Week #15 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

In both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll just released, no A-10 teams are in the rankings. In the AP poll, VCU gets 14 votes and Dayton gets 4 votes. Dayton also gets eight votes in the USA Today poll.

With the loss to SMU, Cincinnati falls to #18 in AP poll and #17 in USA Today poll. Duke moves up to #12 in the AP poll and #14 in the USA Today poll based on last week's wins over UNC and Clemson. No other URI OOC opponents are in the rankings or getting votes.

Gonzaga remains the #1 team in both polls as the the Zags got a convincing win on the road over St. Mary's. With only five conference games left, the Zags face no real challenge other than maybe their home tilt versus BYU, so there is a good chance they will be undefeated and be the #1 team in the country going into selection Sunday.

The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 177-116, a winning percentage of .604, stable from the previous week.

With the past week's road win over UMass and the Dayton loss at Ryan, the URI standing in three key rating systems showed a small decline.

URI is not the only school to blow a late lead to lose. Tonight in a remarkable game, West Virginia lead by 14 points with less than three minutes left when a barrage of Kansas threes allowed the Jayhawks to mount a comeback to tie the game in regulation. In OT, Kansas quickly built an 8 point lead and then withstood a WVU comeback attempt aided by two clutch FT's by Frank Mason with 22 seconds left to give Kansas a two possession lead. Final was 84-80.

WVA panicked when Kansas threw the press on.
WVA makes a living on their press, but seemed helpless
against one.
BTW, Huggins has it in his contract to be paid
$25,000 every time he beats Kansas.
He already has this season, and a few times before.
Hope he wasn't counting his money when they were 14 up.

rod is right, while Kansas played well in the last minutes, they were very much helped by WVU's total collapse at the close. You play excellently for 37 minutes and then fritter it away in just 3 minutes. Unbelievable, but it does happen.

This year has seen an unusual amount of games where teams blow big leads and lose improbable games. Unfortunately in URI's case, we have been doing it for years and numerous times each year.

Wouldn't want to be Huggins kids in practice today.

Yes, WVU crapped their pants. But the difference vs. URI...

WVU beat Kansas earlier in the year.

Lotta big comebacks now because everyone can drill a bunch of threes in a hurry to get right back in a game.

Tuesday evening schedule in the A-10 includes three games:

St. Joseph's at VCU. 6PM. On CBSSN.

Richmond at George Mason. 7 PM.

Dayton at Saint Louis. 8 PM. On CBSSN.

Naturally, it would be great if VCU and Dayton lost tonight, but odds do not favor that happening. The odds are better in the Richmond - GMU game and a Spider loss here would put them in a tie with URI assuming the Rams beat Fordham tomorrow. With the goal to finish in conference top four to get the byes, URI does control its own destiny in this respect. Just win.

Only one URI OOC opponent in action:

Marist at St. Peter's. 7:30 PM.

We are no longer in assemblycall's last 4 in/first five out, so I'm going with 5th ranked 1-3-1 Sports' bracket for the time being. The reason I skipped bracket's 2-4 are they don't seem to do a last in/first out so they really aren't a help for tracking bubble teams. One nice thing about 1-3-1 is it looks like they're updating their bracket every day. You can find it here: https://131sports.com/

In yesterday's bubble action:

Last four in Syracuse lost at home to #8 Louisville 76-72 in overtime
Sixth out Texas Tech won at home against #4 Baylor 84-78

Bubble teams are 47-37 in games I've tracked.

First results of night are in as VCU beats Saint Joseph's, 91-81. The Hawks gave VCU all it could handle as the teams traded leads in the first half before VCU closed the half out with a 4 point margin. VCU began to pull away in the second half, but the separation was never very large and SJU got to within 5 points with 2 minutes left, but they could not get closer. VCU was 13-27 on three point shots whereas the Hawks were 4-9.

George Mason continues as the surprised team in the A-10 as they move their overall record to 18-8, 8-5 A-10 by beating Richmond, 93-70. Richmond led briefly in the early going, but GMU then built up a double digit lead which they held until six minutes left in game when Richmond cut the margin to four points. Mason responded by going on a 26-7 run to close out game. GMU totally dominated the boards with a 42-21 margin. Richmond now leads URI by 1/2 game and if the Rams beat Fordham the teams will be tied. A URI loss to Fordham would put us in a tie with George Mason for fourth place. Who would have thought that possible in the pre-season!

GM is for real I guess. Don't they play 4 guards most of the time?

Whatever they do, it's working.....Marquis Moore will be a handful.

Wednesday evening action in the A-10:

Fordham at URI. 7 PM. Will URI shake off the disappointing loss to Dayton and come out from beginning to show their talent????

George Washington at Davidson. 7 PM. Davidson's season is slipping away as they have lost three in a row, two of them on their home court. Can they get back on track for the stretch run??

UMass at Duquesne. 7 PM. Can the Dukes extricate themselves from the A-10 cellar??

La Salle at St. Bonaventure. 7 PM. A win by either team keeps them in contention for a bye in the A-10's. The nod here is to the Bonnies given they hold the home court.

In games involving URI OOC opponents:

Xavier at Providence. 6:30 PM. On FS1.

#18 Cincinnati at South Florida. 7 PM. On ESPNU.

Army at Holy Cross. 7 PM.

#12 Duke at #14 Virginia. 9 PM. On ESPN2.

VCU beat Richmond with a big 2nd half.
Will Wade only had two years at Chattanooga
as a head coach.
Seems to be doing well by VCU.
Won 25 games last year, and is 22-5 this year.
I know. He inherited a solid program from Shaka Smart.
Shaka's 10-16 at Texas this year.

There's a lot of programs that consistently make solid coaching hires. You know, hire a good coach followed by another good one and so on.....

Here, it's a rare occurrence.

An exception: Al followed by Harrick.....then the abyss......

Sorry that I haven't done a good job of updating this thread late. The Fordham game was a hit to the gut.

The Rams' win over Mason combined with Richmond's loss to VCU, puts URI into a tie for third place with the Spiders.

Only A-10 game today is GW at Duquesne which is now underway and in the second half, GW leads 50-49 with about 11 minutes left. With a win, Duquesne would escape the A-10 cellar.

I dont care what Keaney blue'rs say about Kenpom and whatever else. Syracuse losing this game right now would help URI's bubble dreams.

Now URI just has to win a bunch of games and create the bubble!

This Lasalle game is going to hurt.
