Week #14 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

In both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll just released, no A-10 teams are in the rankings. VCU gets 3 votes in the AP poll and Dayton gets one vote in the USA Today poll.

Cincinnati moves up to #11 in both polls. Duke moves up to #18 in the AP poll and #19 in the USA Today poll based on their road win at Notre Dame and the home win versus Pitt. No other URI OOC opponents are in the rankings or getting votes.

Gonzaga remains the #1 team in both polls. The Zags passed a nice test with a road win over BYU this past week and will face a sterner test when they travel to play St. Mary's on Saturday. That game will be televised on ESPN2.

The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 165-108, a winning percentage of .604, a slight increase from previous week.

With the past week's home win over GW and the road win over Davidson, the URI standing in three key rating systems improved.

Leading from the opening tip-off and building a lead that maxed out at 23 points, Bucknell easily defeated Holy Cross, 82-68 for its seventh straight win. Bucknell earlier in season split its two games against A-10 foes, beating Richmond at home and losing at La Salle.

These bubble teams need to calm down with their recent winning.

Part of that problem is that in quite a few of these games, bubble teams are playing each other...somebody has to win.

I don't know the official number, but I think there's only been about five of those games since I started tracking.

What killed us this weekend was the upsets where bubble teams beat ranked teams.

The entire thing might come down to the A10 getting just 2 teams in......

So the best 2 out of 3 of us, Dayton, and VCU......right now we lose out.

Those are the 2 other bubble teams we have to be concerned with the most.

Of course, it could also come down to who wins the A10T.....someone other than the 3 of us wins....

Was watching Seth Greenberg and company on ESPN Basketball Tonight.
Seems they feel massive numbers will be getting in from P5 conferences.
All based on SOS due to playing each other.
Said A-10 was weak this year and likely to only have 2 bids.
Also said mid majors were down this season.
Seems the deck is stacked for P5 conferences, as usual.

Unfortunately, they are right, especially this year.

It might require us to not only beat VCU and Dayton in conference, but beating at least one of them in the A10T for good measure.

We really have very little margin for error. When Dan said every one of our remaining games is a "one game season" he's right.

So coming down the stretch I'm going to bounce around the different bracket sites that are more accurate than Joe Lunardi, based on where URI stands, just trying to get the most accurate picture of bubble games. Today I'm using http://assemblycall.com/ an Indiana blog that bracketmatrix says is the most accurate when it comes to picking the bracket the last five seasons. It seems like they update once a week on Tuesday. You can find their latest bracket and write-up here:

http://assemblycall.com/ncaa-tournament ... b-07-2017/

Their last four in as of today are Arkansas, California, Seton Hall, and Syracuse. Their first five out are Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Tennessee, us, and Michigan.

In today's bubble games:

Last four in Arkansas hosts Vanderbilt at 8:30
Last in Syracuse is at Clemson at 8
First out Georgia Tech hosts something called Tusculum at 7:30
Second out Wake Forest is at Notre Dame at 7 on ESPN News
Fifth out Michigan hosts Michigan State at 9 on ESPN

In a crazy game Alabama wins their first game on the road against a ranked opponent in 12 years as they beat #19 ranked South Carolina in an astounding 4 Over-times.

Sindarius Thornwell had 44 points and 21 rebounds for South Carolina. He had an amazing 25 points from the FT line going 25-33. The 33 attempts were an SEC record for one player in a game.

In last night's bubble games:

Last four in Arkansas lost at home to Vanderbilt 72-59
Last in Syracuse won at Clemson 82-81
First out Georgia Tech somehow eeked out a win at home against Tusculum 96-58
Second out Wake Forest lost at Notre Dame 88-81. Thank you very much Bonzie Colson, who scored 27 with 16 rebounds, his 15th double double of the season.
Fifth out Michigan won at home against Michigan State 86-57

Bubble teams are now 38.5 (screw you Georgia Tech) and 32 in bubble games I've tracked.

I agree.
VCU and Dayton aren't lights out good this year.
Just like us.
We aren't very different from both of those teams this year.
Just they've lost a couple less games than we have.
Thank goodness they both are coming to the Ryan center.
Two games we can definitely win.

Calling what's essentially a charging foul 90 feet from the basket when theres 0.4 seconds on the clock is insane. It had zero impact on the play itself and it's putting the game in the refs hands. I don't know how anyone can enjoy watching a game decided by the refs on a call that is hardly ever made.

VCU has now had two consecutive losses flipped to wins. I've always liked VCU but it's hard to stomach a team being handed wins by refs that they haven't earned. Fuck VCU now.

This is kind of a silly thing to get wound up about...was clearly the right call, kudos to the ref for having the guts to make it. The play called for the screen to free up the inbounds pass and the guy ran him over...you can't do that. If it was a URI guy trying to throw it in in the same sitch, and a VCU player ran over Hass trying to set a screen like that and it wasn't called...the outrage would ring on here for years...

Semi-funny all the reaction over these two calls. No one saying they aren't the right call...just that they are 'hardly ever called'...what is this? Pro wrestling? There should be more angst when they AREN'T called....

The game was already decided...0.4 seconds left, VCU wasn't going to score. The guy was setting a screen, it wasn't a shooting foul, it wasn't a foul where the GW guy was holding his jersey not allowing him to get free, it was a foul that had absolutely no impact on the play. Had the foul not been called I doubt anyone except some VCU fans would think twice about it. I can't believe some people are actually calling it a genius coaching move...screens are set on the baseline all the time in situations like that.

And even better...after doing some reading it looks like it may have been the wrong call! The VCU player had his foot out of bounds which from the little reading I've done appears to be illegal.

Just saw the play. It was definitely a foul...on VCU. I don't think they should have called that, either though. 0.4 seconds left, you should have to kill someone to get a call. Swallow these fucking whistles. The Bona thing was bullshit and this might have been even more bullshit.

Would you have the same reaction if a Rhody player was run over like that on the baseline in the same situation and there was no call? Seriously? I think it was a good coaching move, because even if the foul wasn't called (which it unquestionably should have been), he gets the 6' 11" guy off the guy trying to throw it in...'good' move, 'really good' move, genius move...whatever.

Yes I would have had the same reaction. I would have probably said GW isn't good and we shouldn't have to rely on the refs to help us win the game. Also I mentioned in an edit on my previous post that because Lewis had his foot out of bounds it shouldn't have even been a foul on GW.
