I was just thinking about Rhode Island's last six NCAA appearances (1988-2017). I hadn't realized just hard it was to oust URI in the first round game. Rhody won its first game in four (1988, 1993, 1998, & 2017) of its last six appearances. The two tourneys (1997 & 1999) where the Rams did not advance were OT losses. Rhody had the better seed only twice in those six appearances with both being an 8 seed (8vs9 is typically considered a toss-up). URI, for the most part, has really outperformed its seeding in this period to compile a tournament record of 7-6. Rhody has ousted a #1, #3, #6 (2x), #9 (2x), and #13 seed. The Rams have never lost to an opponent with a worse seeding in their last six NCAA tournaments.
