UMASS started 3 freshmen against Dayton
Brison Gresham
Luwane Pipkins
DeJon Jarreau
Plus
Junior Donte Clark and Soph Rashan Holloway

UMASS has lost at home to St Bonaventure, won at home vs Dayton and lost at VCU and at a surprisingly tough George Mason team.

......I expect Holloway will present matchup problems for us; his size and posting will most likely cause us to pick up many fouls......start Hasson, use his minutes carefully and let Cyril get his five....I don't see anyone else having the strength to handle him.....

I wish our big man that lost 40 lbs was contribing like Holloway (who lost 60 lbs).
Holloway is probably The best scorer for UMass right now.

This game is a perfect example of why you need to be able to play some zone defense, UMass is a very poor shooting team (especially from 3) and our big men will need to stay on the floor for us to win. With our defensive philosophy of fouling on basically every possession, I expect this to be a very close game.

Hi everyone, mostly use your board for the games of interest thread as it's great but figure I'd chime in my two cents..

This team is young, talented, and very inconsistent.. Umass starts 3 freshman and 5 freshman are in the rotation getting minutes.. Donte Clark & CJ Anderson are our only two upperclassman that see any type of significant playing time. As you have noted Holloway has become an absolute beats this year after working his arse off in the offseason to shed 50-60 pounds. He still has room to improve but he is notably quicker and better suited for the college game, he will be very difficult for any A-10 team to stop.. we do not shoot the ball very well and struggle terrible against any zone defense (why I like the uri matchup) going against a good man D is easier for this team than a mediocre zone.. Donte Clark & EC Matthews are very similar in my opinion, both are Juniors that have the ability to take over any game and score 30 points.. however both are prone to defensive lapses and careless turnovers ( if either of them plays as "Good EC" or "Good Donte") it will give that team a very big advantage. Dejuan Jarreau is going to be A-10 first team multiple times in his career, but also still in his first season so not sure who shows up, you will leave the game saying either 1. This kid is so overhyped don't know why Umass is so excited or 2. Holy shit how the hell did Umass pull in such an amazing recruit..

Coaching: I believe our schools are more alike coaching wise than either fan bases would care to admit.. Both brought in young unproven coaches with very lofty expectations.. Both coaches recruit their asses off, and both coaches are disliked by most of the A-10 fan bases.. Both coaches have built solid clean programs where they bring in high character individuals that reflect very well on the univserities.. and I believe both coaches have much room for improvement in both in game management as well as game planning.. and both of our fan bases truly hope this is the guy to finally end our long droughts of nothing but mediocrity at best.

Anyways I hope this is somewhat informative and I will be making the drive down to the Ryan Center on Sunday. It's one of my favorite venues to visit since your fans are always good natured in the cheering and good natured trash talk during the game. It really can be a blast when you combine the competitiveness and rivalry with keeping it clean and just enjoying ourselves (with a little bit of hate added in)

If Hassan is at full health I think Holloway could have a tough time getting a shot off against him. But Hass likely will not be at full strength. Also Holloway is a god awful free throw shooter. At least he was against Dayton... atrocious form.
I wanna see us force them to jack up threes.
Last two times we've ravenged them when they've come to the Ryan Center. Hopefully we have a good crowd and we whoop some UMass!

Nice post UMassfan guy!
Only thing I disagree with is, you all probably dislike your coach more than we dislike ours at this point.
If we don't make the tournament this year...we'll be on or above you guy's level of discontent.

EC Matthews scoring 30 points isn't like a hit or miss thing.

The hit or miss thing is if he will shoot a high percentage and play within the team and its offense. 30 points? EC scores 30 points anytime he wants.

Its how effective/timely those 30 are and if the team wins.

I'd really like to see a change in the starting lineup on Sunday. I'm curious as to what others think but in my opinion our starting lineup is not getting it done. The +/- thread that was posted showed our starting lineup was the worst unit over the course of the Duke, Cincy, Houston, Valpo and PC games. Those five guys are probably the best on our team but the chemistry does not seem to be there.

At this point of the season it doesn't feel like we have a go to lineup when we're not playing well which is not a good sign.

So...'those 5 guys' include 4 that started every game last year and a 5th that was supposed to be an NBA draft pick lock. One admittedly coming back from injury and the other 4 with full year's experience under their belts. But, does the team look any better? Seems like they should...but do they? Who's fault is that? Hint: Hurls was right when he said he didn't have these guys ready to play...

First time semi long time here. Not here to troll or gratuitously trash talk. I enjoy coming here periodically to get a rival's perspective.

And I know I speak for much of the UMass fan base when I say that we are very concerned you're going to use your L to the Explorers as fuel to really take it to us. Holloway is increasingly becoming as unguardable as anyone we've had here in a long time, but it's only in the last five or so games that we've made a more conscious effort at getting him the ball on a regular basis. And even now, he still doesn't get nearly as many touches as I think he should. His 29 minutes last game were about 10 more than he usually gets and defensively he's still often a liability because A) he can't guard guys beyond four or so feet from the rim and B) he's so big that he gets ticketed for fouls I've literally never seen anyone else get called for. A guy could make very modest contact but effectively bounce right off him and it looks like he was clobbered. So there's a great chance you get him in foul trouble and beat us that way.

As for the rest of our young crew, our two starting freshman guards are, at their best, as potential-laden an A10 backcourt as I can remember since Nelson and West or Mobley and Wheeler. But potential laden is the key phrase. We could see them combine for 40 or shoot a combined 1 for 15. Frankly, given the way you guys defend the ball, I wouldn't be surprised if they played closer to the latter. They are both monster talents but Pipkins still doesn't understand what's a good shot and what isn't and Jarreau still doesn't quite get that you can't go 1 on 2 into the lane and not lose the ball against quality A10 opponents. Clark, our junior, is basically a slightly worse EC. Great scorer when he's on, super off when he's off. In A10 play he's been an unmitigated disaster after being our top guy in the non-conference. We have a lot of depth with 9 guys who have contributed at least 13 or more points at some point this season, but it's impossible to know who off our bench will show up on a given night. If Hurley goes man as he always does, I could see Flowers getting hot from deep. He's our lefty 3 point specialist freshman who is the only guy on our roster that I actually trust shooting threes.

I've followed Rhody only from afar and have been surprised by some of the losses. Still, you have a lot of talent. I'm wondering: what's not showing up in the box scores that a casual observer would be missing? I see you guys as having a great but super inconsistent star in EC, a monster athlete and defender in Hassan but one who's been hobbled by injury, the ever reliable Terrell, and then several other solid guys. Has anyone disappointed?

Key to this game for both teams is fairly simple since, let's be real, neither coach is running anything all that complicated:
*Which team hits its open looks from deep
*Which team controls tempo
*Which team stays out of foul trouble.

We have a lot of size. Hines and Gresham are both huge and though their stats don't always reflect it, we can win with Holloway in foul trouble. If he does get in foul trouble, however, we'll have to hit threes and if we don't, you'll beat us. At the end of the day, this one is about execution and team defense. Probably won't be terribly pretty or complex. The team that plays the hardest, hits open shots, and limits stupid mistakes will win the game.

Best of luck.

I skipped last night. I'll be there. It's Sunday on a long weekend.

We just aren't who we were sold to be. Regular URI team really with a coach inflicted handicapped front court.

I know how to cheer for a middle of the road uri. Been doing it for decades. Although, we did have some studs 10 years ago.

Hey Curry Hicks Sage....you know your stuff.

Hurley's refusal to play zone will help your team immensely......our coach won't play one because he says in so many words..."we suck at it"...which is the weakest excuse on the planet...maybe he needs to learn how to teach it.

Mixing things up would keep other teams more off balance and also help us stay out of foul trouble, which it seems we're always in.

Especially with our lack of frontcourt depth plus Hassan's health issues. But that would make too much sense.

Time to play angry!!

UMASS is 11-6 overall and 1-3 in the A10. Their one win in the conference, as we all know, was their last game against Dayton. Plenty of credit to UMASS for taking down Dayton but Dayton also played a terrible game. They shot 32% from 2, 30% from 3, 59% from the FT line, and had 19 turnovers!

While our last opponent La Salle has an elite offense and a statistically poor defense you can flip the script with UMASS. They have an elite defense (top 40) led by Freshman Luwane Pipkins who has one of the best steal %s in the country. Their offense on the other hand is nearly in the bottom 100 in D1.

So how have they been able to score so many points?

They play fast! Run and gun baby! They rank among the worst 3-pt shooting teams in the country but are one of the better 2-pt shooting teams in the country. Rashaan Holloway helps with that 2-pt FG % as he is shooting it at 59% on the season and at 66% in conference play so far. UMASS is also a poor FT shooting team at 64%.

At the pace UMASS plays they are prone to turnovers. We need to crank up the intensity level on defense and make these guys make mistakes with the ball. As bad as Dayton played against them they had 14 steals against UMASS and forced 17 total turnovers.

UMASS also fouls often, not as often as we do, but almost. FTs will be important in this game.

Here are your likely starters:
#45 Rashaan HOLLOWAY 6’11 310 Sophomore C
#0 Donte CLARK 6’4 192 Junior G
#2 Luwane PIPKINS 5'11 185 Freshman G
#24 DeJon JARREAU 6’5 182 Freshman G
#2 Brison GRESHAM 6'9 220 Freshman F/C

UMASS Stats:
umass_stats.png

Donte Clark (14.2 ppg) is their leading scorer but he has been nearly invisible the last two games. Holloway and Pipkins both averaging 11.5 ppg.

Can Hass and Cyril stop Holloway?

Was that really our first dud though? It's the first one we lost but we didn't play that great against Brown, Holy Cross and William & Mary but managed to win because none of those teams are very good. If we played the same way we did in any of those three games against La Salle we probably still would have lost.

Hopefully tomorrow isn't a continuation of "all guards all the time" - it's getting kinda sickening because they get taken advantage of on D almost every trip. Their best offensive set starts with KI getting the ball at the foul line, with (an effective) HM low. Maybe get all kinds of freekn crazy and have Iverson, Martin, and Langevine all in the game at the same time...and gulp...yes....just two guards?

I think lineups will be switched up, after ripping the starting five off the floor at once, why not, mix it up, good coaches have switched starting lineups before and lead to success.

If we don't see a change in the starting lineup I have no hope going forward. Our best win this season came in a game when Jarvis didn't play a minute in the second half, maybe it was just a coincidence, maybe not.

I'm not against a change in the starting lineup... but I'm more interested in who is getting the bulk of the minutes and who is in at the end of the game. Stan and Dowtin have earned the right to play the most significant/important minutes until others show they deserve their minutes back.

Good point. My only thought is that Hurley will probably give the guards who start the most time but as long as Dowtin and Stan are getting quality minutes I'll be at important times I'll be happy.

One interesting thing that wasn't really talked about after the La Salle game was CT only getting 4 minutes. Does anyone think that's due to just coming back from injury or can we expect to see mostly Stan and Dowtin off the bench?

Our guards typically account for approximately 125 of 200 minutes per game.

Since conference play started here is the minutes breakdown for our guards:
EC 28.5
JT 31.0
JG 26.0
J Dowtin 17.8
Stan R 21.3
Total ~125

I'd like to see Dowtin and Stan with even more minutes. So, who do you take minutes away from to get Thompson some time?

Over the summer I said Stan would be first off the bench, Dowtin would move into second off the bench and Thompson would be the odd man out so I'm not surprised by his lack of minutes. Maybe if EC is having an off game Hurley could give CT some of his minutes but I thought a 6 guard rotation was too much so I'm content with the numbers you posted. If anything I think Jarvis should be slightly lower and get Dowtin into the 20s.

So much talk about playing time for 23 guards...that seems like a big problem root right there...

Would love to see some stretches of just 2 guards at once...I know, I know...that's crazy talk....

Well it's crazy talk for our current roster. Are we going to put Iverson, Langevine and Hass on the floor together so we can see how quick we can rack up fouls?

I doubt that we'll see a lineup change. Dan doen't strike me as someone who embraces change.

Wish list for tomorrow:
-Play angry! Show some emotion!
-More PT for Stan and Dowtin
-Periods of both Cyril and Hass on the floor at the same time and even Cyril, Hass, and KI on the floor at the same time
-Attack the basket! Get fouled. Make freebies
-Mix up the defensive pressure... full-court press, 3/4 court, more trapping
-A little zone

I realize that some of these items are unlikely but it's my wishlist so I can wish for what I want

RJ, that's a good list. Sign me up for that.....now let's see if any of it happens....

If it does happen, there needs to be some consistency from game to game doing these things.....sometimes we get positive changes in a game, and the next game we revert to Clueless George out there.......
