mins left: 54-51 Louisville

Luwane Pipkins of UMass just put in a three point jumper with 7 seconds left in regulation to tie game versus Harvard at 58 and send it into OT.

UMass lost a heartbreaker at Harvard in OT, 70-67. Guard Luwane Pipkins hit another three with 8 seconds left in OT to tie game, but this time Harvard responded with its own three for the win. Pipkins scored 23 points and showed he will be one of the better guards in the A-10.

After a great effort George Mason fell to Louisville. Though a senior laden team, Louisville pulled this out on the heroics of freshman Jordan Nwora who put in three 3-pointers in a critical six minute span in the second half.

The A-10 is a woeful 10-6 after the first weekend. Three losses at home on Friday night alone (Richmond beat by Delaware/SBY by Niagara/Fordham by Miami-OH/. League has lost all three of its only road games (SJU @ Toledo/ UMass @ Harvard/ GMU @ Louisville). Hopefully the A-10 gets a quality road win late this Monday night.

Other notable leagues as of now:
Big East 10-1
AAC 8-2
Big Ten 14-1
ACC 14-3
SEC 13-0
Pac-12 10-1
Big-12 8-2

For St. Joseph’s, Lamarr Kimble reinjured his foot, the same injury that kept him out of the end of last season. Charlie Brown is set to miss some time with the wrist injury. Last year, they lost Demery, Newkirk, and Oliva. I’m not saying this is retribution for taking out Jarvis and KI in that game two years ago, but I’m not NOT saying it, either.

But for real, Newkirk and Brown are two of my favorite players to watch in the conference, and SJU should be really good if they can stay healthy, which is good for the conference.

Still not sure I’m ok with this, though. ;)
