There are also other extraneous benefits to being a Nike school over being an Adidas school that Adidas can't provide.

For instance....

Not one A10 school in this tournament (2 former - Xavier and Butler).

At the time this was negotiated both actually were members of the A10. I'm not sure if this announcement came before or after both teams announced they would be joining the new Big East, though.

Dan is certainly making the rounds. He was on the college sports channel on SIRIUSXM this afternoon. I missed the beginning, but they didn't address job vacancies. Dan did not sound like he wanted to be anywhere but URI.

I didn't go through all the coaches but I didn't see that as alternate revenue in other coaches salaries. I guess the point is there are lots of ways to pay a coach, if one of the ways URI is paying its coach is allowing him to take some money off the top of a sneaker deal and giving him the flexibility to negotiate those deals for the bball team that seems like a potentially valuable thing to a coach.

The better the results on the floor the better the shoe deal, the more the coach gets paid!
This may be a dumb question, but could a personal services contract with Adidas prevent Dan from working at schools that are sponsored by other shoe companies while he's still under that personal services contract?

No, he would just breach that one as well (if the new school was not an adidas school) and the new school would pay his buyout to adidas (or maybe the shoe company affiliated with the new school would pick it up) just like they'd pay URI for his breach of contract with us.

Last night when someone said that the Dan Hurley events were going to be sponsored by the Alumni Association I went to their website and saw an event listed for 4/12 with him in Providence. I didn't post it then because I have a hard time sometimes posting things like that from my phone. Today it doesn't seem to be on the website any longer.

Here's the link to the event : http://www.alumni.uri.edu/s/1638/02-alu ... &scontid=0

It definitely doesn't seem like it's sold out (9 people registered online), but it's definitely not on the calendar listing.

The latest update suggested it could be between Hurley and Ewing, although maybe Randy Bennett from St. Mary's is thrown in there for good measure.

I emailed Christina Haas to ask what the scope of this invitation was supposed to be, as in what donor level is necessary to attend. Given the venue, I would imagine it's for Silver/Golden Ram and higher.

I wanted to share this post from their board today and see what our fans thought about it:
hoyabinx wrote:Here is why I prefer Hurley to the remaining options:

As others pointed out, Hurley’s teams improved dramatically under KenPom’s objective criteria in his first year and have trended upward quickly from there. Here are his KenPom ranks:

Wagner
2010 (pre-Hurley): 336
2011: 228
2012: 101

Rhode Island
2012 (pre-Hurley): 225
2013: 193
2014: 115
2015: 61
2016: 82 (lost his PG and best player pre-season)
2017: 35

This improvement means he is a pretty good in-game coach. That likely results in him having a high "floor." In other words, our teams would be fine regardless of whether he can recruit top talent because he is a really good tactician.

Now, where his "last name" comes into play is recruiting. He already recruits the East Coast so he knows the region well (unlike, say, Bennett who is also a good in-game coach). Combine his in-game coaching with the increased visibility that Georgetown gives him for recruiting, and that likely means he has a very high "ceiling" as a coach too.

Let’s not pretend this isn’t a bit of guesswork. But when you look at all the variables, Hurley has the least overall downside risk of any candidate mentioned outside of Smart and Brey (who we’re told have politely declined). And I’d argue he has the most upside as well when looking at quantifiable data.

The poster reasons that the improved standing of the program as years went by was attributable to good-in-game coaching:

This improvement means he is a pretty good in-game coach.

I would argue the improvement had far more to do with getting better talent and it maturing and gaining experience as time went on.

OK, everyone. Let's scramble to the SECRET part of the board where no Hoyas can see you.

What up Hoya fans? If you want to honor your school's legacy, think this should be your next coach - probably would be the best recruiter in the history of college basketball (plus he might need the money):

Sorry, anytime I get a chance to kill five minutes at work looking at old school AI photos, I do it. It is almost like porn for me. Also, I may have just bought an AI throwback Georgetown jersey on eBay

I fully support this turning into an AI thread.

But in case it doesn't, did VCU really hire Jimmy (son of Phil) Martelli as their DBO? Jimmy "Baby Rice" Martelli? I do believe in second chances. I would also not love this hire for my program.

Asking what I think about it, here goes:

I wish I had thought of this kind of comparison in the past. It is objective and from a respective ratings entity in Ken Pom
Wagner: Solid improvement from a bottom or the barrel 336 to 228 to 101. Fast progress to get to a very respectable 101 ranking
URI: Quick improvement from 225 to 193 to 115 to 81 to a small blip to 82 the a big improvement to 35. So from 225 to 35.
Poster is not accurate inn losing the PG and best player preseason. We only lost best player but we did have injuries to Garrett, Iverson, Martin so still significant
Despite the blip in 2016 the downward trend continued to 35 and team became among the elite Top 3 in the Conference

The basis for this Georgetown Posters recommendation for Dan Hurley is "because he is a really good tactician". That is what this poster is attributing to the Ken Pom improvement at both Wagner and URI. Ironically, this is the reason for the infamous Baron 2.0 thread because Hurley had a weakness in this area and the recommendation was the he needed an X's and O's guy on the bench with him to offset this weakness.

All in all, very interesting way to judge a Coach's performance. Could be, and possibly is, in Thor's Goals for his Men's and Women's Basketball Head Coaches.

In that interview it's clear that Dan was frustrated by the end of that Oregon game.....never mentioned the refs or Hassan's injury though, even though he could of.

This program needs to end the "what ifs" when it comes to tough NCAAT losses.....of course unless you win the whole thing the last game will be a loss, but damn one of these days.....I doubt we'll ever be national champs, but a Final Four would certainly make up for those bad memories.

You people participate in a fan board but continue to think you can write anything you want and nobody really reads it. In your anonymity you think you are safe.

If you were preparing to pay someone $2-$4M would you not research anything avail about the prospect?

Would you assign someone to see what that prospects fan base had to say?

I know I would.

We have insiders on this board. Think the GTown forum doesn't have any insiders?

Agreed. Who cares? We already know people outside our community read everything written here.

I have not heard back from URI on the event. My guess is that it was a closed invitation to the highest donor levels. The venue would dictate that.

That's too bad. Would be nice to do.

If you were preparing to pay someone $2-$4M would you not research anything avail about the prospect?

Would you assign someone to see what that prospects fan base had to say?

I know I would.

We have insiders on this board. Think the GTown forum doesn't have any insiders?
By the way, I think you're giving boards like this too much credit. Insiders read this to get the temperature of the fan base and get ideas for the best ways to market the product to us, but I'm quite confident Thorr didn't cross Tim Cleuss off his potential coaching list because RhowdyRam02 threw a fit on here yesterday about how much Cleuss sucks. I mean he absolutely should have, but he probably didn't

Heard good things about Muller.

Another case of a coach wanting to leave a school from a lower league because of the difficulty of getting a bid.....

Plus, Dayton is a fantastic job. It really is better than a lot of so-called P5 schools and Big East schools. The program basketball budget is huge and the fanbase is rabid.

Agreed. Dayton is a great program that is better than many P5, AAC, and Big East programs.
