Yes, unless the infraction would create a result more unfair than not calling it. If the player is going up to dunk to win the game and is tackled, OK you have to call that. But in a case where the infraction isn't going to change the result, then don't call it. The reason why people are upset is because this is actually the way officials have always officiated games. These last two VCU games are each a break with precedent and are, IMO, indefensible and should cost the officials their jobs.

I am dead serious that I would fire both of these guys; not suspend, not send them a strongly worded letter. I would tell them they can't be trusted to uphold fairness in the games and they can't work for me anymore. And I don't say that lightly, I recognize that these are people with families that probably need these jobs. I think these are indiscretions that display a startling lack of judgment and rise to the level that warrants termination.

My memory is not what it used to be, but I believe Jack Kraft called that identical play with John Nelson in one of our tournament games. Maryland maybe?

Yes 67 I was just going to post that it was the exact same play we ran in the Maryland game

That is some bad coaching by GW

I think the refs actually made the right call

People keep asking how we'd feel apparently forget the PC game last year. They scored the winning bucket by pushing Jarvis out of the way before going up for the winning tip. By the letter of the law the basket shouldn't have counted and Garrett should have gone to the line to win the game. The primary reaction on here was it sucks to lose that way, but you just don't see that call made, so it is what it is

If the VCU player's foot was out of bounds the call was wrong. Simple as that. The refs blew it.

After looking at the replay again.....he was out, and it wasn't even close.

We will have to beat them anyway I guess.....

We should hear something from the league office on this....but there's no way they can reverse it......what could they do, there's no way they could replay the last .4 seconds now......

If us and them are really close on SS and they get picked over us.....

URI used that same play in the nit vs Maryland in the late 70's with Sly hitting both free throws to tie game and force overtime. They ended up losing anyway.

Couldn't the GW coach ask for a reply to see if Jaquan's foot was out of bounds? I would not have even thought to look at the location of his foot had I not read about it by posters here, so maybe the thought of that possibility never entered anyone's mind

Great coaching move in a game that was basically over. Was really the only chance VCU had, and the play worked to perfection.

Amazing too that Lewis ends up the guy at the FT line with ice water in his veins

The refs were not going to review the play since the game was obviously fixed.

Can't review foot out-of-bounds, just who the ball was off of if it lands out of bounds. PC was hurt by the same rule in their game against SJU last month when Lovett stepped out of bounds as he hurled the game ending pass over his head killing 3 seconds and giving SJU 2 clinching free throws in the process.

As an aside, if the refs had seen Lewis' foot OB, the call should have been on him....blocking foul.

The 3 blind mice stole a win from GW.....

KenPom has VCU ranked 61st in a "luck factor" ranking......that's nuts, they should be 1st after those last TWO games......

It will be interesting to see if the A10 office issues a statement that the refs missed the call...like the NBA does....of course it's small consolation to the losing side. Have they ever admitted mistakes by their crap refs?

Even Jerry Palm said there should have been no call anyway.....

My guess is, if VCU is right on the "cut line" on SS, they will be out. These 2 games will work against them in that situation.

The A-10 and its refs have predetermined that VCU will be the 2016-2017 Atlantic-10 Regular season winner and #1 seed for its tournament. If there is any doubt which would impair this result in a game involving VCU, league refs will assert themselves via their officiating and ensure victory for the Rams of Richmond.

It must be so nice to be a fan of a school that has a league administration which continuously bends over backwards to favor their team. I don't think URI fans will ever feel this way.

Yes, it was a Billy Hahn call as I recall, an assistant to Kraft and good player at MD, who is now an assistant for Huggins at West Va. I believe, at the time, Hahn had said he saw Dean Smith use the play in a game while he was playing.

Billy Hahn was Kraft's assistant and remembered the play from his college days. He asked Kraft if he could draw it up and Kraft said sure.

Find my iPhone for the win!
Update, 12:16 a.m. EST: A source associated with SLU tells Deadspin that the team first noticed the driver behaving erratically from the moment they were picked up from the airport yesterday, “swerving and speeding” through back roads, had trouble picking up the team at the right hotel entrance, and eventually used the Find my iPhone feature on a player’s phone—still on the bus—to locate it.

In last night's bubble games:

Last four in California won at Arizona State 68-43
Last four in Seton Hall won at home against Providence 72-70 in overtime
Third out Tennessee won at home against Ole Miss 75-66

Bubble teams are now 42-32 in games I've tracked.

There are no bubble games today

PC had the last possession in regulation with the score tied and Cooley elects not to use his last timeout, resulting in a show clock violation.

Then, PC has possession down 1, with TWO timeouts in the final seconds in OT, and Cooley still chooses not to use a timeout.

Very, very bad coaching down the stretch there.

And Obama was born in Kenya.

John Nelson hit the free throws. Sly had fouled out. We had the lead at the end of (I think) the first overtime and were supposed to be running out the clock when Sly for some reason decided to go to the basket and there was future NBA great Buck Williams to take the charge.

Billy learned that play from his college coach -- one Charles "Lefty" Driesell.

I was there, and by the end of the third overtime had the worst nicotine fit of my life.

TP and RF1, aha I understand now. How could I be so blind? A blown call here and there means there's a conspiracy with all the refs (who do more than just A-10 games) to abide by a mandate from the Atlantic 10 office to have certain teams win. The evidence is so clear!!

To prove this, I'm sure you've tracked every call and non-call from every A-10 game...have emails from the league office to the refs...and tapped phone lines so that conversations have been recorded. How every referee and league administrator has kept a lid on this game fixing for so long, I'll never know.

Let us know when you're going to blow the whistle (no pun intended) on this, publish a book, and have congressional hearings on these refs fixing NCAA games. That'll be quite a story. Maybe I'll wait for the movie.

Settle down, chief. All I said was that there is some evidence of it. Not that I could prove it in court. I don't care whether there is a conspiracy or not, because if there isn't then it's just abject incompetence, which might be worse.

I'd have to say I am with PMMM.
There is no way in my opinion that the Referees favor Dayton, VCU or anybody else.
If you have some evidence of it, bring it forward for all to review.
I know High School Refs, I know personally College Refs and there is no way any of these guys would ever favor one team over another.
Incompetence for sure exists with the perfect example having been Tim Higgins. There are varying levels of Referee performance just like there are varying degrees of performance in the Workplace, Police Departments, Nursing, Doctors, Teachers, Managers, Baseball Players, Football Players...............of course there are varying degrees of performance but to say Referees are dishonest and getting instructions from the League Office..........................

I don't think it's necessarily a conspiracy theory but across most sports it seems like the top teams/players will always get the benefit of the doubt on questionable calls. Maybe it's confirmation bias because I don't pay attention to games involving two low ranked teams very often but if you look at a guy like LeBron in the NBA who gets a lot of calls lesser known guys won't get.

Also Ramster, I don't think refs do it intentionally if that makes sense. It kind of just happens because teams like VCU and Dayton are known as the powerhouses of the a10 so they're expected to win and because of that they get the benefit of the doubt more often than not.
