I'm equally surprised about Florida -- a week ago they lost to a bad Ole Miss team ... this week they beat a mid-level tournament team at home, and then went to Kentucky and won, but Kentucky they AP just said was not good enough to be in the Top 25. Yet Florida goes from 1 vote last week to 366 votes this week.
Two things to remember...

1) The rule of recency: when given a number of data points, people remember things that are most recent.

2) The power of national TV: people see St. Mary's go to Gonzaga and win. People see Florida go to UK (a tough place to win at regardless of how well UK is playing) and win.

URI will start getting some games on NBCSN and ESPN2 here in the coming weeks. Keep winning and they'll continue to rise up the polls. However, keep in mind that if they lay an egg in front of everyone, say bye-bye to the ranking. Established programs can lose some games and keep their ranking. But not programs on the fringe of "big time."
If URI keeps winning for, say, two or three weeks and they gets safely inside the top-25 (i.e., #18 or #19), they may be able to withstand one loss without dropping out of the polls. But if they lose this week or next week, they'll be out and it probably doesn't matter what they do the rest of the way - they won't get back in.

Of course, they don't have to do anything really special the next couple weeks to move up - the way the polls work, if you're in and you win, you'll jump over teams that lose. Some of these teams toward the back end of the top-25 that play in tough conferences will inevitably lose.

It's all about winning, even if it is ugly

URI Ranked 9 in RPI
Ranked 3rd in OOC SOS and 7th in OOC RPI

Imagine we played Virginia and Alabama without key players and Nevada with EC hurt last few minutes

Look at Middle Tennessee (15-5) Ranked 27th but Ranked 4th in OOC SOS and 20th in OOC RPI

Good to see Teams get recognized for playing tough OOC Schedules and Performing well in those tough schedules

I’d be shocked if we are in the teens. Don’t see us moving needle that much with wins against Fordham and Duquesne. I think winning at UMass and VCU this week would move us up significantly, simply bc of the name value VCU has with voters.

URI #22 in CBS Poll Out Today

The Rams have won 12 straight games since losing at Alabama. Two of their three losses are to teams also ranked in the Top 25 (and one).

That's the way it works. One thing to keep in mind is if teams in the "also receiving votes" category, that are from strong conferences, beat highly ranked teams. They can leapfrog us. As can any team below us from a stronger conference that beats ranked teams. It's really hard to go unbeaten in conference play, but we certainly have a shot.

This streak has been so important. I hope they continue to go all out. There are thousands of teams that could have/would have.

Reaching your potential is the key. Not going through the motions and then saying that youre better or that everybody knows youre better than that opponent. Keep working hard and this will continue and go down in the books as a very special year.

Same goes for the coaching staff. So many times people think their best is out ahead of them and really it might just be this season. Look at the Bobby Knights, Champs 76, 81, and 87. Then nothing. Arguably the best team is the '76 team.

Gary Parrish at CBS advanced Kentucky to 21 ahead of 22 Rhody. I trust his evaluation so we will see if others do the same. We saw Seth Davis being UK in but also advanced Rhody to 20.

I figure we will stay or maybe jump to 22/23, but based on our schedule i can’t fathom seeing us go above 20 even winning out.

Someone said it, but other teams will have opportunities for big wins in conference. We won’t.

I don’t see Rhody going undefeated in the A10. If they do however, they will be ranked much higher than 20th. It would put their record at 26-3. My guess is they would be around 15th.

A loss at St. Bonnies and/or at VCU wouldn't be crippling. I thought at Davidson wouldn't be a bad loss either, but they've lost 2 straight and aren't as strong as they once looked.

Not that I think voters should do this, but I wonder if there is some game theory involved here - if he thinks we will get underrated by other voters so he tried to compensate a little to correct what he sees as a mistake in the overall rankings?

while 9 certainly feels high, I think he's doing a bit of what more voters need to. Look at the resume without a name or conference attached to it:

kentuckys win over WVU made sure we didn't move up much. We should be ahead of Clemson though. They got blown out 61-36 to VA and barely beat a mediocre team in GATECH.

UNC #19 Clemson #20 play tonight so we are guaranteed to move up if we win out this week.

I'm OK if a voter jumped other teams ahead of Rhody. 1-4 spots wiggle room in this subjective process is to be expected from voter to voter. It's the ones that make decisions that can't be easily explained that should be called out. Only 4 (possibly 5) non-believers in Rhody left.

It's worth noting that team sheets for the NCAA tournament committee will now include ESPN's BPI and SOR, KPI, Sagarin and Kenpom ratings which are as follows:

BPI: 31
SOR: 19
KPI: 24
Sagarin: 34
Kenpom: 33

It's great that Katz has us at 9 but I think that's clearly overrating us even with our high RPI.
