THE EARLY LINE URI vs Richmond

Unread post by luke »

The line is out on this game now and it is URI - 3. For once this season
that line might be smaller than expected, of course realizing that it is a
road game for URI. I hate to say URI will cover any line ever again this
season because I think it might be the kiss of death, but I think URI will
cover. I have seen Richmond a number of games and have not been impressed.
They lost their last home game to George Mason where they were manhandled
on the glass. If the Rams attack the boards as they did at duquesne we should
see a similar result.

Forgot to mention that Jarvis Garrett is not listed as out or even questionable yet,
but then again he wasn't listed as out against the dukes either, so we'll see.

Students are back and they average around 6000 in an arena that holds 7200.

Solid attendance, they're no slouch but I predict a double figure win. Then again, which Rams team is gonna show up?

I'll take it. At the beginning of the year, I certainly would have expected more, but now, any type of W would be fine. I, also, feel like Luke, in that, I, too would normally expect a fairly comfortable win, but at this point, I am afraid to make any sort of prediction with this Ram group.

The line is now URI - 3 1/2. They need this game badly.

Anyone know what truly dictates a change in the line without any major news such as injuries?

Money going one way. In this case a good amount of money is going URIs way. What they are attempting to do basically is more or less balance out the wagers, so it isn't too heavy one way of the other. So, when a lot of money is going on one team, the line either goes up or down to attempt to get action on the other team, that is bet less. Injuries or other intangibles can also obviously factor in too.

Especially on a small college game, where some books might only do a couple thousand of action on the game, one big bet on a side can move the line substantially - others then follow suit. Sometimes bettors can take advantage of this by placing one (say 5k) limit bet against the side they want and then waiting for the line to move before simultaneously making 10 $5k bets on the other side at the better number (called a "head fake") -- though I dont think this happens often anymore.

Yes, and lines can be moved by the local bookie at his discretion for something like a Patriot game, that would typically have a heavy influx of money wagered on the local team. There are a lot of sharp people out there that track these games and virtually impossible for Vegas to be on top of every game on a typical Wednesday night card, with so many games. Though metrics are used heavily, it is still very difficult. Someone on this board may have much more knowledge than most about an A 10 type of game in particular, so , there is certainly more of a possibility in these smaller college games where a mistake will be made by Vegas and locals will attempt to hop on what they perceive as a "bad line". In the scheme of things, with millions of dollars being bet every night, even if a small amount on a game like URI vs Richmond or PC vs St Johns, if you add up all the vigorish with every game, Vegas is still making a lot of money on just that. And without risk of losing big time too.

Wow.
I checked back to vegasinsider and 6 are at -6, one is at 5 1/2 and one is at 5. Pretty amazing.

Could it have to do with this tweet from Bill Koch that recently came out?
Bill Koch @BillKoch25
Some welcome injury news ahead of #URI-Richmond -- #Rams associate AD Mike Laprey (illness) expected to return after a one-game absence.

But seriously, this is a lot of movement just hours before game time, and from a starting point of -3 just two days ago.

Is it possible the Garrett is cleared to play? Does Richmond have a late scratch? Will be interesting to see the starting lineups.

Luke, does this seem odd to you?

Yes, Ramster I would say it is a little odd for the line to move 3 points especially in favor of the
visiting team. Must not be much support out there for a Richmond win. there must be one sided
betting tp this point.

A lot of time sharp money pushes the line in this case the opening line of -3 to -5

In this case the sharp money was wrong
