Game #35: Oregon (NCAA Tournnment Rd of 32) - Sun March 19

Unread post by Native »

Having successfully held off Creighton in the St Patrick's Day opening round game, the University of Rhode Island advances in Sacramento to face the Oregon Ducks on Sunday 19-March-2017.

The Oregon Ducks men's basketball team is an intercollegiate basketball program that competes in the NCAA Division I and is a member of the Pac-12 Conference, representing the University of Oregon.

Conference: Pacific-12 Conference
Location: Eugene, OR
Colors: Electric Lightning Yellow, Electric Night Green,
Head coach: Dana Altman

Born in Nebraska, Dana Altman played his college basketball at Fairbury Junior College (now Southeast Community College) in Fairbury, Nebraska, where in 1978 he earned an associate degree in business administration. He then received his undergraduate degree in Business at Eastern New Mexico University in 1980.

Altman started his head coaching career in 1989 at Marshall, and then was at Kansas State for four years. Coach Altman then spent 16 years coaching at Creighton, including seven trips to the NCAA Tournament, before being hired by Oregon in 2010.

The Ducks are 154-64 under Altman in six seasons and have advanced to five consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

Last year during the 2015-16 season, the Ducks won the Pac-12 title and a program-record 31 games, while reaching for the first time in a decade the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Heading into the 2016-17 season, Oregon were returning four starters from the previous year's team that had ended their season at the hands of the Oklahoma Sooners in the Elite Eight. They were also slotted to add for the 2016-17 season valuable pieces like Dylan Ennis, Payton Pritchard and Kavell Bigby-Williams.

It was not surprising to the Oregon faithful, therefore, when the Ducks were ranked fifth in the AP preseason Top 25 poll. Nor was it surprising when the University of Oregon trustees in early November-2016 approved a contract extension for men's basketball coach Dana Altman that pays him in total $18.45 million through April 2023. Altman's new deal ties him for third highest-paid coach in the Pac-12, and places him among the nation's top 20 highest paid coaches.

This year, after starting 2-2 in the regular season, Oregon went 27-2 before losing to then-#7 Arizona in the PAC-12 championship. And then on Friday, St Patrick's Day, the Ducks dispatched Iona in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Accordingly, Oregon comes into their round-of-32 game against Rhode Island on Sunday with a 30-5 record (16-2 in Pac-12 play). The Ducks are 17-0 at home, 7-3 away, and 6-2 at neutral sites.

Although it is a day-long drive from Oregon to Sacramento, the fervent fans of 3-seed Oregon are expected to be well represented at Sunday's game in Sacamento. In addition to those making the journey south, there are more than 2,000 Oregon alums living in the Sacramento area.

And then there is the Oregon colors. The Oregon Ducks have their uniform contract with Nike, which is located in Beaverton, Oregon. The folks at Nike seemingly spare no cost to find ways to surprise with the threads they design for the Ducks' athletic teams. The Oregon uniforms do not actually glow in the dark; it is just that the colors are so bright that you kind of expect them to.

So who are the players in those flashy Nike uniforms? The Oregon roster (with probable starters in bold) is as follows:
  • Evan Gross (5-10 165) junior walk-on who is a new guy on the Oregon roster this year. Plays so infrequently that, when he does get sent in during a game, the Ducks' play-by-play announcer has to scramble to figure out who he is.
  • Charlie Noebel (6-2 178) senior walk-on from Irvine, California. Practice player who may get a minute or two in a blow-out game.
  • Dylan Ennis (6-2 195) sixth-year guard from Brampton, Ontario, Canada; at the age of 25, he is the oldest player in the NCAA Tournament this year. The Canadian baller started his Division 1 career at Rice, but after one season he transferred from Rice to Villanova, sitting out a year under the NCAA transfer rules. Then in the summer of 2015, after two years at Nova, he transferred from Villanova to Oregon and was granted immediate eligibility under the NCAA's graduate transfer rule. Ennis had averaged nearly 10 points a game during his last season at Villanova and hoped to find a better niche as a true point guard in Dana Altman's system. Unfortunately, the talented point guard missed all but two games last season due to a broken foot. Fortunately for Ennis and for the Ducks, he was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA on 30-June-2016. This season Dylan Ennis is the Ducks' point guard, and has started all 35 games for the Ducks while averaging 11 points, 4+ rebounds, and 3.1 assists. An experienced player capable of getting a tough basket inside when needed, his normally good three-point shooting was less than stellar during the Pac-12 tournament, which saw him hit just 2 of 11 shots from outside.
  • Payton Pritchard (6-2 200) freshman guard from West Linn, Oregon. The freshman and Oregon native has worked his way into a starting role. Good shooting and ball-handling skills. He had 18 points and 3 steals against Iona.
  • Casey Benson (6-3 185) junior guard from Tempe, Arizona. Benson used to start until Pritchard sent him to the sidelines. A good three-point shooter who rarely turns the ball over, Benson provides the proverbial "spark" off the bench. He struggled with his shot in the Pac-12 tournament, though, going 1 of 6 from the outside.
  • Tyler Dorsey (6-4 195) sophomore guard from Los Angeles, who for the season is averaging 13+ points per game. A torrid shooter, during the three games that he played in the Pac-12 tournament, the sophomore recorded totals of 21, 23, and 23 points. He did so not only by hitting threes, but also by driving inside with consistency. On Friday against Iona, Dorsey continued his scoring ways, recording 24 points in the opening round victory.
  • Keith Smith (6-7 205) freshman forward from Seattle. The kid has had knee problems for most of the Pac-12 season. He saw 6 minutes against Iona, and may see some minutes on Sunday against Rhody, but is unlikely to contribute much.
  • Dillon Brooks (6-7 225) junior forward from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Last season as a sophomore, he led Oregon in scoring. Over last summer, he suffered a broken foot and underwent surgery, missing the team's preseason trip to Spain, as well as the early part of the non-conference schedule. Despite the slow start, he is now once again the Oregon leading scorer, averaging 16+ points per game, shooting the trey with a healthy 40% consistency. He is also a strong rebounder. Recently awarded the Pac-12 player of the year, Brooks is the heart of this Oregon team. However, should in the game with Rhode Island Brooks pick up fouls early like he did in the Pac-12 tournament, the Ducks could be in trouble.
  • Jordan Bell (6-9 225) junior forward from Long Beach, California. Leading rebounder for Oregon, averaging 8 rpg and 10 ppg. A good shot blocker and strong on the boards, he is more than capable of scoring but not so much from the outside. Against Iona, he had a strong double-double, racking 17 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Paul White (6-9 235) junior forward from Chicago. The transfer from Georgetown is sitting out the 2016-2017 season, in compliance with NCAA transfer regulations.
  • Chris Boucher (6-10 200) senior forward from Montreal, Québec, Canada; he was granted a sixth year of eligibility in March-2016. Oregon's shot-swatting specialist, Boucher has averaged this season 2.5 blocks, 6 rebounds, and almost 12 points per game. Unfortunately for Oregon's NCAA Tournament chances, Boucher is out with an ACL injury incurred in the Pac-10 Tournament semi-final game against Cal, and so Sunday, against Rhody, Chris Boucher will remain on the bench.
  • M.J. Cage (6-10 225) freshman forward from Santa Ana, California. Son of former NBA power forward Michael Cage. A concussion and a knee injury during pre-season practice led to young Cage taking a red-shirt this year. The conventional wisdom at the time of the red-shirt decision was that Coach Altman usually goes with two bigs on the court, and with Jordan Bell, Chris Boucher, and Kavell Bigy-Williams available this year to rotate in those spots, there would be few minutes available for freshman Cage anyway.
  • Roman Sorkin (6-10 225) junior forward from Ashdod, Israel. With Chris Boucher out with the ACL injury, Sorkin may came in periodically to give the other bigs a breather, especially if they get into foul trouble. And here is a surprise -- he is excellent from the charity stripe and has shot 48 percent from three this season.
  • Kavell Bigby-Williams (6-11 230) junior forward from London, England. Although Bigby-Williams will likely on Sunday get the bulk of what would have been Boucher's minutes, Bigby-Williams is not the same player as Chris Boucher. In particular, Bigby-Williams just cannot play the same offensive role as Boucher. Also, Bigby-Williams runs hot and cold on foul shots; he was 1 of 5 from the line in the Pac-12 tournament. At his best, Bigby-Williams can on rebound and block shots on defense and throw down hard on offense; at his worst, well, we'll see on Sunday.

Although Coach Altman is working with an eight or nine person rotation, the strength of the Oregon team is its athleticism and positional skill. When Oregon needs to go big, they have Jordan Bell and Kavell Bigby-Williams. But Coach Altman can also opt to go small, which Oregon is just as capable of doing, given the guys they have that can handle the ball in the front- or back- court. While I am guessing that Coach Altman will initially go "big" against Rhody, no matter who is on the court for the Ducks, their defense-to-offense transition is silky smooth and effortlessly fast.

In half-court sets, Oregon tends to run a spread offense, so-called because it spreads the other team out, with the intent of ultimately shredding the opposing defense. Designed to encourage floor spacing, the Oregon spread offense facilitates cuts to the basket. On Sunday, Rhody will be hard-pressed to counter Oregon's offensive flexibility.

Defensively as a team, the Ducks play aggressively: they effectively steal balls and block shots. Whether in man or in match-up zone, Coach Altman on defense likes his guards to extend the defense, knowing the Oregon big men have their backs.

Look --- I know the media analysts all seem to have swallowed Hurley's "gritty and resilient" Kool-Aid, but even without Chris Boucher, Oregon is more than capable of dismantling Rhode Island. Here's hoping the bright lights of the Left Coast do not blind the 21st Century kids from Kingston.

What's so nice to see, is that us old folks get to relive success after 18 long years....

Also, the younger set gets to see for the first time and firsthand, what all the fuss is about......

Wherever Blue Man is, it must be wild......he was 12 when Rhody last went dancing.......very happy for him and of course everyone else.

Oregon has a top 10 RPI. One of the best teams in the country. With that being said, can't wait to watch Hass swat Dillon Brooks into the 3rd row at the buzzer as URI advances to the Sweet 16.

Was having a conversation about the tournament in one of my classes earlier this week (high school). My teacher is a huge PC fan, so me telling him that URI was unquestionably the best team in Rhode Island was enough to get him agitated. Wonder if him and all the other PC fans enjoyed watching us POUND a Big East team while shooting terribly!

From the Oregonian...
I liked that Oregon didn't allow Washington to be a distraction. Every postseason journey has unique obstacles. For the Ducks, this Iona College thing was like steering around a series of potholes. The challenges will get much tougher. There's Sunday's second round game against the football team from Rhode Island, then, if necessary, possible headaches named "Louisville" and "Kansas."

Rhode Island is big. Points in the paint won't come as easily on Sunday. But that's getting ahead of ourselves.

I personally find it disgusting and would never recite the lyrics...thought what was posted was offensive...but that's just me...to each his own I suppose. On the other hand...it was written to get people to sing it and the "artist" could probly give a ratsy by who...and if he didn't want white people to sing it, should have said so, or better yet, not written such divisive garbage. It's not worth debating this weekend. I'd rather have people feel welcome and participate in the discussion. I was just sharing something here that I was enjoying offline, it reminded me of this team's journey. I've been doing that for the last several weeks, so figured I'd keep it going. Was not thinking about the explicit language in the songs because I've just never been bothered by that. I get not everyone feels the same way. I don't want anyone to be bothered by it, so I deleted it. Let's move on to what we should be talking about.

Back to the task at hand.

I'm sick of the Oregon story. Its been Dillon Brooks yelling and celebrating for what feels like years now.

Its time for URI to end that.

Everyone is very impressed with URI on ESPN this morning but thinking Oregon will win. I think it is a bit closer than that. Playing Iona was like Oregon playing on the court by themselves.

Also, DH doesn't approach the Frank Martin world. Martin routinely chews guys out on national television.

Been saying it for a while, but Martin is my odds on favorite to be the next guy to go "Woody Hayes" on national TV. Not sure if it'll be his player, an opponent, or a ref...I just think it's going to happen...the guy just flat out looks dangerous and demented.

Yeah I never thought that white people liking music made by black people was a problem in 2017. Just like I don't think people of any race liking whatever they like is a problem. Just like I also don't know why something like that is being brought up on a basketball message board. But what do I know?

Well I do know Dillon Brooks is a beast. Thankfully we have some beasts of our own who can D up. KI loves a challenge. Ennis and Dorsey will have to deal with Jared and Stan a lot, also an EC who has really come on strong defensively.

I like the fact that they're (I assume) going to play more of an outside game without Boucher when they are running the second unit. Brooks only plays 24 minutes a game. Boucher also averages 24 a game. That's a lot of minutes to make up for. I like our chances in a game like that if it's their 3 point shooting against our defense. They have athletes at another level so we're going to need to play better than we did against Creighton.

The other things we have in our favor:

They played Iona who plays an o'le defense: a lot of Oregon just running up and down the floor with little resistance. They weren't tested really, maybe our toughness will catch them off guard.

On a second game in 3 days, they have 1 less player in their rotation. From the looks they'll be leaning a lot on a 6 man rotation. Will be interesting to see how they respond and if we can wear them out a bit.

We are ROLLING. This confidence is so contagious we shot about 90% on over THIRTY free throws. We're also loose. I could see it on Danny's face before the game. I could see it on all their faces after the game. The moment isn't too big for them.

LETS GOOOOO

Don't want to think about anyone named Drake this weekend. A drake is a male duck.

I've a\watched Oregon play many times this season.
Never seen them play only 6 people.
Brooks' minutes per game are skewed ,because he was on limited
minutes when he came back from his injury.
Without Boucher, they took a great Arizona team to the wire
in the PAC12 tourney.

I'm just going off of what I saw from their minute distribution. It seems like they were running a 7 man rotation primarily. At best it will probably stay that way.

Ennis - 31, Dorsey - 29, Bell - 28, Pritchard - 28, Brooks - 24, Bouchard - 24, Benson -21.

No one else averages more than 10. Bigby-WIlliams averages 9.8 minutes and contributes 3 and 3. He's a "junior" but played his first 2 seasons at a juco. Looking at his game log he only played big minutes in blowout games. 14 and 15 in the last 2 without Boucher.

Brooks played more than 30 minutes 8 times this season - 2 since the injury.

We have 10 players averaging more than 10 minutes, and we've been using a 9 man rotation pretty much down the stretch.

Jared - 30, EC - 29, Hass - 26, KI - 25, Jarvis - 22, Dowtin - 22, Stan - 18, Langevine - 13, Akele - 13.

Legs are a difference maker. Also don't discount the immediate "play for him" factor that could've happened at half time after the injury. They've played and planned for 1 game without him against an irrelevant team. I'm not saying Oregon isn't a phenomenal team that would've been a 1 or 2 seed with the guy, but losing a key cog like that will have an impact.

If you say you’re a Rhody fan, I know you are my brother. For you have suffered as I have suffered.

One concern is EC went back to the locker room for a couple minutes in the second half to stretch his right knee which he said was stiff. Hopefully there are no ill effects tomorrow

Don't underestimate the value of a loose team playing with a shit ton of confidence. It carried us in 98 and for the first time all year you can see the swag on each kid's face. They don't want to stop playing and feel they can play with anyone. It also helps when almost every pundit thinks the same bc these kids read that stuff.

Speaking of confidence, Dowtin's must be sky high after scoring 23.

Looking back, the Fordham loss might be the best thing that happened to this team. I read somewhere that Dan mentions that game to the team before every game since.

Really good write-up on the challenge of tomorrow's game. If you're still riding a high and aren't ready for a dose of reality, maybe don't click through?

Props to Xavier, since I (and many others, I'm sure) thought they were overrated heading into the tournament.

Told the team today "a win tomorrow will change your life forever." He speaks from experience on that one (Kansas). Go Rhody!

Yes we're all keaneyblue over here!
I think the song sucks. I just don't like Drake, but we did start from the BOTTOM now we are here....

Anyways!

How the hell are we going to guard Dillon Brooks???
The irony is that I don't like Drake either.

Im curious about who gets Brooks also because his size presents a real problem to our guards. I assume that overall we are going to be hard to score against, even though I'm sure they will get theirs. The big thing I worry about playing a team like this with elite size and athleticism is holding up on the glass and not letting them get second and third opportunities. If we can rebound and limit them to one shot I think we can hang in the game, and if we can combine that with a great game from one or two of our guards (including improved 3-pt shooting from last time out), then we could win it.

X is going on a run now after they struggled after their star went down

The Oregon injury happened only a couple games ago so they are newly adjusting to play without him so that helps URI

Oregon assistant coach Mike Mennenga who was ranked one of the top recruiting assistant coaches in the country earlier this year was an assistant coach for 2 years at Canisius College under CFL. He also spent a year on Keno Davis' staff at Providence and is the main pipeline of Oregon guys from Canada.
