Dayton @ St Bonaventure and St Joseph's at URI on Tuesday night Dec 3rd.
Next game for URI and Dayton will be Friday Jan 6

Dayton maintains a very active message board.

Preview from Dayton Daily News for tonight's big game at St Bonaventure. Charles Cooke, Dayton's leading scorer, is a game time decision due to a back issue and a wrist issue.

If he doesn't play they [Dayton] probably loses....tough place to play......

If Cooke is out for us Friday...then we're even if Hass still can't go.....one can hope anyway.

Of course if the Flyers lose tonight and Cooke is back for us...they will be major fired up......

I imagine it is going to be a sell out regardless but I imagine they will still be in their winter break...so possibly less students more old folks = slightly less home court advantage

Looks like Dayton is going to win @ Bonnies without Cooke. I think that's good for URI. Really, Dayton, URI and VCU should be rooting for each other to clean up on all the other teams in the conference and separate themselves as much as possible.

Agreed TP. Then we need to clean up on them....a split with Dayton and a home win against VCU is an absolute must.

Time for another installment of the #RoadKill Rivalry. Last year after the game at the Ryan Center, Scoochie Smith tweeted #roadkill with devil horns. After we returned the favor at their place a few of our players tweeted out roadkill in response.

Not far off from what kenpom.com thinks. They say 71-67 Dayton and gives us a 36% chance of winning.

Winning this one or Davidson on the road would go along way towards helping us get into the tournament. Ideally with how well we've fared against Dayton, even in their place, we'll be able to pull off the upset and solidify our resume.

It will be interesting to see how Berry will be used in this one. He became a folk hero in these parts after his 7-7, 15 points, 3 rebounds performance in 13 minutes. Does he get the same or more time because he's a good matchup or does he get less time because we have more depth this year and/or the matchup is different this year against them?

If I remember correctly he was a good matchup last year because pollard was out and they had no size. This year may be a bit different.

Reading the Dayton board this morning it looks like Cooke won't play against us.

That may not be such a good thing though. Against Bona they shared the ball much better than usual due to him being out......

Of course they shot lights out from 3 which helped.....just like us......

Pollard's not normally a 3 point shooter, is he? He went 3 for 3 last night.

EC and Pollard both out could be a wash. Very winnable game. Scoochie was a PROBLEM.

The game at Dayton was Pollard's first game back after missing the four before that, including the one at the Ryan Center. He played 24 minutes, went 2-10 for 8 points and had 4 rebounds.

key to the game is Stanford on Scoochie. This is why we got him, to be a shut down defender. Time to unleash it

If Dayton doesn't have Cooke and they have to play like the did against Bona - I feel really good about our ability to defend the 3 vs theirs.

Depending on if we have CT back the team might rally around him and we may be able to play high emotion basketball. This team comes together under Danny like no one else. No Cooke and we have to feel really good about Friday.

It was a strange stat line for Pollard last night.
He led the team with 21 points playing only 16 minutes because he picked up 4 fouls.

6-8 FG, 3-3 on threes, 6-7 FT
1 Block

Zero Rebounds, Assists, Steals and Turnovers. He did have 1 blocked shot

So did he just camp out beyond the 3 point line?

Scoochie is the key to their entire team, with or without Cooke. He is saavy and does a little bit of everything, mostly he prevents them from going into long droughts or getting blitzed bc he will force the action and settle them down. To me he is the key, disrupt him and they will struggle to run offense. Even with Pollard, Hassan and/or Cyril should be able to control the paint. We have defended the 3 point line very well under DH and I expect that to continue. Can't let it come down to a 1 possession game within final minute, them being at home and being more battle tested will tilt the scale in their favor under that scenario.

Dayton welcomes us into the UD Arena with an overall record of 11-3 and 2-0 in conference play. They have some decent wins against New Mexico, East Tennessee St, and Vanderbilt. Probably their best win however came last night against St. Bonaventure. We all know the RC in Olean is a tough place to play and they won it fairly comfortably, 90-74, without their best player Charles Cooke. They’ve yet to earn a top 50 win so they will be motivated against us to start building their NCAA tournament resume.

Dayton plays an elite level defense, as in top 20 elite level defense (per kenpom). It will be interesting to see if we can keep up our level of play on offense against one of the top defenses in the country and THE top defense in the A10.

It appears that Cooke will not play on Friday so here are your likely starters:
#25 Kendall POLLARD 6’6 Senior F
#11 Scoochie SMITH 6’2 Senior G
#3 Kyle DAVIS 6’0 Senior G
#33 Ryan MIKESELL 6’7 Sophomore F
#1 Darrell DAVIS 6’5 Junior G

Dayton Stats:
dayton_stats.png
Pollard is averaging 20.5 pts in Dayton’s first two conference games. Hass/Cyril will have their hands full against him. We all know what Scoochie Smith means to this Dayton team. Jarvis will have a tough assignment keeping Scoochie from attacking the basket. As Da_Process suggested we likely will see significant minutes from Stan on Scoochie. Kyle Davis has come on strong recently, averaging 14pts in the last three games. I assume JT will cover him. EC will likely match-up with Darrell Davis and KI with Mikesell.

This is a big opportunity to further strengthen our tournament resume. It’s very likely Dayton will be a tournament team so beating them on the road would be a significant accomplishment. We should come in loose and confident. They need this victory more than we do. Win and we should be able to go on a lengthy winning streak. A loss would not be considered a “bad loss” by any means but preferably we make it two wins in a row at UD Arena!

I want us to make the plays necessary to win a close game against a good team...at home or on the road....this is a huge opportunity to do so....

This is what we need to do to complete the puzzle...of being a NCAAT worthy team......playing better and blowing out stiffs is great, but this is what separates the contenders from the pretenders.....and we need to prove we belong in the contender category......

You all want a more optimistic Rambone? Do this, and you'll get one.......

Lots to gain. Really destroyed the first 2 A10 teams. Ordinary years even the down teams play the good teams close.

Smoke? A corner turned? Hopefully URI has a good showing.

Gotta pull this W out. This will take so much stress off our shoulders of getting that key road win.... Dayton thinks they are the best team in the A10, time to show them the conference is ours. Plus Friday is my birthday, so they better fucking win!

I think it's obvious we have made some strides lately. A month ago we do not blow those teams out like we just did.
We were really pushing the ball and making the extra pass. Stuff we weren't doing at all. Much better sense of urgency on offense. The defense was pretty darn good too.
Our talent level was also blatantly better than SLU and Joes, so it was nice to see us show it.
I really think our guys will be ready to give the Flyers hell.
I think we have a higher ceiling than they do, but they're a well established tournament type team.
But if theirs any well established tournament level team we can always say we have a chance of beating, it's Dayton. Since we have more or less OWNED them for much of this century. So I always feel like we have a good chance to beat them regardless of the team we have.
This will probably be a close one. It's time to show some toughness and get one of these tough road games!
We win this and we will be in a really nice spot.
We'd have a good chance to start 9-0 in conference play.

My wife's b'day, too. And mine is exactly two weeks later -the day the US is gifted with a new, well...you know...don't want to get off topic...
Thank goodness we do dinner on the 'middle weekend.' A win here would be an awesome present...for her, of course.

One cool thing about this game is we could have a solid national tv audience. It looks like we're the only game Friday night from multiple bid leagues and there are not many other good sporting events to watch Friday night. A win Friday would not only be great for our chances at an at large bid but will also help our national presence.

Eh, that strikes me as pure Yankee stuff. They had Bucky Dent throw out the ceremonial first pitch before game 7 of the 2004 ALCS, you know, getting the boogieman in the building. How did that work out? Our team is good enough to win without tricks. Same with Dayton, so it should be a great game.

I'm all for former players coming back to the Ryan Center whenever they can to be recognized by the fans, but not if it's just to be part of some silly gimmick.

I would not doubt that 10 points Dan claims................
13,455 capacity sold out
Screaming fans....not laid back like you might see in the Ryan at times or certainly in the Dunk
Friday night
ESPN2 broadcast to rev up the crowd
Beer sold in big quantities

I have been to 2 URI games in Dayton Arena including the game shown above when I sat right behind our bench.
I was amazed at how long the Beer Lines were. Everyone walking away with a beer in each fist

The place is definitely not your standard 3 point home court advantage which makes any URI Victory there even more amazing. I did not make last year's game there.

It may not be 10 points but it has to be more than 3.
