Week #12 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

Today's release of both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Poll finds no A-10 teams in the rankings. Dayton gets 6 votes in the AP poll.

With its win over Miami, Duke moves up one position to #17 in both polls. With wins over Temple and Tulane, Cincinnati moved up to #19 in both polls.

The cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 136-91, a winning percentage of .599, a slight decrease from the previous week.

Villanova continues to get the #1 ranking in the AP poll while the USA Today poll gives that nod to Kansas. Gonzaga at 19-0 remains the nation's only unbeaten D1 team.

With the week's win over Duquesne, there was a slight improvement in URI 's rating in three key rating systems.

No mater what happens...it'll be a blast watching their fans fight on twitter.

Nice win by NC State, although that will probably bump them ahead of us in bubble talk.

NC State, a team that lost to UNC by 51 points and took a loss at BC, goes into Cameron and comes from behind to beat Duke, 84-82.

Holy Cross beats American, 63-55. HC set a program record with16 steals in the game.

NC State had not won at Cameron Indoor since 1995 or 22 years
NC State had not won a road game in NCAA Conference play in 3 years
NC State had just lost 4 of last 5 including 51 point loss to UNC
Not looking good on Jeff Capel's resume to succeed Coach K one day

Capel continues to tinker with line up changes opting for Grayson Allen and Luke Kinnard coming off the bench.

Needless to say Duke message board is not a happy place.

For sure. Cincinnati RPI is 15. Duke was about the same but will take a big hit losing at home. Highest rated team on our schedule is now Cincinnati at 15. Solid Top 25 win. Unarguable Top 25win, unlike a Nebraska win who dropped out of top 25 later in the season after we beat them.

That's my point Rambone. Because Nebraska suffered badly after we beat them when they were legitimately ranked, many have remarked at this having been a Top 25 win with an "asterisk" but this Cincinnati win actually goes in the opposite direction with their team continually moving higher in the rankings.

As long as Cincy stays in the top 25 that's great for us.

As for thinking that they are better than Duke....I doubt it, and I hate Duke.

Coach K's absence is hurting them no doubt.....they will likely go farther than Cincy in the NCAAT..imo anyway.

By the end of the season they will bounce back. NCAA champs as was predicted before the season? Probably not.

It is truly unusual for Duke to underachieve however. Injuries, the Allen mess.....

Yeah I expect sometime in February they'll really kick it up a notch when coach K is back.

Cinci is pretty much just beating teams they should beat.
10 straight wins.
They play Xavier Thursday. That will be a good one.

Really really really could use UC winning the city battle and beating Xavier.
That would be very good for us, they are lacking a recent signature win and that would likely catapult them into the Top 15.

One can make any argument they want...but...beating Cincy is/was not/will probably never be 'better than beating Duke.'
If resume evaluation for NCAAT was objective...maybe, but...Duke is in the ACC, Duke is Duke...and anyone that beats Duke...is in...end of story.

Well yeah, but as far as our tournament resume goes, right now a win versus Cinci is actually better.
But yeah it would be a program milestone achievement if we beat Duke back in November.

OK, logically, you might be right...but the selection process isn't bound by such a thing.
It's bound by complex scientific, highly complex formulas and ideas like...'Duke is Duke'...
...and if I had my druthers right now, I'd still take a win over Duke rather than Cincy.
Bearcats are having a nice year (in a mediocre conference but, unfortunately...Duke is...well...Duke...still.

Duquesne falls to Davidson, 74-60. Saddled with a 23 point halftime deficit, the Dukes rallied in the second to cut the margin to 6 points with 5 minutes left in game, but could get no closer.

Second worst loss in the history of Pitt basketball, that will certainly give every team behind them, including us, the chance to move up.

The were two reasons why I started posting the bubble games in games of interest. The first is obviously these are the schools that are our closest competitors for a tournament bid, so their results are very relevant to us.

But also I think it's very easy for us to get down when we lose or play poorly and I think it's been so long since we made the tournament that we've developed an elevated idea of what it takes to get in. I've been tracking this for about a week and bubble teams are 16-12. If you're a bubble team you're going to have good wins, but you're also going to have poor performances where you gut out a win and lose games you should win.

We all wish they lived up to the preseason ranking. They didn't, but they still have a good, realistic shot to do what we've been dying to see.

There's some parity in college basketball folks.

Pitt is still very much in the mix with wins against Marquette, Maryland and Virginia.
I'd still wager they don't make it.
They have some serious jeklye and Hyde stuff goin on.

Awful loss for Pitt. Margin of victory (or loss in this case) well echo on their resume. However, Pitt has something that URI does not...an outstanding road win AT MARYLAND, convincingly. Plus, win over Marquette on neutral court now looking better. Also beat UVA too.

That's 3 legit wins...1 on road, 1 on neutral court, 1 at home. URI does not have that.

Pitt has some bad losses but "more better" wins than URI. Plenty of season left...

And therein lies the "hard" part...our margin of error is much slimmer, than a low/ mid-tier P5 school. We have less shots, we have to be more near perfect than them, that is what makes it hard(er) at URI.

I'm with the crowd that thinks we probably have to beat both VCU and Dayton to have a shot. Potentially with a run to the A10 finals that includes knocking off 1 of those 2 could cancel out losing to 1 in reg season.

Pitt is 1-6 in their conference....good wins or not, there's no way they should dance with that kind of conference record at this point.

Yes the ACC is the best conference out there, but they will have to at least get much closer to .500 by the end of the season to get in.
