Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
great to see him doing well, loved watching that trio back in our last run, id like to think with preston's ability to penetrate he was a bit underrated during his time here, maybe i am remembering wrong but i always loved his as a player.

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
Preston and Antonio Reynolds-Dean probably played during the best four year run ever for URI basketball. Every team they played on won 20 or more games and played in the postseason. They helped win the first A-10 Championship for the school their senior season during an era when the league was stronger than today. Their last three seasons at URI resulted in NCAA appearances.
PM and ARD Career at URI
1995-1996 20-14 (NIT 3rd Rnd 2-1)
1996-1997 20-10 (NCAA 1st Rnd 0-1)
1997-1998 25-9 (NCAA Elite-8 3-1)
1998-1999 20-13 (NCAA 1st Rnd 0-1)

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
Murphy is one of my all time favorite Rams and a huge key to that late 90s era. I only wish we were able to keep him from moving on to BC (and then to Creighton). If Hurley were to move on some day, I would hope Murphy would be considered and interviewed for the opening. But I also hope that discussion is several years away.

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
I think many players playing against their alma mater have an easier time.
He has so many ties to every level of this. He has to be ok with the outcome regardless even pulling for URI.
EC he recruited and sold him on Preston's own story! He was a player! A coach! A friend to a coach he played with! and then he coached with the coach!
It has to be rare to have this much entanglement.

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
PMurph once hit 8-9 3s at Temple.
He left here as the number 3 player in
3 pointers.
He had 1,218 career points, playing with
Mobley, Wheeler, and Odom, getting the lion's
share of shots.
Very underrated player.

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
A real eye opener, while looking at stats was Silk Owens'
46.2% from 3 for his four year career.
Tommy Garrick was 44.4%.
No wonder why they were the best backcourt in
modern URI history.
762 and 718 points in 1987-88. Both over 20.0-ppg.

If Dan leaves, Murph is my first choice to be his successor. I don't think I'm alone.

Silk could do it all on the offensive end. Plus he was one tough SOB. He has to be the best guard we've ever had.rodfromcranston wrote:A real eye opener, while looking at stats was Silk Owens'

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
Silk played his entire career with a
bullet in his arm.
Fought with Ramon Rivas of Temple, who was a
huge hulk.
Backed down from nothing.
So cool, that on the bus ride to play Syracuse in
the NCAA, he was sleeping.

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
Rumor has it that during the Syracuse game, someone on 'Cuse asked Silk while take a foul shot when he'd get his tooth fixed (he had a broken tooth from Rivas). His response, "Right after we win this game."rodfromcranston wrote:Silk played his entire career with a

Silk was ..... well Silk! Penders turned TG into an absolute monster. What a pair. There was "the pass" down at GW remember? On every channel highlight reel! TG 50 at the Rack. Damn that team really had sick firepower!
I was blessed to have season tix right on the lower pullout benches at Keaney where URI ran into the court during that era into the mid 90's. (yeah I knew a guy ha ha!) some magical teams with great personalities - I sure hope we can keep the fire burning on this new era of URI hoops!

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
I really loved Murph as a player. He was the perfect guy to come off the bench in 98 then start on a NCAA team in 99
Boy both those 88 and 98 backcourts were really fun to watch. Silk and Tommy G were perfect compliments and TYSOn and Cuttino were outstanding too

Having 2 starting caliber PGs on your roster is a key if you want to make any sort of run.reef wrote:I really loved Murph as a player. He was the perfect guy to come off the bench in 98 then start on a NCAA team in 99

Re: Nice Article on Preston Murphy
Silk Owens never had a backup PG.
That team was 2 points from the Elite 8.
Preston was really a small combo guard.
He played point in 1998-99 by default,
and did a good job.
Tip Vinson was rated the number 2 PG in the Northeast
coming in, but turned out to be a bust.
Zach Marbury was declared ineligible by the
NCAA clearing house.
It was PMurph and that was it during that year.

Yep, lost to Duke once again by one point. That was the Danny Ferry team.
