A-10 Champs - This Weekend

Unread post by bigappleram »

This weekend, our team and coach answered every criticism levied upon them this season...almost point by point, in the way they performed under the brightest lights and biggest pressures, this team delivered.

1.) Offensive Efficiency - not sure what our O-PPP were for the weekend but they had to be pretty good. I can count on 1 hand the number of mistakes or bonehead plays made on offensive end in 120 minutes of action. We shot it lights out, got the ball to Hass plenty, and attacked the rim to earn points from the stripe. We had 8 TO's in the championship game against a team renowned for their ability to turn teams over.

2.) Can we make foul shots when it matters? Yep.

3.) What about a zone, coach? At a few points this weekend we played zone, including a good stretch yesterday. It was effective and saved KI and Hass when we needed them on the floor.

4.) What is our identity? Do we have a leader? It was critical to our success that our two veterans and alphas (EC and Hass) took the reigns of this team and this weekend that finally happened. While Hass has held up his end of the bargain all season, it was EC who really took center stage this weekend and showed what an offensive talent he is and how much more dangerous we are when he is on his game. Smart decision making with the ball, hunting shots but hunting the right shots, and catching fire from 3. He had at least 2 NBA worthy moves this weekend, the spin move and finish with the right over Hamdy and the step back 3 with the shot clock winding down. That kid deserves the media attention he will get in the build up to Friday.

5.) Quality depth - check. Stan, Cyril, our Freshman PG, Nikola and Jarvis all contributed major minutes and positive stats that speak to the ability for Dan to go 8,9 deep and not lose a lot.

6.) Style of play - what were we sold in the preseason? Dan talked about an explosive offensive team coupled with an elite defensive team...59, 60 and 63 points against through 3 games, and an in-your-face defense that looked "elite" at times - check. On top of that, an uptempo and open offensive attack with numerous contributors led by our alphas EC, Hass and Terrell.

Now it's on to Sacramento...we won't see Boogie, but we will be Dancing. Go Rhody!!

Good Post BAR.
One event that impressed with Hurley this weekend. Iverson threw the ball in after a basket and the Ref moved out of the way of the pass. Pass should have gone to Dowtin but rolled out of bounds and we lost possession. Hurley took KI out after that play, said a few things to him calmly, then put him back in the game quickly. He did not yell at him, berate or try to embarrass him but was calm. Plus putting right back in said a lot. It helped KI to get over the mistake quickly and respectably.

Then yesterday I saw us, after VCU scored, our guy took the ball and threw it on the base line to the Ref, Ref threw it right back and we threw the ball in.
Both were after scored baskets by the opposition.

Should the Ref in the KI situation have caught the ball and given it back to him? I'm sure the Ref was going by the rules but why yesterday did the Ref catch and throw back?

BAR, he really has changed thru the course of this year. The switch to a zone 2 or 3 times in big games has been a sign of that. He also tightened up his rotation. Plus he got the team to start attacking the hoop with drives. He also kept himself calm, even when he got the violation yesterday, he didn't lose it (though he got close!). He's growing as a coach for sure. we know the offers will be coming. He deserves all the credit he gets.

Nice post BAR agree with everything

I hope KI can avoid foul trouble , Akele scares me a little against physical teams he is outmatched, I don't want him in for more than a few minutes
