The A-10 in Early Season Tournaments

Unread post by Obadiah »

One measure of a conference's prestige is the number of conference members playing in early season tournaments and the quality of those tournaments. For one of the first times in recent memory, all 14 A-10 teams are playing in quality tournaments this season.

Power 5: 23 teams
Big East/AAC: 6

Great opportunities for A10 teams to help the conference profile in the OOC.

Keep in mind that no A-10 teams are participating in the year's biggest event - the Nike PK80 honoring founder Phil Knight. This tournament has 16 teams, most of which are among the highest level in NCAA basketball. The fact that all these teams are in a single tourney has watered down most all the others.

The PK80 is played in Portland and reason Portland and Portland State are in this Tournament. I don't know that this has watered down most of the other tournaments because it is still only 14 teams in addition to Portland/Portland State.
I like that the A10 has all 14 teams participating in Tournaments and some very good Tournaments at that.

Portland - North Carolina
Arkansas - Oklahoma
UCONN - Oregon
Michigan State- DePaul
Portland State - Duke
Butler - Texas
Florida - Stanford
Ohio State - Gonzaga

If I take Rothstein's Too Early Top 25 List from April 3rd, the HK80 has 5 teams ranked. North Carolina, Michigan State, Duke, Florida and Gonzaga

Portland - #6 North Carolina
Arkansas - Oklahoma
UCONN - Oregon
#2 Michigan State - DePaul
Portland State - #3 Duke
Butler - Texas
#19 Florida - Stanford
Ohio State - #11 Gonzaga

Using Rothstein's Top 25 for the Tournaments A10 Teams are in..............
#10 Wichita State Maui Invitational with VCU
#12 Cincinnati Cayman Islands Classic with Richmond
#13 USC Diamond Head Classic with Dayton
#14 Virginia Tech 2K Classic with Saint Louis
#17 Miami Diamond Head Classic with Dayton
#15 Northwestern Naismith Hall of Fame Tip-Off with LaSalle
#16 Minnesota Barclays Center Classic with UMASS
#18 Xavier Las Vegas International with George Washington
#22 Virginia NIT Season Tip Off with #23 Rhode Island

So Bottom Line HK has 5 ranked teams. Tournaments that include the 14 A10 Teams have 9 ranked teams (10 if you count our own URI)
