Week #17 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

In both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll just released, no A-10 teams are in the rankings. In the AP poll, Dayton gets 39 votes and VCU gets 2 votes. Dayton also gets 15 votes in the USA Today poll and VCU gets 1 vote.

The loss to UCF caused Cincinnati to tumble to #18 in AP poll and #20 in USA Today poll. Duke had its 7 game win streak snapped with losses to Syracuse and Miami, and the Blue Devils plunged 7 spots to #17 in the AP poll and is #14 in the USA Today poll. No other URI OOC opponents are in the rankings or getting votes.

Gonzaga suffered a surprise loss to BYU on its home court and lost its #1 ranking as Kansas moves into the top spot in both polls.

The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 206-139, a winning percentage of .597, stable from the previous week.

The past week's road win over La Salle and a top 50 win over VCU brought about an improvement in the key measurements. URI is moving closer to being back on the bubble, but the Rams still need to run the table in the regular season and then perform well in the A-10's.

Davidson leads St. Bonaventure at the half, 29-26. Davidson has led from the opening tip and built the lead to 14, but the Bonnies came on strong in the closing minutes of the half to narrow the deficit significantly. The Bonnies need to win here to keep their slim chance for a bye alive.

And seton hall wins 62-59 in a HORRIBLE game.
Georgetown is garbage and seton hall is garbage except for Angel Delgado.

The Hoyas played incredibly bad in the last 1:30 of the game.
They got one shot and it was at the end of the game and it went over the backboard.
They gave up two offensive rebounds.
Fouled a three point shooter and turned the ball over twice in the same possession.

Kentucky better beat Vanderbilt.
A team has never made the the tournament as an at-large with 15 losses.
So the closer these bubble teams get to that number the better our chances as long as we keep winning.

I believe with the Bonnies loss to Davidson, URI is now assured of a bye for the A-10 tourney. Even in the worst case case scenario - URI loses its remaining two game and Bonnies win their remaining two - both teams would finish with 11-7 marks and URI gets the nod because the tiebreaker is the Rams win over the Bonnies.

There is lots of A-10 action on Wednesday in addition to the URI at Saint Joseph's game at 7 PM.

Duquesne at George Mason. 7 PM.

George Washington at Fordham. 7 PM.

Richmond at UMass. 7 PM.

VCU at Dayton. 8 PM. On CBSSN.

La Salle at Saint Louis. 8 PM.

There is no action among URI OOC opponents.

Some other bubble games of note:

Georgia at Auburn
Michigan at Northwestern
Marquette at Xavier.

Tonight also sees the beginning of conference tournaments for the Northeast Conference, America East Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference. This brings to six the number of conferences that have their tourneys underway this week.

Man I am such a big fan of the deep ball. This URI group never looks for it - tho Dowtin did hit Hass with a nice half court pass tonight.

Pollard off the floor with 4 fouls hopefully the Richmond area Rams can make a move here!!

We need favorites to win low D1 and mid major tournaments also to feel comfortable.

It's almost too much to keep track of. Obadiah's weekly threads are a huge help and are much appreciated.

Northwestern, a school that has never gone to the NCAA ,looks to be a team of destiny this year as they beat Michigan 67-65. With 1.7 seconds left they inbounded the ball on a perfect full court pass to their big guy who laid it in.

Everyone rooting for Richmond and VCU tonight. AM I the only one that wants Dayton as the 1 seed and URI as the 4? I feel like we need to beat them in the semis to have the best chance at an at large. Also the 4 seed means we play Bonnie's which would be a much better win for the resume then whoever finishes 6th in the A10. Also for selfish reasons I want the 4 seed so I can get out of work early and start drinking at 2

Nope. Couldn't make a shot in the last minute....VCU had their chances......

You know you could make a case that we deserve a bid over VCU......especially if we could have played and beat them in the A10T semi.

They were gifted those 2 wins against St. Bona and GW.....if those were losses I think we would have the edge on them for the 2nd A10 bid.

Even if they lose to GM [which they won't], Richmond isn't going to lose to St. Louis, so we're getting Dayton on Sat. if we win Fri.

Also, what happens if Richmond plays VCU in the semis and beats them? If we make the final and lose to Richmond, we're likely out, unless the committee picks us over VCU.....the A10 isn't getting 4 in no how no way.

Summarizing Wednesday action in the A-10:

George Mason edged Duquesne, 63-62. The Dukes made a strong effort and led the Patriots by as much as eight points in second half. GMU took a lead at the 8 minute mark and the game was close to the end. Duquesne is now 1-11 in road games.

George Washington beat Fordham, 67-66. Great comeback by the Colonials as they overcame a 16 point second half deficit. GW's Tyler Cavanaugh was fouled on a three point attempt with 0.7 seconds left and converted all three FT's to seal the win..

Richmond wins at UMass, 75-64. UMass totally collapsed in this one as the Spiders erased a 11 point deficit to end first half and began the second with a 13-2 run. UMass went almost 9 minutes without a bucket. With the loss UMass, with one of best recruiting classes in the A-10, is practically assured a losing season. The natives are getting restless with Coach Kellogg as a sparse Senior Night crowd of 2,434 showed up.

Dayton beats VCU, 79-72. The win gives the Flyers the regular season A-10 crown and top seed in tourney. Dayton led through out this game, but VCU put on a furious rally to close to within two with 3 minutes in game. The Flyers held their composure by hitting five of six FT's in the closing seconds

La Salle collapsed at Saint Louis losing 70-55. SLU now has six conference wins, larger than their fans would have predicted earlier. With a very good incoming class, the Billikens future prospects are looking up.

If we get Dayton, it had better not come down to the last minute.......they are easily the best of the A10 when it comes to the close ones.

Of course we made it possible the last time by clanking FT's.......

Talk about a potential bid stealer: The Fucking UConn Huskies....they get their conference tourney at the XL Center in Hartford.

I don't think they are capable of running the table this year with all of their injuries.....but I'll bet Cincy remembers their loss to UConn when that kid threw in that 70 footer at the buzzer to force OT.......
