No real surprises from #URI practice. Guards look good. Big men will scrap for playing time. Langevine, Akele, Preston leading early. #Rams

Does anyone know what type of minor surgery EC had on his knee? Was this a normal follow up procedure? When was the procedure done?

Re: We're talking about practice...
Can't say for sure, but when I talked with Hurley at the autograph/A10 trophy thing at the Ryan a few months back, he mentioned it but was very nonchalant about it. Not that I expect he would say otherwise, but he seemed pretty open and up front about it.

Re: We're talking about practice...
For EC, I think it was officially reported as arthroscopic surgery just to clean up the knee, nothing major. He's been doing regular conditioning work without the brace. It sounds like they did some full court 5 on 5 at the practice today, so no need to push it.

I guess Koch wasn't impressed with Layssard, Tertsea or Berry. No mention of any of them when talking about leaders competing for frontcourt minutes.Rhody74 wrote:http://www.providencejournal.com/sports ... ns-success

Re: We're talking about practice...
Well, part of that is you can't list everyone when talking about leaders. I guess I should be happy that Akele and Preston looked good, but I was hoping Tertsea and/or Layssard would have been ahead of those two.

Re: We're talking about practice...
So if anything, you'd think Tertsea and Layssard would have a leg up where Preston hasn't been with the team before.

Re: We're talking about practice...
They wouldn't have brought Preston in if he was going to start off behind Tertsea and Layssard. Similarly, Akele was well ahead of those guys on the depth chart when we last saw the team just a few months ago. Ultimately those guys may come on and surpass those in front of them (and I'm cautiously optimistic about the development of both of them), but I think it is a lot to expect for it to have happened during the last few months.RhowdyRam02 wrote:Well, part of that is you can't list everyone when talking about leaders. Re: We're talking about practice...
No worries guys. Mr. Koch, like us, hasn't seen Tertsea play and very little of Lasyard. It makes sense to me that because of his limited knowledge of them and his more familiarity with Langevine and Akelle together with his most recently becoming familiar with Preston that he wouldn't mention them. I wouldn't either under the circumstances.

Re: We're talking about practice...
Layssard is the one I wonder about the most. He was the one who was supposed to be the best of the bigs coming out of high school. ARD loved him. Ace has said that Layssard didn't take last off season seriously. I trust her knowledge. He didn't prepare himself to help the team last year. Hopefully his mindset has changed.

Re: We're talking about practice...
To be fair to Mike, that's not exactly what I said. He's a young man who has always struggled with his weight but did work in high school and lose some weight to put himself in a position to earn a solid D1 scholarship. He came out of a regular high school program, not a place like St. Pat's (Cyril) that had high level coaching and training resources. His mistake was showing up to Summer 2 looking like he hadn't done the work they asked him to. There's always a learning curve for freshmen to figure out what it takes to win at the next level, and those four freshmen came into a situation where the team was just supposed to win and be good. Dowtin was an unusual freshmen, and he "got it" right away, while another guy is clowning around right after a loss thinking it's all just going to turn around on it's own. To be clear, I don't think players should go crazy after a loss and get down on themselves but should respect the position they're in. It's always tough to come in your first year and not get minutes when you're used to being the main guy, but this is an excellent group of coaches and players overall who set things up to have a lot of fun and to work the right way.

Re: We're talking about practice...
I think Preston and Akele will get the most minutes at the 4 (and there will be the four-guard lineup, too). Layssaard, Tertsea and Berry are competing to back up Cyril. Let's see who steps up.

I'm thinking it will vary. I wouldn't be surprised to see two guards, Langevine, Preston/Akelle, and Tertsea at timeswhen circumstances warrant.

Re: We're talking about practice...
I can almost guarantee that will never happen, unless we have multiple injuries to the back court. We will have 3 guards on the court at all times, and sometimes 4. You couldn't even run an offense with those 5 guys on the court, 3 of which cannot put the ball on the floor. Add to that the fact that we have 6 legit guards -- EC, Terrell, Dowtin, Jarvis, Robinson, Fatts are going to get a lot of burn. As they should.KevanBoyles wrote:I'm thinking it will vary. Have to chime in and say that Thompson is more than a legit guard. I would argue he isn't the worst guard on the team or among the worst.
Thompson is right there with the best of URI.

Not saying that you're wrong. But keep your mind open to the possibilities. Particularly when we're playing against a much bigger team.bigappleram wrote:I can almost guarantee that will never happen, unless we have multiple injuries to the back court. We could play a team of all 8 footers, and I think there will be 3 guards on the floor. We should play to our strength.

For a much too long time, expectations were the best thing URI hoops had going for it. March-2017 made that no longer the case.

An I missing something? I looked at the video of the team at practice. Andre Berry looks the same. Unless I saw the wrong guy.
