While looking back thru the thread for links to a page with all the coaches shows, I stumbled on some really good (note: not actually good) conversation from last season. I read down pg 18, but I'm sure there is a treasure trove back there. I feel pretty good about my contributions, at least from what I read on that page. The despair is unreal, and the pining for UMass's future (lol) is hilarious.

Yep.
And that was only 8 months ago.
Amazing what a winning streak can accomplish.
Funny to read now about the desire to increase attendance and fill up the RC when just 8 months ago there was talk of boycotting, offering tickets up for free and so on.
Same year we are in now.
Now is a lot more fun. Jim Baron 2.0 was brutal.

From what I recall there wasn't any real news or insight that would be new if you read this board closely.

The most interesting exchange centered around recruiting. Steve asked Dan how he balances going after highly rated recruits but making sure he doesn't spend too many resources in the persuit of someone not coming here. Dan said that many times it's up to the assistant closest to the recruitment reassuring Dan that we're still right in the thick of things and pointing out reasons we might have a leg up over programs that might seem better. Said Preston did it with EC and Dave did it this year. Cox then joked that when he was convincing Dan he was really trying to convince himself.

I thought interesting when they talked about new coaches to the A10. DH was impressed by the caliber of the new Coaches. Matt Macall was very successful coming in to UMASS.
Dan talked very highly about Keith Dombrot. Said he signed a 7 year contract giving him plenty of time to develop the program there. Dan said when Bobby coached in the MAC he had told Dan in the past that he was very impressed with Keith Dombrot at Akron from among all of the MAC head coaches, and how successful he was and how he handled himself. Got me looking up what he has done so far. Dombrot has already brought in 5 transfers including Frankie Hughes who played well as a freshman at Missouri last year - and URI was interested in Hughes too. He has also already signed 5 HS players for next year. Dambrot coached Lebron James in HS and they remain very close.
David Cox was a guest with Dan. David spoke often and was very impressive in my opinion.
Nice show to kick off the season.

I'm not sold on Macall yet. Obviously he wasn't UMass' first choice, but that's not a huge issue. I'd be more concerned where he had a huge first year with someone else's players then had a drop off in year 2 and supposedly lost the locker room. Jury is definitely out on that hire.

Meanwhile some of us have jobs and kids and/or don't live in the area and so going to or even listening live to a radio show at 6pm on a weeknight is about as much of an option as taking a vacation to the moon. Listening to a radio show about college basketball ranks on my priority list as "something to listen to while I do the dishes after I put my kids to bed." It's about 300 items from the top of the list of things to do at 6pm on a weeknight.

It's an awesome thing for people who are fortunate enough to be able to go, or who happen to have it as an option on the radio during their commute home. If I could go, I would. But realistically, if they want people to hear the show, they need to make it available for people to listen on their own time. That's true for any media nowadays.

Keep in mind a few things:
- We did not even know there were going to be a Coach's Show at all until the day of the Coach's Show
- The Show was announced the Day of the Coaches Show
- The Season Schedule was announced the day of the Coaches Show
- Mike L just recently departed for BC so a little patience is probably needed as the transition takes place
- So to expect that there should be a recording of the show available that same night was probably a long shot at best to expect
I tried to list some of the things discussed on the show as did a few others for those who could not make the show - understanding it was last minute

Just be glad they had the show at all. You could also have someone record it for you.

Ok I'll have someone pull out a blank cassette tape and record it in their boom box.

I get that there was short notice and Mike recently left, but you'd assume the procedure would be in place already to get it posted. It seems like the holdup is at 920, and honestly it's fine. Not a huge deal. Nobody is ready to riot over it. I'm sure it will go up as soon as they can get it ready, and like I said it's good they get to work out the new process before we start playing for real.

I talked to George the GM of the Mews and told him that the show was announced the day of. Obviously, he seemed a bit surprised that they didn't announce it sooner, and I'm sure the schedule of shows had been determined a while ago. Also, mid-October seems to be early for the first show of the season. I live only about 10 minutes from the Mews, so, fortunately, it's easy for me to get there. I know it can definitely be a challenge to plan to go for other folks on the board.

Still short notice, but there was a tweet earlier in the week that announced this show and the football coach’s one. Not sure from what account because I can’t find it now.

Marketing is one of a few still missing pieces for the program. It's ok, could be much much better.

Isn't there a marketing major at URI? Why isn't that program tied into the athletic program to provide real world experience? Or is it?

Been my biggest complaint since 1984 (Freshman year) for all of URI (not limited to Basketball) sports. It has been a chore to get news, find broadcasts, watch games on TV/online, etc. I have had conversations with my dad & brother about why URI is always 2nd class when it comes to marketing, providing information, timing of information, mis-information for 33 years and it's still the same issues. When URI came out to UofA a few years back I experienced it first hand when calling the ticket office trying to get answers to basic questions about the team's trip.

I could start a whole other board just for my frustrations over the years living so far away from RI on trying to get information. Thank the heavens for this board. I am blessed to have you guys.

Here it is! WHJJ's podcasts/clips are now exclusively available in the iHeart environment. At least for me, they are requiring that you log in using Facebook/Google/iHeart account to listen. I chose to connect with my Google account. No problem.

I agree with Dan. Marketing and info is terrible and has been so for 40 years. I think the people in the sports info department believe the world ends at the state line

That's silly...everyone knows that the world is bordered by 138, Plains Road, Flagg Road and Upper College.

But isn't his coach's show part of the problem? In three years they've been north of Providence once. Wright's Farm has been one of the major sponsors all this time and they've never done a show from there. Instead of doing yet another show from the Mews, coming off your most successful season with a ton of buzz, why wouldn't you have a preseason show in a different part of the state and save Mews shows for the middle of the season?

I generally agree with this idea, but just to clarify I think by "Dan" the above posters were referring to our poster DaninAZ and not Coach Hurley.

Yeah, a hundo on this, but it's even worse. Honestly most years they don't make it north of Warwick There should at least be one or two Providence shows a season. Need to stake a claim in the cap city.

Also not surprised pod delay was iHeart related. Their exclusivity nonsense when it comes to that stuff blows. ESPN, CBS Sports Radio, basically everybody in the industry gets that having your shows/content accessible on multiple platforms is a boon, but iHeart refuses to get down. Irritating.

I'm fine with that. We have our turf, and it's ridiculous to expect our coaches/staff/players to drive an hour and a half once a week for a 1 hour show.

If we want to be the biggest program in the state we can't continue to act like a directional university, the University of Southern Rhode Island. And I don't think once a week is necessary. But if you're not doing something north of Providence once a year you're essentially telling people up there they don't matter and we don't care. Can't expect them not to be PC fans at that point.

Yeah, RR2 exactly. BM you're right it couldn't be every week, but we should be having at least two Prov shows and one north of there per season, that's not a lot to ask...especially over breaks when students aren't around. Gotta THINK BIG!

Ignoring the northern part of the state is also ignoring southeastern MA.
