Week #9 -Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Other than a few stray made for TV games, this is the last week of OOC games for most A-10 schools. After this week, the SOS for each A-10 school is about the same after factoring in each school’s RPI.

In this week’s poll rankings, Butler has the #17 slot in the AP poll and the #20 slot in the USA/Today Coaches poll. Both VCU and Temple are getting points in both polls in the others category.

Besides Saint Louis's win over #20 New Mexico, other A-10 action yesterday included:

Iona beating St. Bona, 93-74

Temple over Bowling Green, 75-57.

St. Joseph’s over Drexel, 63-49.

Fordham beat Monmouth, 82-71, to win their fourth.

No A-10 games on New Year’s Day.

Also, in yesterday OOC action, Brown fell to Albany, 57-50.

St. Mary's edged Harvard, 70-69.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Watched St. Mary's- Harvard.
Harvard had the game in the bag, leading by 17 points at one point.
They looked so well coached.
Then the refs took over with some really weird calls. One key jump ball that
lead to SMC gettng the lead, was held for less than a tenth of a second. The replay showed
Delladova barely touched the ball after a Harvard player rebounded it.
Harvard got the ball on what could have been the game ending posession, and threw it out of bounds.
The game winner came on two free throws, with 1 second on the clock!
Refs took the game away from Harvard, who had just beaten
Cal, earlier on their trip.

I have got to think the same. I don't think St. Mary's with its 3500 seat gym generates enough revenues to be able to buy a lot of games. Playing Harvard, Yale, and URI at home this year with a single trip back next season for return games seems to make a lot of sense.

Basketball is by far the worst sport in terms of the referee's ability to affect the outcome of the game......the only thing close is the home plate umpire in baseball.

The big schools almost always play at home....almost always control the selection (and future selection) of the referees...and almost always get the calls from referees who are afraid to piss off big time coaches and ADs and lose future gigs.

It is my second biggest pet peeve in sports behind the farce that is the BCS national championship and the one bowl game that means something and every other one being an exhibition game.

Referee selection is for ooc games is agreed upon beforehand by both schools and is almost always from a neutral conference.

Those NCAA television shares and additional donations generated because of them can buy plenty of opponents. Forget the size of the arena. When you go to the tournament four times since '05 the cash rolls in.

In tonight’s action so far.

In the A-10:

VCU bolts to a 20+ point lead in first 10 minutes of game and blasts to a 109-58 win at East Tennessee State. VCU moves its record to 10-4.

UMass wins another squeaker, beating Miami (O), 70-69.

#17 Butler pulls away in second half to beat Penn, 70-57.

Xavier continues its fade as it loses at Wake Forest, 66-59.

Richmond in an impressive win over Air Force, 91-68. The Spiders led the entire way.

In OOC action:

#8 Ohio State in a romp over Nebraska, 70-44.

Norfolk State edged at Ball State, 62-61.

Auburn in a nice win over Florida State, 78-72.

After a close first half, Drexel goes on tear in second half to win at Georgia State, 77-60.

Vermont wins at UNH, 64-51.

Charlotte moves its record to 12-2 with an OT victory over UNC-Asheville, 71-63. The tight win over an average UNCA team adds further questions about Charlotte’s record given the low SOS of its OOC schedule. We will get answer to this when the Rams square off versus Charlotte on January 12 at the Ryan Center. Be there to root the Rams on in their A-10 home opener as this is a key game telling us much about how far URI can go in the conference.

Willie Clayton had 16 rebounds for Charlotte tonight - only a freshman who played with Robert Carter for 3 years at Thomasville HS before Carter transferred his Sr year. Carter was heavily recruited by URI. Carter also had a nice game tonight. Clayton has been solid for Charlotte and in the starting lineup.
Marcus Georges-Hunt scored 16 points, fellow freshman Robert Carter Jr. had his third double-double and Georgia Tech defeated Chattanooga 74-58 for its sixth straight victory.
Carter had 13 points and a career-best 12 rebounds as the Yellow Jackets (10-2) pulled away in the second half after a sluggish start.

It'll be interesting to see how Clayton does against us.

Closing out tonight's action:

In Chicago, Seton Hall got a last second bucket to beat De Paul, 73-72.

SMU came close to handing Wyoming its first loss of season, but the Mustangs faltered in the last minute to lose 59-56.

Good point Obadiah about the Charlotte game. There are certain games that are extremely difficult to get a W ie. at St. Louis and Butler to name a few. But if we want to get to Brooklyn, this one would be a good one to get. Too bad, the students won't be back on campus.

Not much action this evening.

In somewhat of a surprise, visiting Northeastern overcame a 7 point halftime deficit on some hot shooting (9-16 on treys) to beat George Mason, 84-74. CAA opener for both teams.

Canisius failed to defend its home court and dropped a 66-45 decision to Fairfield, a team it had beaten easily in its MAAC opener in December. Canisius was behind all the way, committing 20 turnovers and had a terrible shooting night, 30% on FG and 51% FT. Billy Baron scored 14 points.

Nice win for Bryant in their NEC opener at Robert Morris, 84-77.

URI/Brown was not the only rock fight tonight. GW was defeated at Georgia, 52-41. GW shot under 25% for the game, 0-12 on treys alone.

Saint Louis, on its home court, had a surprisingly close game versus Savannah State, but eventually prevailed 67-59. Savannah actually took a one point lead with six minutes remaining.

It looks like Fordham will lose its 11th game as Ole Miss now leads at Oxford, 85-61 with under 5 to play.

Also, Loyola (MD) beat Rider, 71-65

A busy day of action in both the A-10 and among URI OOC opponents. Please feel free to join in updating as the day wears on.

In already completed games, we see the usual difficulty teams have on the road as both Seton Hall and Virginia Tech are handily defeated. Seton Hall took its lumps from #21 Notre Dame as the Pirates fell victim to the Irish second half blitz, 93-74.

In a game that was no contest from beginning, Virginia Tech was routed by Maryland, 94-71.

VCU will likely pull away and win, but Lehigh is playing them very tough right now- down by only 5 with 7:15 to go. And McCollum, the leading scorer in the country, has been out for the second half.

If the broken foot rumor for McCollum is true, it's a shame... terrible for him and Lehigh.

for long stretches of the brown and depaul game, admittedly a small body of work to evaluate, the Friars have looked very similar to some of our Baron teams.

good talent, deep, porous defense, sloppy and not fundamentally sound offense, and players that aren't very compatible with each other.

Interesting comment BAR. I was just thinking the same thing. It seems the Boo Birds are beginning to stir in Friartown. Now Jim Donaldson has chimed in on Cooley's contract extension to the tune of ..... undeserving. Some how I am getting the feeling that Cooley may be PC's version of Jim Baron, except Cooley is homegrown. Hope I'm wrong on that.

yes Ramulous, on paper Council, Cotton, Batts and Henton are all legit talents. Dunn was a top recruit. Fortune shows promise and Sidiki should be helping inside.

they have 4 above average back court players, a legit 3, and a banger. all on paper. and that should be enough to beat Depaul of all teams.

the true test will be to see if Cooley can get these guys to mesh, because they look very disjointed right now, even though IMO they have talent.
