Even ramster isn't that optimistic about tonight. Hopeful always though, like the rest of us.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that URI under Dan Hurley has lost this exact type of game literally every time since Hurley's been the coach. Big resume game on the road against a fairly solid team with a good coach.

To me it would be a mild shocker if Rhode Island wins tonight.
Yea right now we're 2-5 on the road with those 2 wins coming against teams with RPIs of 200+ and we're 1-3 against teams with winning records in the a10. We definitely have the talent to win but based on what we've seen in similar games to this one I'm not sure why anyone would expect us to win tonight.

As much as I like what Dowtin has showed lately, I want to see Stan in there starting tonight.

Guarding Gibbs on the road is an unfair ask of Dowtin. Stan is the D specialist, stick him on Gibbs all night

It's not just this year. It was an issue 2 years ago as well when URI was trying to get in as a bubble team.

True but 2 years ago the issue was against top 50 teams which was slightly more understandable because the expectations weren't nearly as high going into the season. We were also 6-1 against teams in the 51-100 range. This year the issue has been against any team that is relatively good. A blow out home loss to La Salle and losing another game that was never that close to a Richmond team outside the top 100 are two games that it seems like we would have won two years ago.

Gibbs is difficult as well - IMO we should see lots of CT and Stan on him, moreso than Dowtin. The only way they can beat us is if Aldridge and Gibbs go for 25+ each, that is definitely possible, but I like our chances if we can hold either below their averages. They are a two man team with some role players.
Personally, I'd start Thompson over Dowtin and put Thompson on Aldridge and Terrell on Gibbs. But given our starting 5, our options are:

1. Martin on Aldridge which takes Martin away from the basket and Martin will want to leave Aldridge when he goes for blocks. Will result in offensive rebounds and 3s for Aldridge.

2. Iverson on Aldridge which is what we've tried in the past against good 4s and it hasn't worked. With road officiating, KI will have 2 fouls before the jump ball.

3. Terrell and Dowtin are too small to guard Aldridge.

So that leaves EC. His problem is guys dribbling by him. So maybe putting him on a bigger guy may work. Let them post Aldridge up. Takes the lane away from Gibbs and keeps Aldridge from making 3s.

#23 Peyton ALDRIDGE 6’8 225 Junior F - Iverson ' 6'9"
#12 Jack GIBBS 6’0 195 Senior G - Dowtin 6'4"
#22 Will MAGARITY 6’11 240 Junior F - Martin 6'7"
#20 KiShawn PRITCHETT 6’6 230 Freshman G - Terrell 6'3"
#3 Jon Axel GUDMUNDSSON 6’4 190 Freshman G - Mathews 6'5"

This is the likely man-man match ups

We will need strong perormances from Langevine and Akele when. they spell Iverson and Martin against Aldridge and Magarity

Dowtin vs Gibbs is an important match and most all here have stated. Freshman vs Senior Gibbs who is a consensus 1st team A10 pick. Robinson and Thompson will play big roles off the bench for Dowtin and also for Mathews and Terrell.

I would not change the starting line up of the past 5 games at this point but would sub for players as soon as it is evident that tonight might not be their night. We have depth in Langevine, Akele, Thompson and Robinson - no need to allow starters too much time to break out of a slump whether the "slump" is on offense, defense or both.

Aldridge and Gibbs are a handful and therefore Iverson and Dowtin are in important roles tonight BUT Mathews and Terrell have very favorable mathups for URI tonight. Both going up against Freshmen for Davidson. They both need to beat their men defensively AND offensively. Both Terrell and Mathews need to be at their best tonight, driving to the hoop, getting their men into foul trouble, dishing off to Martin and Iverson as opportunities permit. They also need to get Pritchett and Gudmundsson to turn the ball over and outrebound them.

Ramster, that's a good point...Davidson should be just as worried about defensive matchups as us given that 2 freshman may be defending EC and JT. Problem is those guys have been so inconsistent on offense, it's hard to expect that they will take advantage of their matchups. Rather just go with my defensive lineup.

Andy, I went back over the past 7 games to see how the opposition PG fared against us:

GW - Sina - 35 min, 3-9 fg, 2 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 TO, 0 F, 10 points (Dowtin 37 min) Won 82-70
St Bona - Adams - 37 min, 6-15 fg, 3 reb, 5 assists, 1 steals, 3 TO, 4 F, 25 points (Dowtin 27 min) Won 71-59
Richmond - Jones - 30 min, 3-9 fg, 4 reb, 4 assists, 2 steals, 6 TO, 4 F, 18 points (Dowtin 28 min) Lost 62-73
Duquesne - Smith - 25 min, 4-7 fg, 4 reb, 3 assists, 0 steals, 2 TO, 2 F, 11 points (Dowtin 32 min) Won 90-69
UMASS - Pipkins - 24 min, 3-9 fg, 1 reb, 1 assists, 0 steals, 0 TO, 2 F, 10 points (Dowtin 32 min) Won 79-77
LaSalle - Stukes - 34 min, 4-6 fg, 2 reb, 4 assists, 1 steals, 5 TO, 3 F, 22 points (Dowtin 22 min) Lost 75-87
Dayton - Smith - 38 min, 8-13 fg, 5 reb, 6 assists, 4 steals, 1 TO, 1 F, 21 points (Dowtin 14 min) Lost 64-67

In the past 5 games that Dowtin has started the opposing PGs have gone 19-49 for 39%, the two losses to LaSalle and Dayton their PGs went for 12-19 for 63%. Granted Dowtin played 22 and 14 minutes in those games and has played 37,27,28,32 and 32 the last 5 games.

It will be critical to contain Gibbs tonight. If Dowtin looks to be struggling vs Gibbs then agree that Robinson and/or Thompson should get the call. Would be good to get Gibbs tired with relentless, pressure defense.

Ramster, what are you trying to get at with these stats? Also Jarreau is the pg of Umass and Powell for La Salle. If you throw the St. Louis and St. Joes games into the discussion then our opponents shot 41% (with Powell not Stukes) when Jarvis has started and 43% (with Jarreau not Pipkins) when Dowtin has started.

Just looking back at Dowtin's stats since he went into the starting line up. Previous poster has suggested Robinson start instead of Dowtin for tonight's game as Dowtin might not be able to contain a player like Gibbs tonight. Looking at the stats I would conclude to not change the starting line up but see how the game goes before making a substitution for Dowtin.

I'm not sure the stats tell the whole story. I don't think Dowtin was on Adams for the entire 27 minutes he was in the game. I might not be remembering correctly but either way if I was Hurley I would play whoever I think is the better defender. In my opinion Stan's defense is more valuable against Davidson than Dowtin's offense but I doubt we'll see a change in the lineup anyways.

Also I really wish Hurley would start Stan for this game. After thinking about it some more I really don't understand how you can start Dowtin, a freshman, for what will be one of the most important games of the year when you have Stan, an experienced junior who is arguably a better player than Dowtin. Especially when you look at our biggest win of the season, Cincy, and Stan was the one who played point for the majority of the second half when we made our comeback. I really do not understand Hurley's reasoning to start Dowtin and give him more playing time. It's like he's preparing for the future when he needs to be concerned with the present.

IMO, looking for 3s (see my ramble below) and tough man-to-man defense is the formula for success against good competition. I like Thompson cause he fits those roles. Maybe Dowtin does too. Tonight will be a good measuring stick.

I like looking for 3s as a strategy, because I feel...

We struggle when our guards and slashers have the mindset of trying to make contested layups or force passes down low. Especially when guys are passing up 3s only to dribble in and take a contested layup or turn the ball over.

We're good when our guards have the mindset to pass out for 3s and guys are getting in position to shoot and shooting with confidence. Mix in some KI/HM high low, I'll be happy.

Josephski,

I only looked at the last 7 games.

Pipkins is definitely the PG for UMASS. Jarreau is a combo guard at 6'5". He gets a lot of assists and he has the ball in his hands a lot, but Pipkins (generously listed at 5'11") is the PG. He was recruited as a PG. Our PG was covering Pipkins, he was not covering Jarreau.

For LaSalle, Stukes has been the PG for several years. Again, our PG was covering Stukes. Powell has come in this year (as a Transfer) and he is also an assist guy. You could argue whether Stukes or Powell is the primary PG but again, in the game versus URI our PG was covering Stukes.

I'm not sure the stats tell the story either. I am not sure we are better in this game with Robinson or Dowtin starting, but since I am not sure and the stats don't seem to show Dowtin suffering at the expense of the opposition's PGs (only 38% shooting being allowed in 5 games) then I would lean towards not changing the starting line up. 4 wins in the past 5 games lends me to not rock the boat.............at least yet. Plus I would see how Mathews and Terrell play tonight. If either, or both, do not get off to strong starts I would bring in Robinson, Thompson, or both. We are in must win territory, no room for loyalty. Play the guys who are playing well in any given game - not that big a difference between the Starting Guards and the Bench Guards in many games

Last year we had 18 field goals for the entire game against these guys with only 6 assists. Have to do a lot better than that tonight.

I don't think winning 4 of the last 5 is enough to say Dowtin deserves to start. The four wins have been against teams with a combined conference record of 14-24. Two of the wins were against the bottom two teams in the conference. We'll see how Dowtin plays tonight but I haven't been that impressed with his play against better teams.

As I said before, in our best half of basketball Stan played 16 minutes. Maybe there is no correlation between Stan's playing time and winning against Cincy but I feel like he hasn't been given the time he deserves. We've already seen Hurley screw up once by playing Stan only 6 minutes against Valpo and I think he's screwing up again by starting Dowtin over Stan. I hope I'm wrong.

Also Dowtin's averaging 31.2 minutes over his last 5 games, only player who is averaging more is Terrell with 31.4. I just cannot understand why Hurley is so high on Dowtin, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills lol.

I don't think it matters much who starts, and Dowtin hasn't done anything to lose the starting job. But for us to win we will have to hold down Gibbs, for us to do that will require our two best on-ball defenders Stan and CT logging major minutes on him. But those minutes don't only come from Dowtin, they can also come from EC (if he's struggling on O), spelling JT for a few minutes, etc.

But for us to win we will have to hold down Gibbs, for us to do that will require our two best on-ball defenders Stan and CT logging major minutes on him. But those minutes don't only come from Dowtin, they can also come from EC (if he's struggling on O), spelling JT for a few minutes, etc.
Dowtins not just starting, he's getting almost the most minutes out of anyone since the first game he started. Dowtin's at 31.2 and Terrell is 31.4 in our last five for minutes. I don't think he's that much better than CT or Stan to deserve those minutes.

Do we think that scoring is part of the game plan?

Seriously. Are these players unaware what's at stake? They have blown all their mulligans this season and now must win.

Show up ready to play.

josephski wrote:I don't think winning 4 of the last 5 is enough to say Dowtin deserves to start.

Well Hurley thought Dowtin deserved to start 5 games ago so in winning 4 of last 5 it's not like Dowtin has done anything to change his mind. If you listen to the post game shows and the Hurley Shows you will hear Dan talk highly of Dowtin. The odds of him removing him from the starting line up are diminishing.
I had mentioned back in December that the ball moved well with Dowtin and Robinson in the game together with less dribbling. I like Robinson, just don't see where he needs to only be interchangeable with Dowtin. With Terrell picking up his 2nd foul at the 17:11 mark we will see a lot of Robinson anyway.

Who was it here that wanted to sit Dowtin again?

Cats denying KI ball in high post, well scouted....

Dowtin with 7 of URI's first 9 points. Not intimidated at all playing in Belk Arena. Guess he should be starting? :)
