Completing the evening's results:

Marist made great effort, but was edged by Canisius, 77-73 in the opening round of the MAAC tournament at Albany, NY.

In an exciting finish, Old Dominion beat UTEP, 62-61. Holding a 61-60 lead UTEP committed a shooting foul with one second left and Zoran Talley of ODU put in two FT's for the win. UTEP earlier had missed two FT's which would have given the Miners a three point lead with 19 seconds left.

RR02,
Since you started this tracking and bubble teams are 58-47, what is your opinion based on what you thought you might see? To me there are more losses than I would have expected from teams on the bubble with a lot to play for.
Bubbles are winning 55%.
What is our record since you began tracking?
I also think a disastrous loss like California had to Utah should be considered more negatively than if Cal had lost by 2 in OT. What do you think?

No A-10 games on Friday.

In action involving URI OOC opponents, two games, both in the Ivy League are scheduled;

Columbia at Brown. 7 PM. On ESPN3.

Dartmouth at Penn. 7 PM.

Tonight sees the opening of conference tournaments in the Horizon, Colonial, Southern, and West Coast conferences which brings to 13 the number of tournaments now underway.

It looks like the first day I started tracking games was 1/17. Took a week and a half off after Fordham and I think there might have been another loss that I stopped for a bit after, but otherwise that's a pretty solid sample of how bubble teams have done in conference. URI is 9-3 during this same stretch of time. Yes, the A10 is weaker this year, but to me this is a key stat that shows why the Baron 2.0 thread never made sense. We've gotten better as the year's gone on, that's not a one time deal under Hurley, and it's a stark contrast to our previous coach. Hopefully it's enough a week from Sunday.

I started tracking bubble teams for two reasons. One, they became our main competition, probably even more important than our previous/upcoming opponents, not to throw shade on Obadiah's great work. Two, I think people on this board gave too much credit to how good bubble teams were and underrated how we fit in the conversation. That's not surprising, we've had an unacceptably long tournament drought and it's easier to pick apart a team you focus on. I was trying to inject some facts and hopefully a more positive opinion. There's a reason teams are on the bubble. If a good team kept winning, they wouldn't be a bubble team, they'd be in. So I expected more losses than people on here were portraying in their posts. That said, I'd be lying if I told you I thought the record would be this poor. Maybe it always is and people don't track it enough to notice, but I think it's more likely a function of the weak bubble this year.

And absolutely, every team loses, but getting curbstomped by 30 is inexcusable with your season on the line. Cal is probably going to be able to point right at last night if they don't dance

In today's bubble action:

Last four in Seton Hall is at #13 Butler at 2:30
Last four in Vanderbilt hosts #12 Florida at 2 on ESPN
We're second to last in
Last in Illinois State plays Southern Illinois at 3:30 on CBS Sports
First out California is at Colorado at 2
Second out Kansas State hosts Texas Tech at 1
Third out Illinois is at Rutgers on ESPNU. Rutgers is out to a quick 7-3 lead 3:30 in
Fourth out TCU is at Oklahoma at 3
Fifth out Wake Forest is at Virginia Tech at 4:30

Obviously we went carnage to the other bubble teams, but Illinois State losing would be especially helpful. Two teams getting in from the Missouri Valley shrinks the bubble

In today's bubble action:

Last in Illinois State plays #21 Wichita State in the Missouri Valley championship game on CBS. Wichita State leads 16-11 with 12:00 left in the first half. A Wichita State win would be very helpful.

It shouldn't matter really based on both of their weak sos and lack of top 50/100 wins...but Wichita state on the bubble scares me more than Illinois State. Would at least cross someone off the list for sure.

Wichita now up 69-51 with 3:50 to go. Granted this is the first time I've seen Illinois State, but they don't pass the eye test at all. Losing big and losing their composure in front of a crowd that wasn't exactly hostile towards them. Yeah, they dominated their schedule, but their schedule was weak. They don't deserve an at large bid over us
