The AP Poll is typically discussed in terms of a team's ranking. I find it equally interesting to look at the AP Poll points, which are the basis for the ranking.

For example, In week 14 of the AP Poll, URI received 486 points from the AP Poll particpants; in week 15, URI score jumped to 666 points, an increase of 37%. Although not as impressive as the 150% increase in points that North Carolina received this week, the 37% increase in score points is indicative of the fact that more of the AP voters have become aware of the achievements that URI M-BB is making this season. .

Also, looking solely at the AP Poll rankings obscures the natural clustering that tends to occur in any sample of values. Looking at the AP Poll point scores (rather than at the AP Poll rankings) allows the various teams to be "clustered" based on their average point scores for that week.

For week 15 of the AP Poll, such a "clustered" ordering based on the average of how each of the AP voters scored each team would look lke this:

First place Virginia

tied for second Michigan State
                        Villanova

third place Xavier

fourth place Cincinnati

tied for sixth place Purdue
                        Texas Tech

eighth place Ohio State

tied for ninth place Gonzaga
                        Auburn

tied in eleventh place Clemson
                        Duke

tied thirteenth place Kansas
                        North Carolina

tied fifteenth place Saint Mary's
                        Rhode Island

tied sixteenth place Arizona
                        Tennessee

eighteenth place	Wichita State

twentieth place West Virginia

tied twenty-first place Texas A&M
                        Michigan

twenty-third place Oklahoma

tied twenty-fourth Nevada
                        Arizona State

The above analysis is reinforced by URI's #14 placement in the Coaches Poll.

A graphical representation for the AP Poll point scores for last week and this week are as follows (with the Rhode Island entry each week colored blue):
Week 14 AP Poll points.jpg
Week 15 AP Poll points.jpg
My summary points are
  • that this week URI has taken a meaningful step "up" in times of national awareness
  • that the national rating on a subjective "national experts doing the selection" basis (as opposed to the computerized objective rating supplied by the BPI, KenPom, and Sagarin numbers) would place URI M-BB as being rated #15 in the country, for this week at least

As of Friday morning, these teams have lost this week: # 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 15, 21, 23, 25. St. Mary's is # 15, and they lost at San Francisco. We would be no worse then #15 if we win. Barring any leapfrogging....

Wow, that's almost half of the Top 25. (I know that's statistically impossible but you know what I mean.)

We should not move down much as a result of losing a game in Olean when we had multiple legit shots to force overtime.

Unless of course the whole thing is a sham....

Cartel. We'll drop four or five places. And speaking of shams, I can't wait to see Li'l Kevie's ballot.

I would give 2:1 odds that McNamara does not have us in his top-25 this week.

Seth Davis always releases his Top 25 ballot on Sunday evening; we dropped from # 14 last week to # 16 this week. A two spot drop in the Top 25 poll is about what I expected. We've got 4 regular season games to get those two spots back.

In Kevin's defense, he hasn't been more than a couple positions from "actual" Rhody poll position the whole time we were getting serious consideration. Not sure why the hate, since we've identified some other journalists who only last week gave Rhody their first vote, and at #25 no less. Just scroll up if you wanna go after someone's ballot.

Normally, the local writer would be slightly above rather than slightly below.

I would rather Kevin be within 2 +/- actual position and not artificially push Rhody higher than they deserve in his mind. There are plenty of terrible voters out there and the last thing we want to SUPPORT is local media boosting their local teams. How about we just ask that they do their homework and put together a reasonably logical ballot?

The most obvious answer is because it is fun. The real answer is that him consistently being lower on URI than the rest of the voters (only 4 voters had URI lower on their ballots) and him having been late to including URI in the first place - combined with the fact that we play in his market and he should not be later or less convinced than all of these voters outside the market - calls his objectiveness into question, especially considering all of the history there.

Here we are a year out from knowing we needed to win the A10 Tourney to get a bid, and I'm going to state that I loved the St. Bonnies loss. This is speaking relatively, but it resets the clock. Now the pressure is mostly off, we felt the pain of defeat, and are recharged for the rest of the season.

No shit we always want to win every game, but sometimes you have to look at things strategically. The SB loss, like the Fordham one last year, may be the best thing to happen all season.

To be honest, as much as losing is never "good" that loss looks to have helped the A10 overall. We will get the benefits of having another high RPI team in conference boost up the other teams' schedules.

That said both we and the bonnies need to run the table to March 11th, with a Rhody victory and a 5 seed :)

I don't think you can ever call any loss a 'best thing' in and of itself. It totally depends on how the team responds.
If they had lost the game after Fordham, or if they were to lose tomorrow (they won't), I don't think either would be called a 'good' thing...but totally see blue's point on helping the A10 overall.

its good in the sense that they dont have to think about the streak anymore or a perfect A10 season anymore.

Lets them relax...and really this year you cant have a better loss than losing at SBU

edit: 18 in the coaches poll....so 18/18 now. more than fair
