ramster, again love your optimism....
I think we'll beat GW.
Before I get on the wagon, I need to see us beat Davidson and UMass on the road.
We are allergic to road games against decent or better teams.....
We are an NCAAT team if we could play all our games at home......ha ha

If we beat Davidson then that should be considered progress, since we've yet to beat anybody on the road that's worth a damn.
Beat UMass and we finally sweep them which would be another sign of progress.
Beat Dayton and we are really in business.

I still think VCU is the best team in the conference.

3 teams among the 5 leaders that had 2 losses played today
Bonnie's lost to URI so they now have 3 losses
LaSalle lost to St Joes 73-72 so they now have 3 losses just like URI
Duquesne gave Richmond a scare but Richmond won so now Richmond, Dayton and VCU have 2 losses to lead the league.
URI has 3 losses
It ain't over til it's over.

I've said this since day 1. We are very lucky to not have to travel to their place this year.Billyboy78 wrote:I still think VCU is the best team in the conference.
Those Rams are big, fast, strong, tough and well coached with a rabid fan base.
Solid and an extremely difficult match up for URI.

We will win this game. We have won back to back home games plenty of times and then it's back to underachieving on the road. Wake me up if that changes.

Re: Game 21: George Washington Tuesday Jan 31, 7pm CBSSN
GW is 12-9 overall and 4-4 in the A10. Their best wins are against Temple on the road and UCF and Davidson at home. They come into the Ryan Center on a 3 game win streak. They beat cellar dwellers Duquesne and Saint Louis at home and George Mason on the road.
GW has a slightly above average offense and a slightly below average defense. Offensively they score a high percentage of their points on 3 pointers. They have the top 3 point shooting % in the A10 right now. Interestingly though, their 2 point FG % is among the worst in the country. They also have done an excellent job of getting to the FT line and shoot it at a high percentage from the charity stripe. Offensive rebounding is also a strength.
On the downside, over 21% of their possessions result in a turnover. They also see a high number of their possessions result in steals and a high percentage of their shots get blocked (Hass is salivating). Expect to see full court pressure against them from the opening tip. They will try to slow the game down against us and we should be trying to speed the game up and force them into mistakes.
Defensively, opponents are shooting it at a high percentage from 3 against them. I’d still like to see us pound it inside early and often against them and have that open up the 3. They don’t force many turnovers so another reason to get out and RUN!
Here are your likely GW starters:
#34 Tyler CAVANAUGH 6’9 243 Graduate Student F
#12 Yuta WATANABE 6’9 196 Junior G
#23 Jaren SINA 6’2 187 Redshirt Junior G
#11 Arnaldo TORO 6’8 245 Freshman F
#3 Jair BOLDEN 6’4 205 Freshman G
Cavanaugh is their main threat averaging 15ppg and 7.3rpg followed by Watanabe at 12.5ppg and 5.6rpg. Every player on GW that plays significant minutes, excluding Toro, can shoot the 3. It will be interesting to see how we match up with them since they start 3 players over 6’8.
Stats provided are A10 stats only.

By the way, GW plays some 1-3-1 zone. I would definitely expect to see it tomorrow night after we struggled with it against Bona. I'm sure this will be a point of emphasis at practice today.

pretty easy fix from what they did against Bonaventure. Dont to the stupid lollipop passes guard to guard, which play right into a 1-3-1 and pass down to the blocks instead. Pass to the block and you'll have a favorable 1-1 or a 2-1 match up every time.RoadyJay wrote:By the way, GW plays some 1-3-1 zone. RJ, good analysis. We have to make them play our game....faster pace, force them into mistakes.....if that means we play our bench more, than that's what we should do....guys like SR and Thompson force more steals......
We play their slowdown game, we'll be in trouble....Cavanaugh will have a huge game against us.
We very rarely force our will on teams that are close to us in talent....

Easier said then done. If we struggled to make those passes against St. Bonaventure it will probably be even more difficult against a taller GW team.Da_Process_Survivor wrote:pretty easy fix from what they did against Bonaventure. I wonder how much of it was struggling to vs not looking for it. The few times they seemed to force the issue and get the ball down low, they were able to and racked up easy buckets.RhowdyRam02 wrote:Easier said then done. I think they do need to show dribble penetration too, that'll open up passing lanes if you can get the zone to collapse on you

Re: Game 21: George Washington Tuesday Jan 31, 7pm CBSSN
I think Dowtin was the one who made most of those passes....the kid can see the floor better than any other guard we have.
That's a big issue with this team.....big time athletes, but not big time BB IQ...and the funny thing is, JD isn't as athletic as most of them.
As an aside, that's why I'm optimistic that Russell will be a big addition to this team. He seems to display those high IQ qualities in abundance.
AND he's athletic....a great combination to have...and hard to find.....
How many PG's with both have we had since Tyson?
Those kind of players make the difference in close games. A good passing team is a high IQ team.......

If my math is correct, JT has 999 career points and should go over 1,000 this game. I Apologize if this was already mentioned.

I think Jarvis Garrett must see the floor pretty well, since he has a 3-1
assist to turnover ratio in A-10 play.
That doubles Dowtin's 1.5 ratio.
So tired of people taking shots at a kid who was playing
while he was ill.

If Jarvis see's the floor in this game that will be very encouraging. Hoping he can return to form by the Dayton game.

Re: Game 21: George Washington Tuesday Jan 31, 7pm CBSSN
Hoping to see Jarvis back soon. We are not exactly setting the world on fire with our outside shooting against the zone. Might force our opponents to think twice about what defense they are playing. One would hope that we would not see 17 turnovers with his return.

Re: Game 21: George Washington Tuesday Jan 31, 7pm CBSSN
I like Jarvis as a PG. I like Dowtin as a PG. two things are separate to me. I do think that Dowtin had several passes that should have been assists fumbled because the recipients wasn't ready however. That could be true of Jarvis as well it just hasn't stood out to me because of the nature of the pass maybe?rodfromcranston wrote:I think Jarvis Garrett must see the floor pretty well, since he has a 3-1

Should be a low number of walk up attendance due to the incoming snow. Hopefully students still make the walk down the hill for the game.
