Week #16 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

In both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll just released, no A-10 teams are in the rankings. In the AP poll, VCU gets 39 votes and Dayton gets 9 votes. Dayton also gets six votes in the USA Today poll and VCU gets 1.

With wins over USF and Tulsa, Cincinnati moves up to #15 in AP poll and #16 in USA Today poll. On the strength of its big win at Virginia and its seven game win streak, Duke moves to #10 in the AP poll and #11 in the USA Today poll. No other URI OOC opponents are in the rankings or getting votes.

28-0 Gonzaga keeps its hold on the #1 team in both polls and given the Zags remaining schedule, they are likely to hold that position until the NCAA tournament. One remarkable stat is Gonzaga has won 20 straight games by double digits.

The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 191-129, a winning percentage of .597, a small decrease from the previous week. The poor performance of New England teams in addition to Marist - these four schools account for 69 of the 129 losses - has had a big negative impact on the OOC winning percentage.

The past week's bad home loss to Fordham had a bigger impact than the road win over George Mason, so the decline in the key measurements was significant. For the time being, URI's NCAA chances are gone and any change in that assessment including any improvement in these factors will require URI to run the table on its remaining regular season games.

Tuesday evening action in the A-10:

URI at La Salle. 6 PM. On CBSSN.

Trailing URI by one game in the standings, La Salle has a favorable remaining schedule, so the Explorers will be keyed for this home contest since it is critical to their staying in the hunt for a tourney bye. As for URI, the question is which team shows up; the one that starts games slowly and never recovers like the first La Salle game and Richmond; the team that builds a big lead and then fritters it away in the second half, or the one that from the get-go keeps its foot to the pedal as in the road wins at UMass and Duquesne??

George Mason at Dayton. 7 PM.

Dayton is playing for top seed in tourney and is too experienced in important games to lose this one.

Davidson at Richmond. 8 PM. On CBSSN.

Richmond has lost two straight and they looking to turn that around to sweep the series with the Wildcats. If the Spiders can do that and considering their favorable schedule in their last three games, Richmond would strengthen their chances for a top 4 conference finish with the win tonight.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Trevecca Nazarene at Belmont. 8PM.

Why play a D2 school this late in the season with a NCAA bid in prospect???

Milwaukee at Valpariso. 8 PM. On ESPN3.

Dayton beats George Mason, 83-70. The Flyers were in charge most of the game, but with about 13 minutes left GMU closed to within one on a traditional three point play by Grayer. Dayton then went on 20-0 run and salted the game away.

Richmond beats Davidson, 84-76. Davidson clawed its way back from a ten point halftime deficit to take 5 point lead with 9 minutes left in game, but Richmond kept its composure, got the lead back and controlled the game the rest of the way.

Wednesday evening action in the A-10:

Fordham at Duquesne. 7 PM.

This contest has no important implications for conference race except that Duquesne will have real incentive to win and get out of the conference cellar.

St. Bonaventure at St. Joseph's. 7 PM.

URI's first goal is to get the double bye by finishing in the top four. The Bonnies trail URI by one game and a Bonnies loss here would strengthen URI's chances of getting the byes. With an upset, St. Joseph's would escape the conference cellar.

Saint Louis at VCU. 7 PM.

Unlikely that VCU would fade on their homecourt, so they most certainly will come into Ryan on Saturday tied for first with Dayton.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Duke at Syracuse. 7 PM. On ESPN.

Loyola (MD) at Holy Cross. 7:05 PM.

UConn at Houston. 9 PM. On CBSSN.

In their first contest at UConn, Houston held the Huskies to a mere 12 points in the first half, enroute to a 62-46 win.

Providence at Creighton. 9 PM.

Yea that wasnt good for Rhody.

Now we have to figure out if there is a way for either Tech or Cuse to not make it in or if there isn't now. OR whoever else is vulnerable that we can nudge out.

Would love to play Cuse in Dayton for the first 4.

Syracuse was never out...they are/were not competing with Rhody. They were always in...they have had a winning record most of the year in the toughest conference...and will now finish at least .500...there was no way they were ever going to be out.

A-10 results in for the evening:

On superior shooting and rebounding, Fordham easily handles Duquesne, 70-52.

As expected, VCU in a easy win over Saint Louis, 64-50.

Close but no enchilada as St. Bonaventure edges Saint Joseph's, 83-77.

I still find this to be the most frustrating thing I have seen on this board.

A cuse fan on this board advocating for a team that is fighting to stay above .500 to be in the tournament.

In a year when URI is fighting for bubble chances. Yes all bubble teams compete against each other.

I personally still think Cuse could be pushed out. Lose the next 3 and they would have lost 6 of the last 7 with a record around .500. I am pulling for that.

Stop it...Syracuse was and has been in all year. Don't tell me that, if Clemson is 4-11 and on the bubble...that you could REALLY question whether or not the 'cuse was in....please....they are in easy and NOT in any way in competition with URI....

And if this is the most frustrating thing you've seen on the board...you musta not been reading "Let's Talk politics"

Shoot, after being Butler, X, and Creighton, they have a pretty reasonable shot at winning out and closing the regular season out & going into their conference tourney on a nice run. They have Marquette & DePaul at home and then SJU on the road to finish things out, very doable.

With that said, I hope they choke each of these next three games away. I can't fathom how unhappy I would be if they dance and we don't (again ...)

I've watched every Cuse game and every Rhody game this year, for a while Cuse did not look like a tournament team and I know plenty of Cuse fans who felt the same way. Rhody looked like the better team of the two earlier in the season. The Florida State win was the start of a little run that got Cuse back into bubble talk. They definitely were competing with Rhody for most of the season but not after tonight

Well, Oregon, my favorite non-URI team,
won on the road against Cal.
Down 16 points, the Ducks came back to win on
another Dillon Brooks 3 pointer at the buzzer.
He beat UCLA earlier this year, the same way.
I figured out who he reminds me of.
Paul Pierce. Same size, same inside-outside game.
Brooks was once recruited by URI.

Only A-10 action on Thursday evening is:

UMass at George Washington. 7 PM.

This contest has no important implications for conference race apart from the fact that a UMass loss will keep them in the A-10 cellar along with St. Joseph's and Duquesne.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

#15 Cincinnati hosts Memphis. 7 PM. On ESPN.

Hofstra at William & Mary. 7 PM.

Quinnipiac at Marist. 7:30 PM. On ESPN3.

Marshall at Old Dominion. 8 PM.

Watching UCLA-Arizona St. right now and a pretty remarkable stat/occurrence just displayed. 27 minutes into the game, Bobby Hurley made his first substitution. That is unheard of in this day and age, and had to do a double take when it happened. Prompted me to look at their season statistics and sure enough, every starter plays over 30 minutes.

It's nothing of real big significance as the Sun Devils really aren't that great of a team, but it is quite impressive the stamina that their starters have.

Limited action Friday night and the results so far.

Brown took a road win at Dartmouth, 80-75, reversing an earlier loss at home to the Green.

Valparaiso came back from an eight point halftime deficit to beat Wright State, 85-74.

In the only A-10 game of evening, Dayton is at Davidson and the Flyers are trailing the Wildcats 31-27 with 8+ minutes left in first half. Game is on ESPN2.

Tie game with 1:50 left. Gibbs actually exhausted as he missed 3 free throws in a row and missed a couple of shots badly. This is why Hurley gave Terrell some time on the bench the other night to save his legs for the end of the game.
