I've never been sold on Cooley. What did he really do at Fairfield? Yes, he had a good record there, but could really never win the big games, never Danced. Sound familiar?

He talks a big game anyway. I guess he'll be OK in the long run, seems his players like him. We'll see.

Having talent is one thing. Putting it all together is another.

bigappleram wrote:yes Ramulous, on paper Council, Cotton, Batts and Henton are all legit talents. Dunn was a top recruit. Fortune shows promise and Sidiki should be helping inside.

they have 4 above average back court players, a legit 3, and a banger. all on paper. and that should be enough to beat Depaul of all teams.

the true test will be to see if Cooley can get these guys to mesh, because they look very disjointed right now, even though IMO they have talent.
Here's the reality:
VC is at about 75%
Cotton is worse IMHO
Dunn is coming off surgery and hasn't played in 6 months
Sudiki is still getting acclimated
It is what it is

All true, Sean. We'll see how much better they get when [or if] they all get up to speed by the end of the season.

Still most likely looks like "wait 'till next year" for PC, same as us.

sean i still think your biggest problem is having 3 guys (VC, Dunn and Cotton) that all need the ball in their hands to be effective. they are not compatible at all. Dunn's development will be stunted by playing a year off the ball. So i dont think you will see what he can really be as a Div 1 PG until mid to end of next season, in reality he will not get much time leading the team this year. you need those 3 guys on the court as much as possible to have a fighting chance this year, which will cost Fortune some development time as well. Sudiki has not impressed me at all in the 3 games I have seen him. I agree it is too early to tell and that you guys are very banged up right now.

I'm not worried about Dunn. Even before he got hurt I saw this as a 10-15 minute year for him.
He will be fine. Sudiki has been uneven. I expect more as he learns(accepts) his role.
Cotton is most dangerous as a spot up shooter who occasionally goes to the hole to keep people honest.
VC s injuries affect him the most. Right now; there is no need to help out bc he can't blow by anyone.

The verdict is still out on Cooley.

His recruiting seems phenomenal.

His coaching, on the other hand...

I mean, he didn't lose anybody from last year's team. Shouldn't the team be better from experience alone? I know you can blame injuries, but that still doesn't excuse a loss to Brown and a loss to Depaul at home by 10.

I think like last year, this is still a bit of a mulligan year for Cooley, given the composition of the roster thanks to injuries (Council, Cotton now) and NCAA issues with Ledo. (Although really, if Ledo was on this team, it doesn't help them share the basketball any better.) I think next year is the year he'll be expected to produce results, whether it's an NIT or NCAA berth, with an outside chance of him getting fired if things go deep in the crapper. Year 4, you think he has to dance or be right on the bubble, otherwise he's gone. (Note: I'd give a similar prognosis for Hurley, in that if the Rams aren't in the NCAA tournament or NIT by year three, and still around the 10 to 15 win range, his seat will probably be hot.)

Closing out the week with yesterday's action;

Temple lost a close one at #6 Kansas, 69-62. Temple took its first lead in game 5 minutes into second half. The Owls held that lead until 9 minutes left, and at that time Temple and Kansas traded leads until the Jayhawks took control with under 3 minutes to play. But Kansas did not seal the win until Travis Teleford put in a clutch three pointer with 36 seconds left on game clock.

Loyola (MD) moved its record to 11-5, 3-1 in MAAC with a solid win over St. Peter's, 74-58.

SMU lost a heartbreaker in its C-USA home opener against Tulsa, 48-47. SMU rallied from a 17 point halftime deficit to take the lead in the waning minutes, but a Tulsa three pointer with 3.7 seconds left was the dagger that gave the Hurricanes the win.

On to conference play!

Gotta love ESPN.
A 7 point game and they did not show a single Temple highlight
on Sports Center, just Kansas scoring.
What will they talk about now that RGIII is out? He's their new Tebow/Farve/Lebron.
They manage to get him mentioned about 20 times an hour.

If it wasn't for ESPN, we'd never know who the Rock-Paper-Scissors champion is. I remember seeing it a few years ago (don't why I didn't turn it off). It ended with the new champ saying "This is a young man's game."

You know who is good as an analyst and I would have never guessed it is Eric Mangini. But yeah, i long for the days of Sportscenter where they actually showed highlights. It's kind of like MTV when they used to actually play music.

Now they'll move on to the Ray Lewis farewell tour. You know, the guy they love despite the fact that he was undeniably involved in the murder of two people? Yeah, that guy. I still watch SportsCenter in the AM from time to time, and I can't really justify why. It's unbearable.

Big TV money and vested interests are fueling the conference upheaval around the country.

None of it would be happening if there were a playoff system instead of a sham in BCS football. 16 team tournament all conferences send their champ. Several at larges to fill the field. All have access to the championship not just the big 4. You could stay in big east or mountain west or cusa and have a shot

Last nights game was a fraud on all of BCS football

Boise State in the four years or so, prior to this season,
could have beaten any BCS team on any given night.
They proved it, having beaten every BCS team they faced during that time,
since the famous Oklahoma game. Plus, they were a lot of fun to watch.
Chris Peterson is as good a coach as there is, but like BSU, respect is hard to come by.
ESPN's analysts constantly put them down in subtle ways, and when BSU lost by one point
in games to give them two one loss seasons, they were relegated to some obscure bowl game.
You could almost feel the relief in Bristol, CT, when BSU lost, so they could tout their beloved SEC.
Meanwhile BCS schools with 2-3 losses went to better bowls.
Also, the SEC didn't do very well this year in the bowls, except for Alabama. They had a losing overall
bowl record this season.
There is no sport that plays up to the haves, and shuns the have nots, more than NCAA BCS football.

The top three teams in the SEC steamrolled their opponents. LSU lost a tough game to Clemson and SCar beat Michigan without its AA running back. Of the top squads; only Florida didnt show up.

The SEC is where the big boys play. 7 straight doesn't lie. Fir the record; Boise got slaughtered 3 yrs ago by Georgia; before returning the favor last year.

SEC teams are battle tested. Anyone can win one tough game. In the SEC, you need to win multiple.
Bama played 4 top 10 teams, 2 on the road before ND.

Toughest conference in the land.

Get your facts straight. Georgia beat Boise State in 2005 .BEFORE Chris Peterson was coach. That's EIGHT years ago, not three.
Three years ago, they were 14-0 and number four in the US. Peterson has lost 8 games in 7 years.
Considering the resources and loaction of BSU, that's incredible, and an amazing story.
None of the recruiting advantages of playing in a BCS conference.
Two out of the top 3 SEC teams LOST. LOST. And So. Carolina should have lost, too.

I wasn't trying to debate anything. I am still trying to figure out what you are saying. The SEC is the best football conference and it really isn't close. Winning 2/3 of your bowl games by a substantial margin is proof. They do it every year. If you want to gerrymander an imaginary cutoff of the top three teams, I guess that is fine. I hate the SEC and how they do things but, unlike Notre Dame, they actual have earned the praise by what they have done the last ten years.

the SEC is the best conference in football, but its not a fair battle. the things they are allowed to do the majority of other BCS schools, let alone non BCS, are not allowed. They over recruit, they have "gray shirts", they have little to no academic standards to uphold. Bama against ND was like the best Class A team in RI playing the best Class C team...the disparity in talent level was massive. Boys against Men.
The alabama front 7 rivals some pro teams. They pushed Te'o 10 yards down field on every play, heck NDs top tackler was their safety. Never a good thing.

In 1999, URI was ranked 6th nationally after the season, in some major poll.

Honestly, I don't think you can judge a conference strength just by poll placement.

I guess what I mean is that I don't think Georgia is the 3rd or 4th best team in the SEC.

They were penalized for playing in the SEC Championship game, which to me wasn't right. Georgia and Florida had the same record, but Georgia won the head-to-head. Georgia fights 'Bama tooth and nail, loses a heartbreaker, and plummets down and doesn't even qualify for a BCS game because Florida got to sit around on Championship Saturday.

Honestly, I don't even know where you are getting "two of the top three teams losing."

BCS Standings End of Year -

2 - Bama (WON)
3 - Florida (LOST)
7 - Georgia (WON)
8 - LSU (LOST)
9 - Texas A&M (WON)
10 - South Carolina (WON)
